WHAT- Bro I was waiting thinking "Don't cry, the story will end happily because movies always have happy endings, they always do" AND THEN CAME THE GUT PUNCH-
This movie was so beautiful and I loved hearing about it so much, good job making it, but I'm going to go sob now😭

..I just watched this movie a month or so ago, and it virtually made no sense...
..Like, how did she get legal custody? How did the kid not die when his heart was turned to ice, or pulled out? She put a BABY in a vice-grip clamp and CUT HIM OPEN without ANY anesthetics or antiseptics?! How does she know these three things could hurt him, has she done it before? Why is she not in jail for mutilating people? Is there no doctor in town? "Victim of bullying by his friends" Who? How is a clock attached to his bloodflow? Why was his being bullied less of a crime than self defense even by accident and why didn't he tell the teachers, his mother, or just bail on school? Why was he told to escape rather than present his case to the police? Why was the new mom jailed for his disappearance? Why was there no court system involved in deciding guilt or innocence? Why did mom not just go with him? Why does he turn into a full robot-dancer when the clock is touched? Why exactly is the girl scary at all enough to be in the "freak show"? All she does is sing. What's with the thorns, they serve 0 purpose and no one ever mentions them. The scariest thing about him is that he's got a CLOCK FOR A HEART but they dress him up in a mad cool costume and do nothing with the clock. ...Why does she think its okay to mess with his literal heartbeat? So this kid's eye gets poked out at school and NO ONE knows what happened?? How long can someone live in this movie without a heartbeat? Is it necessary or not? (..Why is there so much gender-swapping in this retelling?) This story tells you to just give up even after the truth has been discovered, that Sooside is the answer????? Despite the fact that LITERAL GEARS ARE MISSING, somehow the Key is all they need to fix it, and the key was OFFERED to him. The intent of LOVE was RESTORED and he just "Nah I'd rather die." If all it takes is winding up the clock, then he's not DEAD, HE'S IN STASIS, AND SHE CAN GO FIND THE KEY AND TURN HIM BACK ON! The movie already showed us that a heartbeat is inconsequential. Seems like he would'v been better off without the heart OR clock since removing the heart didn't kill him.
This is a story about running away from problems.
He runs from responsibility, he runs from his mother, he runs from police, he runs from flower-chick, he runs from his job and friend, then he runs from love and his life. There is no resolution.

You are thinking of the movie in too literal of a sense. You might as well ask, how do fairies fly? How do dragons breathe fire? The point of the story is not for it to be possible in the real world, it is to create a feeling, convey a message, through the use of imagination. If all art, stories, movies etc were based only in reality of "possible" things, there would be far less fun, artistic expression and variety.
As for this story in particular, in my opinion the main idea is about the choice to experience love even knowing what it may cost you, because it is worth it. Like George says in the movie "if you avoid everything you fear in life, you'll sooner die of boredom" or something along those lines. Life isn't lived to its fullest when we avoid reaching for what we want most, out of fear. Maybe you'll "never get hurt" but, you'll never have the joy of getting any of what you wanted either. Living a bland life of safety was not what Jack wanted, he wanted his dreams, his love. More than anything else. Its a meaningful message if you ask me!
As a side note, I believe Jack throws away the key at the end, so that Acacia will kiss him, without her fearing she is the one to cause his death. That's why he says "now there will be no one to blame but myself." He doesnt want to live life without ever experiencing love, he'd rather have it even if for a moment, than never at all. In the real world maybe death in exchange for a kiss seems like a bit much- but again thinking of it in a less literal sense, its about being willing to trade the potential pain and loss you may experience down the line, in exchange for getting to experience love.
