I use one to drag my grass pastures to break down horse manure piles, but I never drag with the teeth down. If I did, I wouldn’t have grass for long. If you just want to break up manure piles in a grass paddock, it’s best to keep the teeth up.

It seems to work real great at getting the hard dirt chunks out of the garden. I remember using a harrow behind our horse in the gardens. I didn't like working that hard, and didn't work the horse that hard either so my grandfather had to watch me or myself and the horse would be under the nearest shade tree, with the horse drinking water.
i have used a length of woven wire or cyclone fence with bars bolted at both ends. hooke up to a honda 125 atc it did a great job. I did add weight by throwind some old truck tires on it.
What would you guys recommend for removing weeds in Arizona clay kind of material? I have a gannon and a rake, and neither of them seem to grab the weeds and yank em out like a good ol loop hoe... Unfortunately doing a few acres with that 6in at a time is not gonna happen. Would a chain harrow like this dig em up? Seems more like it would float on top of hard sandy soil... What about a land plane? Or is there something similar with a blade design more like a loop hoe?
After watching this video I went and bought a small 4'X4' from my local TSC. I had some stumps recently removed and needed to knock down some dirt and gather up some roots. I pulled it with my little John Deere L110 mower. AMAZING! It knocked down all the high spots and I was able to gather up all the left over roots and twigs that were cluttering up my lawn. In the past I have used a power-rake to overseed my lawn. I had to rent it from the local equipment shop and it never did a very good job. I used this chain harrow on my lawn and it pulled up all the dead grass and weeds, and made a nice plot for my lawn seed. Now I want a bigger tractor and a bigger harrow. I love it. Many years ago I was carrying a chain harrow with a muck loader from one field to another. The muck fork on the loader tripped and the harrow fell to earth and I ran over it with the tractor front wheels. Not recommended! I never did that again , I used to chain the harrow to the loader frame instead. We live and learn.

That's why I'm here I d bought a property with a really uneven gravel driveway with that has potholes. How do you use this for that? I imagine with the prongs down? Do I need to buy a tractor or ATV for pulling something like this through gravel or can I just do it with my SUV?
@@aaronredus2950 I pull my chain harrow with a compact tractor or riding mower prongs down first to loosen the gravel then flip it over prongs up and smooth the loosened gravel, I don't see any reason why you couldn't pull the harrow with a suv and chain or strong rope.
It depends on soil condition. It probably would help if the soil is not hard packed. For more difficult conditions, a disk harrow, box blade, or land plane would probably level it better.
I picked one up at an auction for $150 a couple summers ago. Probably overpaid but one other guy wanted it too for his driveway maintenance too and bid it up.
Good for removing moss and dead grass. travel at 4mph is best. I sometimes put weights on mine before I sow in clover to an existing lea . Good video this.

I have seen those used in arenas to work the ground, but is hoping that once my ground is plowed up with the plow and the tiller is used to go over it, the ground will be good enough for planting. I wish that I had the cultivator to cut down on some of my work, but have to wait to get one. I have a John Deere 790 utility tractor and the tiller, middle buster, and waiting on my plow now. I was wondering how much it would cost to ship a cultivator to Arkansas as my money is tight and I am on a budget.

+2 acres. It will be bare dirt. right now its just untouched pasture land in kansas. lots of overgowth. i plan on clearing it out plowing it the runnin a disk through it and i found a fescue grass i would like to cover it with. can i just spread the seed and leave it or do i need to cover them

I'm trying to learn how to use a chain harrow, and whilst this video shows what it can do, and has some useful tips it misses out the really important bits like "how do you turn it over"," How do you hook it on to the tractor", "how do you turn round at the end of the run." It would be a better video if you didn't cut out the "messy" bits please.

Back when it was invented a harrow was used to score the dirt clods after plowing before the disc. Disc wouldn't cut into fresh plowed dirt when it hadn't been turned before. Don't see harrows used that way much anymore.

@EverythingAttachment Thank you for your reply. It looks to me that you have Sawgrass / Palmetto palms on your property. These type seem to be the most "durable". Today, for instance, went down to 38 degrees. That's right! Thirty-eight degrees in Fort Lauderdale...imagine that! I had to wrap my Maypan coconut palms with a blanket around the heart of the tree. That helped a little bit. Your palms seem to be a lot tougher than the most. Thanks again...Happy Holidays!!!
I am making a 30 by 100 sweet corn garden so it's grass now I'm in ontario. If I plough it over can I cultivate and plant or will it still not be broken down enough without disking is just a hobby so I don't wanna buy to many implements if I don't have to I just have 2 furrow plough cultivator and 4 row planter Thanks
Unbroken ground will not be loose enough for planting if you only use a plow. You will need to break up the dirt with either a disc harrow or tiller to be able to grow your corn. Thanks for watching!

I have one of these, most of the time it is pulled behind my bush hog to smooth the pasture for the next mowing. also you don't have to use this every time. BTW, lets not forget a tire drag. That's what I use the most

The chain harrow is mainly intended for smoothing and conditioning the soil surface. A very useful tool to hang behind a tandem disc harrow to give it that final leveling ( i.e. tandem discs tend to leave a heap in the middle and a furrow either side ) I used to do that a lot.
It depends on how aggressive you need it to be for your particular soil and "patty" collection. For best results, you'd probably want to use it with the tines down and in the passive direction. If this causes too much soil disturbance, you can flip it over so the tines are totally disengaged. Thanks for watching. I hope this helps!

I don't know why but I find it incredibly soothing to watch it tear up the dirt. It's literally putting me to sleep...

I've seen one of these being used upside down to smooth a bullfight arena. And you can use it as a mattress if you are a fakir.

Would this help get rid of high and low spots in an empty plot to help get rid of puddles

They do make a Harrow mounted on a 3 point hitch. I saw one on the lot at Atwoods farm supply in Rodgers Arkansas 2 years ago...

How do you get the kinks out of a chain harrow? My harrow is 4ft x 4ft but too heavy for me to lift it by myself. Any thoughts?

Add a 3point boom lift to the back hook it loosely and now its just a little more easier for those tight spots or for transporting it.

A cultivator is for pulling weeds out, not really designed to break up dirt.
