Ive noticed from the many vids of Siu Lim Tao or Siu Nim Tao on youtube.. that there are two main camps from Yip Man's students-- some do the lifting cross hand formation in the opening sequence and some do the rolling cross hand. If the lower cross hand formation is jammed down then the rolling transition frees the hands.. if you simply lift it, this fails to free the hands. Also the other main differences in the first set is how the fook sao is formed. I've also noticed so many discrepancies in the 3 sets that Yip Man taught, to his first round of Hong Kong senior students and then when you add all the differences that Yip Chun and Yip Ching teach.. that in another 50 years all the sets will probably all diverge into something radically different. I don't think that all the Yip Man lineages would agree to a standardized way of teaching the sets, so i fear that many techniques will degrade or be totally lost...and that is a sad thing to witness. So I guess as a practitioner of Wing Chun..it is good to have an open mind and experiment with the minor differences among the other lineages to see which methods fit the Wing Chun principles best and which methods work, versus which are incomplete or broken and don't work. Thanks for your video Sifu Brian Tuft!

Beautiful. One important aspect from my Sifus is that this is an opening, to gauge distance. Butterfly hand (no real name for this), double tan sao, double gum sao, endless. I think its challenging to use it in chi sao. Gum sao to gan sao is quite useful.

To block up with double tansao crossed hands could .be dangerous, you could .be trapped

Great explanation of the form. I will be looking for your videos to explain the rest. I was taught this form only as a form of excercise but no application. The way I was shown the left hand is on top for the lower block but then the arms are brought up with just a twist of the wrist so that the right ends up in front. Is this how it is done in some forms or is it totally wrong?

WEll everybody tends to do it differently, I have been practicing wing chun for over 35 years but by know means do I think i am the authority on the art. I learned it like I showed here in the video.

AZ Wing Chun Gung Fu Association What a blessing some have to learn the full forms from you. Where I am we pick up what we can from those who pass through and try to refine it from the net. From Wing Chun I know some Sil Lim Tau and oddly a very simple Bart Jarm Dao, various opening forms of Tiger which seem to be Hung-gar, some taichi Jian and Dao, and karate. I am hoping to join a karate class soon but prefer the grounded styles of Southern China.
