String bed was a big surprise, I got taught that it was top third of the string bed for maximum power, but this was in the 90-00s and maybe racket technology has evolved (my excuse for not listening properly?). Also surprised on how loose the grip, my grip is generally loose but didn't realise its basically fall of your hand loose! Must have great timing for that!
I'm so glad I play football. Just kidding, but I sure wish I have the technique call auto smash.. it doesn't have to be powerful but its automatically smash

So now I know how I hurt my shoulder. I thought my racket might have been strung too tightly, but smashing without enough torso rotation makes more sense. Thank you....although a year too late :) lol.... better late than never. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.
Just want to add another personal tip that many players don't know about is to have confidence in your smashes. Many times especially newer players (even myself sometimes) will quickly notice that as the shuttle is up and they try to smash, they feel discouraged as if they can't hit it right. How to gain confidence is of course, to keep practicing. There is no easy way to become better at something if you don't sharpen yourself often. Like everything, it's not always about the physical side of things, but also mentally.
Could not agree more that there is a HUGE amount of information to digest haha but I find it so helpful and every time I re-watch this video, I always explore some new things to improve my smash...THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR EFFORT

Thank you for the knowledge, most people have shoulder problems and you explained why. I had a poor smash but have been playing for 50 years. I recently tripled my smash by lifting weight on the wrist only. I am up to 7.5 kilograms doing 70 - 3 times a day. I will increase the weight to 9 or 10 kilos to finish off. I use the whole body for the smash and I use the fingers, trained with a coach during covid, but the writs are 70% of the work, 10% fingers, the rest from the body.
I have studied this video carefully and I am now confidently smashing from zero to hero. In fact, my opponents once have even walked away from my incoming smash. So strange it was that I even thought I made a fault. 😂 Thanks a lot for this scientific video. Keep it up!
Hey guys. This was an information filled video. I like the idea of using the stick to help reinforce the upper body position. I feel though, I need a bit more clarity on the forearm pronation along with internal shoulder rotation because these are typically identified as the main source of power. That is, in concert with core rotation. But that being said, great job as usual.
For elite players like you guys, trying to imitate an incorrect posture/movement for the sake of this video is a real pain lol. Great video as always with thorough explanation and nice video editing. Expecting view count to be skyrocketed as everyone loves a good smash :)

Thanks for the informative video! I have been researching the proper smash technique. It’s indeed the most complex thing to explain even my friends who has powerful smash couldn’t explain. I went through all smash tutorial videos from various countries for more than a year already. It’s interesting to learn some other sports share similar traits how to generates speed from posture to equipment. Looking forward for your jump smash video!
To be honest, I recently injured my arm and chest muscles while doing some non-badminton training on Monday and wasn't able to do a lot of things (including play/train badminton) without it hurting. What I was able to do was spend my downtime watching Badminton Insight videos. I'm making my way through the Intermediate To Advanced Tutorials + Tips Playlist. I've started liking the videos to remind myself whether I've watched them or not.
I would consider myself a nerd hungry for technique and these guys are serving. An amazing video, I believe it is your commitment to communicate a plethora of relevant information regarding the subject to an audience. Man is there a demand for that. I played from 1970 - 1995. In that time there was less knowledge as now, and there was no internet. My rackets were Carlton 3.7 and 3.7X. Good for a museum now. My smash was very powerfull according to the best players, although I didn't know anything about rotating the body. Since a few years I practice Krav Maga, Kung Fu and Kick Boxing. That's all about rotating and use the power of your body weight. So I'm a bit surprised to see the same with badminton. Tomorrow I first gonna buy a good pair of shoes in a specialized shop. Thanks for this great video. It motivates me a lot.
thank you for another excellent video. as jen says, the swing is not about arm strength but rather about developing racket head velocity, and as greg demonstrates it's much like throwing a ball. the point is made that you strike the shuttle in front of you. it's a little outside the scope of this video, but striking the shuttle in front of you often means moving back quickly and far enough to get your body behind the shuttle, so you have to be willing to do the footwork to get there. this, and most everything in this video, also applies to the clear and the drop, although the shuttle would be a little higher and farther back for the clear, but still in front of you. i like the video clip of p jordan's loose grip when his chest is open and cocked it is surprising, even a little counterintuitive, about the optimal point of contact being a little to the inside of center on the strings. i'm guessing this is because pronation impacts the shuttle more on the inside than the center of the racket. fascinating how biometrics can tell us things we might be doing the right way without being conscious of it one last comment i'd have is about the overall energy of the smash. i see many technical errors, broken points along the kinetic chain required to execute an effective smash, but most have one thing in common: impatience to hit the shuttle in a forward and downward direction because that's where you want the shuttle to go. this impatience translates into chopping at the shuttle in a short-circuited swing rather than directing the energy upwards from the floor until it reaches a zenith so that velocity of the racket head develops over time in a longer swing path
@@Upgradezz you 'have to' if you want to translate power to the shuttle. there are some delicate shots you make at the net that dont use power. but most shots are 'power' shots, not just smash but also clear, drop, drive, and even many midcourt shots. all of these rely on pronation (on the forehand side) or supination (on the backhand side) to translate energy from the body into kinetic energy in the shuttle. if you are not clear on this you need training in the basic strokes

Very Good observation n that many players tend to hold The Racket very tight in fear of losing it upon smashing.( The trick is to Practice Shadow smashing( ie- without the Birdy) to get comfortable with this grip styling.

So I can use a pan handle grip! Ive had a lot of people tell me this isn't correct, but I believe you guys. I have tried SO hard to to remove all the slice from my smash with no luck, maybe just due to the mechanics of my body or something. But I will definitely be putting this into practice.
Best video on the smash I’ve seen on UA-cam! I’m a shorter player and my angles are not as steep as taller players. Unfortunately not much I can do apart from jumping each time! I did have a question: I have seen a very famous Korean coach on UA-cam who also says don’t use the handshake standard forehand grip while smashing as you’re less likely to hit cleanly. You kinda touched on it there as well. But my real life coach is dead against this idea and says to grip correctly and work on improving pronation. Bit confusing that’s all!
Yeah it's an area of ambiguity! Some players have more of a 'pan handle' grip where other remain in a forehand grip and pronate more. We'd say it's whatever works for you and is probably best somewhere in between these!
I was going for a school championship not too long ago.. This was BEFORE I watched this video and I actually pulled a muscle in my back not being able to play the whole week trying to smash with too much power and not enough aim. Now I’ve watched this and I realize my mistake. Hopefully next time I try to smash, it won’t hurt..
My thumb hurts so bad when I use the forehand grip when hitting a smash, could you please do a separate video on technique on all three rear court shots (drop, clear, smash) including how to properly grip the racket as well as the actual movement in Slo-mo? I played from 1970 - 1995. In that time there was less knowledge as now, and there was no internet. My rackets were Carlton 3.7 and 3.7X. Good for a museum now. My smash was very powerfull according to the best players, although I didn't know anything about rotating the body. Since a few years I practice Krav Maga, Kung Fu and Kick Boxing. That's all about rotating and use the power of your body weight. So I'm a bit surprised to see the same with badminton. Tomorrow I first gonna buy a good pair of shoes in a specialized shop. Thanks for this great video. It motivates me a lot.

thank you for another excellent video. as jen says, the swing is not about arm strength but rather about developing racket head velocity, and as greg demonstrates it's much like throwing a ball. the point is made that you strike the shuttle in front of you. it's a little outside the scope of this video, but striking the shuttle in front of you often means moving back quickly and far enough to get your body behind the shuttle, so you have to be willing to do the footwork to get there. this, and most everything in this video, also applies to the clear and the drop, although the shuttle would be a little higher and farther back for the clear, but still in front of you. i like the video clip of p jordan's loose grip when his chest is open and cocked
it is surprising, even a little counterintuitive, about the optimal point of contact being a little to the inside of center on the strings. i'm guessing this is because pronation impacts the shuttle more on the inside than the center of the racket. fascinating how biometrics can tell us things we might be doing the right way without being conscious of it
one last comment i'd have is about the overall energy of the smash. i see many technical errors, broken points along the kinetic chain required to execute an effective smash, but most have one thing in common: impatience to hit the shuttle in a forward and downward direction because that's where you want the shuttle to go. this impatience translates into chopping at the shuttle in a short-circuited swing rather than directing the energy upwards from the floor until it reaches a zenith so that velocity of the racket head develops over time in a longer swing path

@@Upgradezz you 'have to' if you want to translate power to the shuttle. there are some delicate shots you make at the net that dont use power. but most shots are 'power' shots, not just smash but also clear, drop, drive, and even many midcourt shots. all of these rely on pronation (on the forehand side) or supination (on the backhand side) to translate energy from the body into kinetic energy in the shuttle. if you are not clear on this you need training in the basic strokes

Very Good observation n that many players tend to hold The Racket very tight in fear of losing it upon smashing.( The trick is to Practice Shadow smashing( ie- without the Birdy) to get comfortable with this grip styling.

I am just watching these for my school team (elementary i am 10 yes very young) and this helps alot! I will make the junior badminton finals most likely now!
So I can use a pan handle grip! Ive had a lot of people tell me this isn't correct, but I believe you guys. I have tried SO hard to to remove all the slice from my smash with no luck, maybe just due to the mechanics of my body or something. But I will definitely be putting this into practice.

Best video on the smash I’ve seen on UA-cam! I’m a shorter player and my angles are not as steep as taller players. Unfortunately not much I can do apart from jumping each time! I did have a question: I have seen a very famous Korean coach on UA-cam who also says don’t use the handshake standard forehand grip while smashing as you’re less likely to hit cleanly. You kinda touched on it there as well. But my real life coach is dead against this idea and says to grip correctly and work on improving pronation. Bit confusing that’s all!
Yeah it's an area of ambiguity! Some players have more of a 'pan handle' grip where other remain in a forehand grip and pronate more. We'd say it's whatever works for you and is probably best somewhere in between these!

I was going for a school championship not too long ago.. This was BEFORE I watched this video and I actually pulled a muscle in my back not being able to play the whole week trying to smash with too much power and not enough aim. Now I’ve watched this and I realize my mistake. Hopefully next time I try to smash, it won’t hurt..
My thumb hurts so bad when I use the forehand grip when hitting a smash, could you please do a separate video on technique on all three rear court shots (drop, clear, smash) including how to properly grip the racket as well as the actual movement in Slo-mo? Superb video !! I wish I'd seen your videos years ago. I am now having to re-learn many elements of my game, with an excellent coach but these videos would ahve been tremendous when i was younger to start with the right habits instead of having to then re-learn.
