    This is perfect low key entertainment for a Saturday night. Those biscuits seem like they remained well preserved and look appetizing enough. The Hershey's Tropical Bars are in okay shape actually - sometimes they turn to complete powder bloat. Your description is perfect it's like biting into a cocoa beverage powder formed into a bar.
    The camera work was great and the review was informative. The info by the way I know is very sparse so you had to dig around for that. Stuff that not many cared to do over the last 6 decades that can existed.. and that is simply documenting it. Thank you for that -yours was an unusual one because it had double the biscuits and no pemmican. Which I think helped too because no risk of those pemmicans bloating open inside.
    Oh geez you went gourmet with the chocolate biscuit. It's like biting into a sweet dirt smores. Follow it up with some Hershey's Tropical cocoa. That was actually a good idea there to utilize that chocolate dust.
    Awesome work man that was alot of fun to watch. The ending clips were a nice bonus too.

      Hey steve! Today I posted a video on a 1966 MCI in pretty nasty condition. I was wondering, at what point to you put on the gloves and the mask? The last thing I would want is for my brother or I to get sick.
      Just thought I ought to ask you because you know the most about the older side of rations, and how to deal with them. Thanks bud,
      Cheers,
      Simon C.

      Man I'm glad you actually liked it. I really enjoyed filming this one and I think it came across in the film. I just thought about it but I should have tried to melt some of the chocolate back into its original mix. I couldn't believe how well it mixed into a drink. I sweat I almost could have gotten away wroth not stirring it. I just did stir so much because I figured it wouldn't mix well. Ok now as far as not having the pemican I'm sure that was a big help. At the same time I'd really like to get a can of 1942-1945 pemican in a lifeboat ration some day and try it out. I think the pemican probably sucked when brand new though. What do you think?
      It's a good feeling documenting something that you can't even find pictures of. That was one of the most exciting elements of the review to me. Also that's one thing that 99% of people won't understand. Of course I know you do though. Thanks for watching it and commenting. I know people love to read your feedback.

      Hey Simon. In my opinion with the mci, rci, etc. The biggest concern with those old rations is when there is liquid present. Of course tetanus is always a possibility with rusty, dirty metal. But I can only assume you've had a shot recently being as young as you guys are. So all that said be very careful with any liquid, or moist food items. That's my 2 cents on the matter. I know you didn't ask me but I thought I'd offer my thoughts.

      I think I have a 1970s ration that might have a tropical bar in it. So hopefully I'll get to try a more solid tropical bar then. I sent one of those rations to stickyfingaz745 recently. Maybe we will see him try one soon.

      That's awesome. I'll say this a year ago I never thought that people would be putting me in the same group as those guys. I'm glad that people seem to mostly like what I'm doing here. I have rations that were sent in but other than those I'm going to stick to the old stuff I've gotten collected for the channel. Hopefully I have or can get what people want to see.

    • @oliwan666
      @oliwan666 6 років тому

      I am sure. It is not only the rations. The presentation is important as well...you guys have some sort of special potential for entertainment. If it "goes down the hatch" or makes "a nice hissss"...
      I, for my part, can relax perfectly while having my own meal and watch some really sympathetic guys sharing some really interesting stuff. I find those rations quite fascinating. Especially when it comes to vintage stuff or survival kits. Those thing you don't get to see very often.

    • @Oldsmokey1
      @Oldsmokey1  6 років тому

      Well I think I might be trying to tackle something really cool that I know you'll like. I have a 49lb hot climate survival kit from 1966. It's the largest purchase I've ever made for the channel. I hope to get some good info put together and unpack and try the food and water from that kit for hitting 10k subscribers. I'm going to be doing the things that were sent in while I work on that just because I've gotta get those done no matter what.

    Great video bro. I was amazed it was all still good. I had some bad luck with some 6 year old MREs earlier this year. This unknown guy was selling them on Facebook here in Thailand. He showed a picture of a 2016 box that he probably copied off of the net and told all the dealers here they were all 2016 packing date. None of the FRHs worked, all of the cheese was hard, dry, and a lisle rancid. Crackers and bread was all stale ate some of them, but the brisket and mashed spuds made me a little ill. The guy I buy from the most at Frontline Store in Bangkok got a little sick, and his buddy got really sick. That guy disappeared as soon as he sold em. They must have been stored in a shack down in the swamps down south for 6 years. For the guy to lie like that shocked all of us, it is a friendly small group of guys that mostly are airsofters and gear shop owners, and me, the foreigner that likes this stuff, and there are a few foreign customers that are campers and hikers, too.

      @Oldsmokey1  6 років тому

      +Ron Torrence
      Wow that is bs. They must have seen some insane heat. I've eaten some really questionable mre's that were stored at 100-120° Temps in California and they were still mainly edible. The key is to boil every entree and side if you have even the slightest thought it might be in bad shape.

    • @rontorrence7905
      @rontorrence7905 6 років тому

      We had no idea they were 2012 until we opened the bags, only 6 years old, who would have suspected anything to be wrong?. I thought it was odd when the dealers didn't get the boxes. I didn't mention that one of the bags of Skittles was a solid mass of gell. there were no signs of anything not right, no smells, pinholes, tears, dents, or anything.I remember reading briefly a few years ago that there were a couple of years some MREs were going bad quickly and were pulled, mare these were some of those .

    • @Oldsmokey1
      @Oldsmokey1  6 років тому

      +Ron Torrence
      You know what that is a possibility. I've heard a few people tell me that they had bad mre's from 2011-2013 production years but I've never had that issue. Although almost always before I buy something I ask about its history of storage, etc. I usually know if they ate full of bs or not but not always.

      I just got tired of people saying I don't eat the food. Plus the handful of people that think I'm scared to be on camera. With the space that I have to film it dictates how I can film myself. My buddy was actually helping me and we tried a bunch of different stuff that day it's the best it's ever turned out but lots of work to get to where it's at now. My goal is for each video to be better than the last from a WW2 ration to just a new MRE I want to do my best with each video.

      It occured to me as well, but I wasn't aware that phones had stereo mics. An easy way would be to just cut one of the two channels from the stereo audio, and use a dual mono coding for the vid. Also, it's possible that it only bothers me, so you might as well just leave it as is, it's still watchable, it just kinda irks me.

    • @sIDsleeper
      @sIDsleeper 6 років тому

      It's also possible that you just modified the two channels' levels differently.

      Oh I should also mention that when I was editing this one I had to mess with the volume level.....Alot. It cost me alot of extra work. I've got to figure out how to fix it or get something different to film with.

      If I hadn't tried making the hot coco I would have got like 50 comments asking me why I didn't. The thing is you just don't always think of everything in the moment. Thankfully this time I was able to just film that part later on.

    Recently discovered your channel. This was a fascinating ration. I do wonder why ration reviewers save empty product containers and put them on display. Thanks for showing us this ration.

      The empty containers ate kinda like a trophy I guess idk. I jusat line to display then. Let alone even empty the container for this ration is probably worth $30-$40.

    Awesome review Smokey. Wow this was in good condition. Its cool to see something packed when my sister and brother were just babies. Like you said you do this to show what was being eaten back in those days in different situations and i really enjoy them:)

      You can tell when I'm really excited about a ration I think. I really like all rations new and old but my heart is in the old rations. It's crazy how expensive they have gotten over the last year. I think so many people have started making videos or collecting it's supplies in demand now. The dogs might be cute but they are a pain in my rear most of the time. I think other than sent in things I'm going to focus on doing some old rations in the near future. I liked the way I felt when I finally finished this film.

      I think i really like the old ones also. I like when you Steve Gundog and others do them. Its like little time capsules. Seeing food that is half a century old and so on. And actually finding something edible is also cool. Yea i guess its just hard to find the older stuff now. Hopefully more people will hop on the patreon page and support. Aww im sure they are but they are so adorable. Hope you have a great day:)

      I Almost couldn't believe how good everything still was. Hopefully I'll find some more cool things like this in the future. They've just been selling so high I have no chance at getting any right now. The beard takes time to keep it clean and groomed but I've had it since I got hurt and just haven't shaved it yet. I'm thinking about shaving it almost off once I can walk again but idk. Thanks for watching the video and commenting.... Later.

      Oldsmokey That is crazy, I usually see ones where things have been busted open to where everything is bad, I'm glad I got to see one in great condition and you got to try one! I hope you find another one too that'd be really cool to see even if they're bad they are still amazing to experience. And it definitely looks well kept. May I ask what happened? Did you break a leg or your back? I understand if you don't wanna tell me, some injuries are personal. As I said in my other comments to you, I'm in the medical field and training to be a trauma surgeon so I completely understand how touchy injury subjects can be. Id love to know though if you feel comfortable saying! No problem, you're in my top 4 favorite MRE reviewers so thank you, for the amazing videos!

      Noted haha. I think I might have some really good examples of some really old rations in my collection. I can't wait to get to them. I'm going to review the things sent in but the things of my own I review are going to be the best oldest things I have and fo from there.

      Haha I've noticed that some people like to see Stella and Sebastian so I might try to include them in some times. I've also had people telling me that I don't eat the food,I'm afraid of being on camera, etc so I figured since this food was good and old I'd eat some on camera just to put that theory to rest. Hope ya liked the video and thanks for watching and commenting.... Later.

      We use the same editing program and we're pretty close friends so I'm sure he picks up on things I do and I pick up on things he does in conversation. But I think maybe I should take it as a complement if my video was even close to the quality of video he puts out.
