Similar video: ua-cam.com/video/zoKVA4C-9ok/v-deo.html UPDATE: Hey All! I've gotten a couple of comments from people that clearly care about MiA and I'm here to say that's great. I also love the series. The point of the video is not to bash the series or it's storytelling but to point out general concerns that I and other fans have about certain depictions of young characters within it. These things are controversial because they involve certain depictions of children in a way that does not add to the progression of the story and seems to only be an outlet for the creator's specific desires. I hope to help people realize that it's okay to question things that might seem concerning or make you uncomfortable in our favorite series because we should be critical about the things we watch. Thanks for watching the video and leaving your thoughts!
Na 100% this is a perverted creep show by a perv creator, it sucks because the atmosphere and premise is legendary it really is a truely great format for a good storyteller.
@SH19922x I'm just not overly concerned about the abuse of imaginary children. The story is too cool to get squeamish about animated characters. It's incredibly entitled and imposing of Western taboos where they are completely irrelevant and not going to affect real children in the real word AT ALL.
I mean, the author literally used to create actual child p*rn*graphy doujin before Abyss, so…nothing deep to analyze or argue here. It’s right there on the surface.
I can't believe I tried to force myself at some point to don't mind those weird fanservice scenes just because they were really common in anime, I thought I was the problem 💀
@@iamwooth1729That's why I left the animanga community for good. If you speak up about not liking having oversexualised scenes shoved up your face for hours you have sweaty weebs like Rev(proud lolicon) calling you a tourist. "It's all fictional" yeah like that doesn't make it any less worse
@@iamwooth1729they even get mad when someone offers to censor the manga for other people. Like that doesn’t even affect them yet they still get so enraged.
Fr, I suffered through it for a bit but by S2, it was so goddamn egregious, I couldn't do it. It sucks cuz it's a gorgeous show and specifically Bondrewd is one of the most hype villain ever to me. But the pros simply cannot undo the pedophilic cons.
As a person who loves made in abyss and uses it as a form a inspiration in my works thank you for making this I'm so tired of feeling alone on how I feel about the gross stuff in the show and manga
I literally can't blame anyone for feeling inspired by the writing and worldbuilding of MiA because it's incredible, I just don't think it's right to ignore the obvious and disturbing aspects of it like they don't exist. I just want people to be comfortable acknowledging both aspects. Thanks for leaving your thoughts Samantha!
yeah, while I actually like him adding in answers to daily life issues like the toilet, he didn’t need to SHOW it being used. This is honestly one of the few good examples of tell dont show
What bothers me most is that most of the sexualized scenes are inconsequential to the story. Sure there’s stuff like Vuekos past shown to be horrifying. But then you get scenes of Riko pooping on a toilet that licks her clean. Why is that part of the story? Why does Akihito feel the need to share his weird fetishes in his work? Literally nothing changes if you took those scenes out. Just draw hentai on the side or just keep it to yourself. Hard to defend or recommend Made in Abyss when you constantly have to separate Art from the Artist. Constantly being taken out of the story and hoping he hasnt harmed any child in real life is frustrating.
I agree. There are so many elements that just don't need to be in the story and since they are there (even in the anime which is also concerning because they can censor more then they do) it feels very suspect.
@@TheAnimeTea yeah, while I actually like him adding in answers to daily life issues like the toilet, he didn’t need to SHOW it being used. This is honestly one of the few good examples of tell dont show

@@Google_remote Easy, like everyone that is fan of certain concepts like Berserk, Usagi Drop, Oreimo, anything from Hiroya Oku (especially Gantz) and the eroges, if we're fans is because we enjoy the concept and tolerate all the weird things
As someone who ABSOLUTELY HATES censorship, I do wish we could get a version without the weird shit. I would love to recommend this to non anime fans as I feel it would really rope people into its story. As of now, I have to recommend it to only anime enjoyers with the caviat of creepy child sexuality.
we have enough with toned down versions of Roald Dahl, Agatha Christie & Ian Fleming we aren't pansies and we can stand racist words on fictional media as well as the content of Made in Abyss
You don't hate censorship then, if somethign has an aspect in fiction that i absolutely detest i jsut stop consuming it anymore, not call for it to be deleted.

I went in blind after seeing nanachi and mittys backstory on shorts, i was warned that it was dark, and i was all for it. But i reaaaallllyy wish i wouldve known more about these kinda things. I dont know how to feel about going on, i watched s1 last night, and the movie and till s2 ep3 tonight, and while i love the story and characters so much its becoming so hard to continue. First season i passed it off as it just happening, not really being sexual, but it is so damn often that im struggling to keep watching, and its not something i want to just ignore either.
You know, made in abyss is possibly one of the greatest ironies of all time. It has near perfect characters, worldbuilding, story, etc, but at the same time it’s filled whit completely unnecessary stuff that made me question myself morally when watching the anime and not enjoying it as much as I could because I was too worries about skipping any questionable scene whenever they appeared
@@abrahamlupis9354with eroges, it’s the opposite problem. A lot of authors wanted their stories told but couldn’t get them out there without adding the sex scenes. Which is why many feel so out of place. While with MiA, I feel like the mangaka just wanted to illustrate his abhorrent fétiches and wrote the story around that.
@@hajarmdn4883 I believe that the authors want to put the content that they want, a charming story with sweet intimate moments, there's tons of adult merchandise from popular visual novels The issue would be those that get too much mainstream fame deciding to stop doing eroges or draw for eroges, when they were known for very explicit or very specific scenes, I support those that despite the fame continue in the eroge industry like Jin Happoubi, Takahiro or Kantoku
Made in Abyss is literally my favorite show ever. I care so much for this show that the gross and weird stuff is even more painful for me. What frustrates me to no end is that every single occurrence of urine, feces, and genitalia could have been removed after the first time and it'd literally make the show infinitely better for it. It being so close to an unambiguous masterpiece in my eyes is what makes me so incredibly upset that I cannot blindly recommend it to anyone without a big warning and describing it as "a Mona Lisa but da Vinci decided to draw a big-enough-to-be-distracting swastika in the corner".
Swastikas are good, the one from Blade of the Immortal is badass, but hey, there's works where the weird things didn't affect their popularity like Berserk, Gantz, Saya no Uta and Taimanin Asagi
It's so hard when something so good has such a glaring flaw! At least, to us. I think it does serve some narrative purpose and I'm sure other people appreciate it, but man. Would have preferred more cosmic horror instead of one too many mentions of diarrhea.
@@zillychu it definitely serves a purpose to characterize that reg does feel human "things" and riko is in fact just a naive kid, but then again I definitely feel like those aspects could've been communicated in other ways, at least after the first time. But since he uses them over and over its clear its also coming from the author's weird fetishes.
@@Enderdude600 I think it's also meant to emphasize that juxtaposition between cute characters and grim reality. MiA is a master of delivering an uncanny, uncomfortable atmosphere that tickles morbid curiosity, imo. Removing the author's kinks would create an entirely different feeling for the series, but... I can't say that would be a bad thing, just that it would be different. I'd probably prefer the kink-less option myself 💀 There are plenty of other ways to drive home themes of nostalgia and loss of innocence.
I really appreciate how the degree of bodily fluids and nudity shown CAN add a degree of grittiness to the story. Because it's a survival scenario in an incredibly dangerous setting, of course the characters are going to have to attend to their bodies and get used to things that are normally tiptoed around in civilized society in order to survive. When Riko is shirtless after vomiting on herself and immediately starts hyping up Reg's Incinerator, for example, the focus of the scene is not on Riko, so it feels more like the type of nudity that you mentioned is acceptable in Japan. Bit of a culture shock, but it makes the world feel a lot more real, and the overall tone of the scene isn't really a sexual or awkward one. But there are also clearly times that it's being thrown in for its own sake, and some scenes are just unforgivably stupid, like nanachi getting boobs from Kuongatari bites in the movie, and especially Riko's bathroom break during the entrance to the 6th layer. This show definitely has a degree of weirdness that would work more to its own advantage if it wasn't used in such a tone-deaf way 80% of the time.
I remember leaving a comment on an episode one about how weird it was so watch those parts and people where so against me on it. That's when I realised just how many people are into that stuff, it's disgusting
@@reigenxalsame. I wish there were a list of animes where there are not sexual scenes, even for "comedy". I no longer have the tolerance for that and give up the show instantly when one shows up.

Im so sorry but i keep seeing people say that the way the children's bodies in MiA are drawn as very young and childish means that its NOT supposed to be titillating, are not understanding what p3d0s actually like.
Seriously! I tried reading the manga and dropped it so fast because the way and detail and framing of a literal little girl naked WAY too often made me extremely uncomfortable. I love dark series and I don't mind gore but this one... It's almost a straight up lo/i doujin 🙄
He has a tweet saying something along the lines of "child belly so erotic!" It was translated with Google translate but I don't think that fact changes how creepy it is.
he's actually audaciously blatant about it, I think the only reason it's still a question is because nobody has asked him directly imo edit: like I think he'd just *tell you* that he was into children if you asked, he seems bizarrely unaware like that
@@IdocarebutIdontyeah, I watched the movies, and the scene with Bondrewd just rooting around in there was a massive yikes, especially with certain angles🤢
Another strong opinion I have is : okay, I can understand putting children through terrible trials to make it more impactful, but do you have to also add the sexual stuff and make us even more uncomfortable? Is it really necessary to your story to include that? And every time I come to the firm "no" conclusion.
this!! and if for some reason sexual trauma is included in the story for plot reasons, it does not need to be shown or explained in explicit detail. this applies to adult characters as well, but especially children ones. many times when scenes like this are included, they only seem to sexualize the scenario which is gross
Honestly, the part about being embarrassed by being an anime fan really hit me. I used to be a huge anime fan as a teenager. But as I got older, animes everything got too uncomfortable for me. The treatment of female characters, of underage female characters the low-key p*do bait. It's why I stopped watching.
@Abraham Lupis yes but also no. What this show has content wise, you can not do in America. Though if we want to talk about how adults treat minors vs how they claim to care about minors. That's a whole different ball game. We all know how young girls and teenage women are made to feel. But it's equally as appalling how boys are treated. And sadly, no one wants to talk about the sexualization of young boys and males below age 18.
I'm sorry to hear this... You really have to search hard to find an anime that is both interesting and not sexual. A few like that are, from the top of my head, Shadows House, Mahoutsukai no yome, Puella magi Madoka magica and Akiba maid wars. Check them out if you wanna! 💖
To be honest made in abyss over sexualized it's both male and female characters(all of them are kids). Also one part in the show even includes sexual assault for some reason.😢
Oh my god, same. I read a lot of monogatari series, and a lot of the stuff I read was really interesting. But like. Oh my god what the fuck what the fuck what the fuck
I think the makers of the anime adaptation did their best with the source material without cutting out too much of the filler. I haven't read the manga, but I know it's a lot more... *that.* I'm just glad there's a way to experience this incredibly good story in a somewhat more acceptable package. I wish they could have toned it down more, but honestly the fact that it was toned down at all (unlike some others) is something I am grateful for.
@@haleywilson520 Yeah, Made in Abyss is very notorious for a lot of nudity and strange panels. The recent chapter (65) had a moderate amount of ^. And it does not help the fact that most of the characters look like children which only fuelled the controversy and the outright hostility shown by other people against the entire series and the mangaka.

@@delta8989a year later but yeah it was seriously toned down. The second season portion of manga got so bad i genuinely had to take a break simply because it felt like i was reading a dodjinshi. I consider myself desensitized to a big extent, but at the point an adult woman drools over fantasizing about children i was like, "yep im waiting for the anime". And yeah, it was better about it - at least it didnt feel like nearly everything leads to SA.
I always saw them as being children as a depiction of how only someone who is immature and innocent would have the goal of descending the depths prematurely. Any sane and normal adult wouldn’t dare to descent down a hell hole that curses you, but a child is more likely to just do it. Other stuff though is just whack…
It also is very impactful with young kids going through this, as it makes it more traumatic, not to mention Riko has her mother missing so it is quite understandable for her to go to the abyss. To me it was just psychologically more triggering that children go through this, as I love psychological horror kind of stories. (But the fetish/sexual/weird scenes piss me off)
Okay but the “other stuff” is directly linked to the first sentiment when the creator is a predator. He can’t remove sexuality from vulnerability because he’s a fucking creep.
I had the same theory too! having teens or adults would look kind of "forced" or like idiots wanting to die, but children... is sadly possible. My problem is not with them being kids, you can have good shows with kids but this particular mangaka is obvioulsy not good in the head and that taints the product A LOT.
I was kind of in denial through season 1, trying to make excuses and give the benefit of the doubt for all the creepy shit. Cause it had this Ghibli-like sense of adventure and beautiful environment art, set in a Lovecraftian cosmic horror setting, and that is like the perfect combination of things i like. But with the movie and season two it's like more and more blatant how creepy and fetish-y everything is and it's just disappointing. Significantly detracts from my enjoyment.
Dude… idk if it’s just me, but none of it ever really bothered me because I just didn’t even begin to sexualize it in my mind. I’ve been to beaches before where there’s been young children just walking around fully naked. And I guess I just feel like it’s up to me whether I make it weird or not… and with made in abyss, I didn’t make it weird. The only thing that I can admit was weird was when riko pointed out that Reg was errect, or maybe the feces stuff. But honestly, I just said, whatever, so what if there’s some weird unnecessary scenes. I love the story, I love the characters, and I’m gonna enjoy it.
@@divinerdan8413 Probably just you. I also ran around naked as a kid and don't mind naked kids running around, because they are not sexual to me. But I know for a fact that other people get dirty with these thoughts, that's why I don't want to see that shit.
@@divinerdan8413same here i watched made in a byss season 1 a long time ago maybe when it came out and i didnt even know it was controversial until now
Glad someone finally said it. I thoroughly enjoyed this series at first and tried hard to separate the highly unnecessary sexual garbage from what is otherwise incredible world-building, great characters, and a fantastic horror environment that I very much enjoyed reading, but it kept getting worse and worse to the point where something about the "Papa's rod" bit in Dawn of the Deep Soul pissed me off enough to strongly consider calling it quits. Eventually gave up around the village arc when it became clear this was going to be a running theme the rest of the series. People can scrounge together all the excuses they want about how "it's a dark series, of course it'll include dark themes" or "censorship is bad" nonsense, somehow forgetting that 99% of the qualms are directed explicitly at the fact that literal child characters are constantly being put in sexual situations that do nothing to further the story. Christ, just within the first few pages of the manga I literally had to check behind me to make sure no one could see THAT panel over my shoulder the first time I read it. People will bend over backwards to avoid any criticism of this series, even from others who admit to enjoying it, and that only makes things more miserable. You don't need sex to be scary and you certainly don't need it from an author who has admitted he actively enjoys loli/shota and can generally be deduced to be doing it for disgusting fun, not through a solely """"artistic"""" lens. Sorry there's so many rabid lolicon freaks in your comments.
Thankfully the papas rod thing was just Prushka helping Bondrewd with dissection and asking what the genitals were. Bondrewd explained thats what makes someone a papa. He didn't do anything creepy with her. Bondrewds messed up but he's not THAT messed up.
Tsukishi is not afraid to show in public that he's into these things. On his pixiv bookmarks/retweets he sometimes retweet/bookmark some R-18 MiA fanarts. One of things I appreciate about him is he showed the shittyness of "Talk no Jutsu", our MCs tried to use one with Ozen, Bondrewd, Faputa and the result? All failed lol.
the talk no jutsu fails were kinda satisfying in a way its like this isn't Utopia this is real life 😂 Faputa even took it one step further it didn't just fail she took everyone's words and literally and physically said shove it
It really sucks because I really love Made in Abyss but the gross stuff can't be ignored, it's not even needed, it adds nothing. I love Nanachi so much but I don't want people to think I just accept the gross stuff and think it's okay. It really hurts to love this anime because the story is just SO GOOD, and yet it feels like it's waisted potential because of those scenes. I would recommend it to everyone if those parts weren't in it.
What disturbs me the most is the fact that te manga is even more explicit. Not to mention the extras, that contains a good amount of unnecessary "fun facts". The most recent one (66.5 or vol 12) includes grafic explanations regarding the "biology" of a set of new charactes, CHILD characters. And is just disgusting, like, I guss i'm glad it wasn't mention or show on the actual story, but still... it was gross. Plus, this very same characters desing and interactions just scream fetish in so many ussetling ways....
At this point it's just getting worse and worse every layer. Like the newest characters were immediately sexualized a chapter or two after being introduced.
Honestly, the scene with Reg strapped to that chair in Dawn of the Deep Soul traumatized me to the point where I had to pause the movie and stare at the wall for some time. The quality of the anime is so good, and yet I just felt disgusted watching anything further. The show is such a 9 out of 10, but if I had the chance to forget about this whole series, I would.
Most if not all of the made in abyss fans are distubed and uncomfortable with these scenes but the World Building, the art, the music and the characters are so good the writer keeps us hooked. I think its like akihito is toturing us irl and it would not surprise us (the fans) if the manga doesnt finished cause this guy is an actual molestor and gets put into jail...
ha, Akihito Tsukushi won't be dumb to grope real people, he knows that there's legal fictional media to leave the real girls I don't recall a case where a doujinshi or eroge artist that does mainstream draws did the same kind of crimes
He wouldn't be placed in jail/prison for too long, anyway. Japan has somewhat more lax laws when it comes to sex crimes. There was an author who had CP shortly after it was officially banned in Japan and he was only fined, if I recall. He eventually got help or something and got back into finishing the series.
Yeah but i felt backstabbed cuz i did not sing up for pedo content ... I get into Made in abbys to watch they in the adventure of the unknown... The fantasy, the missing mom, the reason of the kid robot existing .. not for pedo content ...makes me agnry
@@user-fe8gx3ie5v nah is pedo, i loveeeeee the cognitive dissonance of anime fan, when they praise attack on Titan they mention how the show is mature cuz is bringing the power corruption and bla bla bla of a hero, the content is serious and thereford anime is not for kids, cuz is gorwy and there is blood and there is traiton, almost same narrative with bersek that has traition and is full of plot twist BUT WHEN CLEARY THE ANIME HAS PEDO CONTENT is never intended, thats not why is there, is just kid looking but actually adults, and when kids are involved "no no is about critizizing " the deed! Yeah sure like thats Netflix show who complaint about minors explotation while showing minor explotation HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA
The fetish stuff makes it hard to recommend, yeah. The horror and gore is kind of the whole point, though, and I feel like the video misses it by a mile. Riko was called into the Abyss and it was an obsession - she escaped as soon as she could. It's mentioned constantly how the curse affects kids more than adults, and why she's on such a suicide mission. She knows she's not making it back, and she'll never see her friends or a sunrise ever again. The Curse is way more than altitude sickness, too: It can easily kill you, and once you get deep enough, even ascending 20 meters can warp and melt your body and mind.
Anyone who's either worked a daycare job or had young kids in their family shares the sentiment. The fact that people actually get their rocks off to that shit will never not be repulsive.
Let's not forget the UNNECESSARY attempted rape scene on Riko when she was in the golden city. Curious as to why you don't remember that happening? Because they didn't animate that in the show, but go back in the Manga and its sure as shit there.
Is that the part where she gets lost by herself, then asks for help and gets basically lead and trapped into a back alley with some creepy ass monster dudes, but Maa saves her I think? Yeah that was in the show. I can't imagine it being more weird in the manga, unless it actually went there before she was rescued.
Thanks for voicing my feelings on this stuff - I was on the phone yesterday recommending MiA to a friend and felt incredibly awkward in doing so. I hate that I felt required to tell him about the weird seemingly fetish content in a show that follows primarily two ~12 year olds. I think this type of content tarnishes an otherwise perfect anime, and it's immensely frustrating to me that in such a fantastic world that has so much depth this frankly disgusting stuff is shown. If it benefited the plot, that's one thing; but all 'those' scenes in the show never benefit the plot.
I literally left by the second time. The first time, whatever, just another unfunny anime joke. But the next time, I just felt physically sick and realized I wasn't even like, a third or half way in yet.
@@inillusion3335 artistic freedom is up for critique, mr. proud creep. U people find the weirdest excuses to justify the signs of pedophilia. Nothing to be proud of.
to be honest, I think this story would've been better if the characters were instead mid to older teenagers and there were a lot less weird stuff. Not only would it be less creepy, but then the whole dynamic of young people going into an extremely dangerous place would still fit.
Like you said, I feel like separating personal fetishes from your work is a problem with mangaka in general. If I can tell what your fetish is based on your non-sexual work, we have a problem. I don't need to know that much about you AND it takes me out of your story. It's why blatant fanservice like pantyshots when in non-ecchi Anime is so jarring and uncomfortable.
MHA had bits like that that had me raising a confused brow, like the weird... Tickling machine Nighteye uses on the blue girl for some reason. Very very VERY jarring moment
Dawn of The Deep Soul is great imo simply because Bondrewd is such a fantastic villain. There are so many villains in comics and manga who pretend to be friendly like Freeza and The Joker, but Bondrewd seems genuine. He hurts children and does incredibly evil, unforgivable things, but I genuinely think his friendliness is not an act. He values the lives of the children he experiments on, but not as much as he values his research. If he could conduct his experiments effectively without hurting anyone at all, I believe he would. Even after he's defeated by Rico and company, he's happy for them and holds no grudge. He's truly fascinating and terrifying
Yeah, I really wanted to like MiA, but I've never been into horror that relies heavily on disgust, especially not with kids as protags. I was expecting more psychological/eldritch horror going in, and there are some elements of that, and I loved those segments. But the final episode of season 1 was the straw that broke the camel's back for me. I have never felt nauseated watching a show or a movie before, but that did it. I'm glad you went into the varying types of grossness involved with the show, because a lot of people I'm acquainted with kind of handwave it with stuff like "anime/Japanese culture is just like that" or "if you aren't aging every anime character up 5 years in your head then you can't enjoy any anime" (a phrase that makes me want to commit violence). It's possible, maybe even vital, to be critical of shows you enjoy. All the handwaving I've seen in regards to this show honestly just creeps me right out. Thank you for making this video.
I totally understand not being able to stick with this series. The way you feel about the end of season one is how I feel about the movie, I've never watched an anime that made me feel physically sick to my stomach before. Also people telling you to "age characters 5 years up" is concerning as hell. These creators obviously made their characters certain ages for a reason, ignoring that is problematic. The anime fandom has always had a problem with sweeping concerning aspects like this under the rug and I'm not down for that. I just want for people, especially adults, to be openly critical of what they watch. But if everyone is going to ignore it anyway I want to at least be the one to address it. Thanks for watching and leaving your thoughts!
I empathize with your disgust, but being able to enjoy something despite flaws only shows how different people ingest media differently. It's more problematic to say it's "concerning" that someone can handwave the controversial content. It's not indicative of any moral standing, it simply means you process the media differently. Me not being able to handle gore doesn't make doctors "concerning" for being able to stomach it. Just ingest media critically, with appropriate awareness. That's all we have to do. Fiction is fantasy and we've all got different levels of steel stomachs to tolerate discomfort.
i agree i as an example also like the story of a webcomic called lore olympus but have to mentally age the characters in it to enjoy it fully im so conflicted its not right.. its traumaticing and i would again keep children away from it at all costs... it doesnt deal with the obvious fact that the main character is an naive child who doesnt know any better as a bad thing, its romanticising it and i just cant agree with that, otherwise i love the character building and lore of lore of olympus but cant recomend it to anyone
I love Made in Abyss and this is a great breakdown of the series. In regards to that nudity thing, particularly when you brought up the bath scene in Totoro, it reminded me of when my mom first watched it with me. I’d seen the movie SO many times before, but mom had never watched it. When it got to that scene my mom was like, “umm??? Creepy?” Which had been the first time I’d thought of it as anything more than it’s presented in the film - a sweet scene of a (sorta) single parent taking care of his kids.
This was such a refreshing, honest, and valuable discussion about the grooming atmosphere of MiA. Thank you for spilling the tea! I’d honestly really enjoy hearing your critique of the film, but protect your peace if discussing that would be too stressful
It's not "grooming." It's a gritty series that is both beautiful and disturbing. From what I have watched (I don't read the comic), it has never even had any scenes of adults getting creepy with kids or any of the sort. Just the show making sexual jokes or being weird in other ways.
@@user-fe8gx3ie5v Really? Even based on the anime alone, Ozen leaning down to Marulk (who is a boy that she forces to dress like a girl, by the way) while going "I'll be sure to string you up naked later" isn't creepy?
The incredible, uncomfortable pain one feels that they want to recommend this cuz it’s good, but at the same time no cuz. You know. Like, MiA is one of the best in creature creation, gore and such; but dear god if it makes me want to question if it’s a good idea to keep supporting this at times. Update no one asked and probably knows by now: The newest chapters of the manga, 65, doesn’t help at all, in fact, only makes any attempt as to recommend this series 10 times worse. Akihito what is this curse?!
I feel like the anime really tones down certain depictions of the child characters in the manga, especially the female characters in the manga are sometimes drawn in a very sexualized way that really disturbs me.
ooh I've been waiting for this critique! first of all: the curls are popping 🤩 Made in Abyss is definitely ✨uniquely✨ disturbing with very strangely placed and recurring poop scenes 😰 I think theres a theme in popular media from Stranger Things to Promised Neverland of kids trying not to get killed/eaten and audiences wanting to see younger characters in gritty adultified traumatic storylines 💀But the fan-service is weird, period amen. my theory is that mangakas do this to egg on doujinshi artists (the freakin mannequin!?!? what in the rurouni kenshin is going on here!?!? smdh)
Thank you Sistah! It's so true, kids in frightening situations without adults around seems to be an entire sub-genre of media that most people really enjoy. I would agree with the doujinshi statement since Tsukushi has also been known to like certain types of doujinshi's of his characters 😶. The mannequin is definitely the most red flag thing I've ever seen in a mangaka interview.
Your guess that it's to egg on doujin artists is likely the case. It's a pretty well established practice in the anime and manga industry to add in subtext and hints in a work in order to inspire fans to make fan art. That's why so many shonen anime have bishonen as leads. It's to get the fujoshi to ship the characters. There is a certain degree of ambivalence to this practice in Japan though. Some people don't like the blatant pandering. And others don't like it because too much pandering can lead to a really lacking work.
Anime and manga tend to pander to their most extreme fans/community members (including doujinshi artists) in a way that western media often does not. I wonder if this was exacerbated by the financial crash of 2008, which destroyed much of the international market and reduced TV+movie revenue for the domestic anime for about 7 years. Manga suffered similar drops in sales. To balance it out, the industry seems to have relied heavily on merch sales, gambling, and gatcha games targeted at the most committed fans rather than seek broad appeal (and cut costs by relying more and more on fanservice rather than story and framerate). Since Made In Abyss was serialized in 2012, it probably was written to be creepier than it would otherwise have been... Or that's what I though until I saw the mannequin at 18:20... O_O
Thank you for making this. I don’t mind difficult topics. But I don’t even know how to recommend this to friends while I’m conflicted with its content.
Of course, i had to tell someone that i recommend to please don't read the manga cuz become Loli porn, SO please don't think i like that 😅, i had to clarify, just imaging if someone thing i voluntary like to SEE kids being licked by weird toilets ewwww
As much as I’ve enjoyed MiA it can be difficult to watch because of certain moments that feel like fetish fuel. One that stood out to me a lot is the belly button penetration. It always freaks me out and it always feels so unnecessary. It happened multiple times in the between seasons movie and was brought in again in season 2. All on Reg. Considering how many well-known mangaka have been arrested for possessing CP, I think they might want to keep an eye on MiA’s mangaka. I only hope that he’s adding these things for shock value or to establish the gruesomeness of the Abyss but it’s just so suspect.

Thank you for this video! My boyfriend and I really liked the first season for the world building, etc but we got too uncomfortable continuing. I’ve been trying to find a video reviewing the show that actually brings these issues up- the bigger UA-cam anime channels I watch would praise this anime and NEVER mention these things which I personally find very unsettling in itself…
As much as I like the world building, I'm so glad you pointed out the disturbing things that are so hard to ignore, especially since these characters are actually depicted as children not just fictional 'small adults'. It's like how I feel about another series called Jobless reincarnation as well that others praise it but I find it unwatchable.
That show has no salvation, is a pedo fantasy self insert, the dude, the male lead was throw out by their family members when they KNEW he put cameras in the bathroom to spy on her little niece !!!!! He was masturbating btw .... He was a step away for acting on her niece if more time pass... HIS NIECE!!!! Sorry but i can not forgive the obviously pervert disgusting dude he is. He was reward by ending his Journey as a harem ...yeah he married all the little girls he gromed HAHHAHAH how is that not an ode for pedos ??? But have You seen the pedo apologist in every single comment section talking about that anime ? "They forgive him cuz he change ?" HOW ??? HOW???
Omg yes!! People recommended that last anime to my boyfriend and his jaw dropped at how disgusting it is. He stopped watching it. We stopped watching MiA too.
@@kaga.mine. Fictional characters that are meant to represent underage girls. They are designed to look, talk and act like minors. It's still creepy. You lowkey gotta be a dumbass to say this.
I was shook after watching MiA on Netflix first. Not only is the age rating completely off (Guess people only watch the first 10 minutes when age rating media), but even with the right rating it would have been still controversial. Probably never watched something so off putting, yet intriguing at the same time. Still, I could never fully shake the feeling of watching something morally wrong and I had to recover for a couple of days after watching Season 1 and the movie, digesting my own moral stance on art and media.
I'm aware of people enjoying MIA while being disturbed by the author's clearly explicit fetishes, but I never thought that people ignores it because of how good the storytelling is. Tsukushi even made a point through Bondrewd's speech of curses and blessings of the abyss. While the story is great and all we can't deny that manga is the author's "fetish journey" "fetish diary" to be in fact, I mean he even showed interests in boob windows in the current chapter and surprisingly enough it's primarily adults that are subject of his fetish so far (though the other one has Loli aesthetic). One that I admired about this mangaka is that he doesn't hold back and even though he doesn't hold back about everything somehow he makes sure that it doesn't affect the story. Though it's still take a (creep) cave raider to fully enjoy his work. I'm that creep.
Boob windows aren't that uncommon in anime and ig as long as it's on adults it's acceptable but my main complaints come from the sexualisation of minors especially in the first season... especially with Reg
20:49 What you said here REALLY resonated with me! I love anime and have loved it for a long time, but as I’ve grown older, it’s become harder and harder for me to ignore some of the elements of anime that have become common place. Everything you mentioned here is a great example of why watching Made in Abyss is so difficult and makes my stomach churn (outside of the gruesome scenes). It really irks me when people defend it as “artistic representation” or “part of Japanese culture.” Neither of those reasons make something immune from criticism. As much as I appreciate anime for its creativity, the talent of the artists, and the entertainment value, there’s plenty of harmful tropes that flood most shows and should be discussed.
i think their age works at a very baseline, because it makes the “soft fun adventure fantasy” you would usually associate with young/cutesy characters really slam against the horrific reality of the world they live in. and in some ways i think riko’s childlike, unbreakable hope IS the reason they’re able to make it to the bottom (but i totally agree that a good amount of depictions of them are uncomfortable, and not in a good way)
@@denofpigs2575 I mean........yes? Uncomfortable for reasons that make the narrative and emotional impact stronger are good, uncomfortable for horny reasons are bad
I am not even sure hope is the right word. Riko genuinly loves and enjoys her Adventure. If she where to die now she might regret not having made it to the bottom but she would not regret her decicion to go on this journey. Riko knew her decicion to dive in to the Abyss would most likely result in a short live but she is willing to pay that price. And what she gets in return is exactly what she wants. For Riko this is a fun adventure. And looking at her happy expresion when she shows Prushka her scar I think in a way she even apriciates the hardships of her adventure. Riko is one ofthe happiest protagonists I know. Thats why the word hope feels of. It indicates the presense of fear and despaire and while there might have been some fear and despaire during close calls overall Riko does not seem to be scared or show much despire at all.
MiA certainly is..........something. The abyss itself and the world are so beautiful, the concept of "value" in the village so intriguing, everything is so deadly and yet wondrous at the same time...... But the whole time I'm watching it it's just..... Yeah...... Edited to add excitement over seeing you link Explanation Point! He's great.
Few years late, I decided to revisit this anime as I'd watched it when I was around 14. I'm 18 now, seeing some of the episodes was unsettling and I felt it was unbelieveably unnecessary. Like someone else said, it's good to know I'm not the only one who was uncomfortable.
i love the worldbuilding in made in abyss. i love all the different details of the world and how that world impacts the characters in different ways, which is the main appeal for me personally. i feel like theres 2 types of scenes in MiA: uncomfortable and problematic. uncomfortable usually has something directly to do with the story, explaining an aspect of the story to be brought up later (the elevator scene) while problematic is stuff like the near constant showing and telling of riko’s bowel movements. i cant really look past the more problematic stuff, i still enjoy the worldbuilding but man its so hard to get through certain scenes for a completely different reason than storytelling
Man, I wanna recommend the anime so bad to new and even experienced anime fans, but ugh I don’t ever wanna go through the explanation of all the weird crap that’s included…
Christ this comment section is disgusting. I loved the video its valid critisms that Eye patch wolf also pointed out and didnt get this nasty of a reaction. You can like the premise of something while being critical of content.
Thats how I felt about the original dragonball. They look so young initially. Made in abyss scratched that itch I've had for a darker anime for quite some time. I will admit that the third movie and season 2 were hard to watch though. I feel like made in abyss is doing well because it's covering several bases of horror. ( body disfiguration, fear of the unknown, impending and unstoppable death, monsters, visceral depictions of gore, and a little bit of atmospheric horror) It's a mixed bag driven forward by the misadventures of children.( like the goonies, goosebumps, and bokurano).
Thank you for this deep dive! Your videos are so relaxing to listen to and this is a subject I’ve been interested in since I started watching Made in Abyss. And I love that you reference other good videos to watch on topics you cover.
I feel like S1 is more tame with the weird stuff but S2 is so poisoned with it i couldnt even finish it. Even the violence in S2 feels more voyeuristic and exploitive than S1, which seems utilized to establish the brutality and danger of the abyss.
I noticed this in season one, but I figured it was just a case of Japan being Japan but even more than usual. Ended up watching the second season quite a while later and that very same strangeness returned with a vengeance to derail the entire narrative into a direction/ outcome that made no sense. I truly believe that the author is shooting himself in the foot by allowing his external interests to dominate the direction and flow of the story. So much of the weird stuff contributes nothing to the plot, yet screen time is still given to it. Instead of showing something interesting about the world that time is sacrificed for going back to "ayo, gotta dump". The overall premise of Made in Abyss is really interesting, but the author seems all too eager to piss all it's potential away to steer it into degeneracy.
MIA is a great series with some amazing world-building, amazing style and visuals, fantastic music and sound design, etc, and I love that ...but then it'll go and do something that just makes me think "why... why would you put this in your manga, and why did Citrus then feel the need to put it in the anime"
Everything in this video had me nodding along. I really wish I had watched this before the movie. It was so traumatic to watch and it was one of those things that when it ended, I just needed to breathe for however long to... think through it all and forget some other parts.
I tried for the most of what's covered in the first season to just deal and cope with the weirdness of the manga. I can deal with gruesome, I can deal with uncomfortable, and I can gaslight myself that the sense of uncomfortableness was intentional to make you feel raw and uneasy about how cruel and brutal the Abyss goes. Every weird thing related to Riko and Reg could be ignored as a "lose of innocence" story. Then we got to The City of the Unreturned and it got. So much harder. To cope with this. The inhabitants being these weird and unsettling yet kind of cute weirdos with bizarre moral compasses, it worked. The molesters trying to rip Riko's skin being punished by the Balancing, it kind of worked. The horrible past of Vueko and Irumyuu, it totally worked. The toilet, did not work (especially when you learn it is actually a Hollow! That's an employee of the inn!! Yeah!!!). Then Faputa... is when I could not make up any more excuses. I like her character, I cannot say she is not one of the best characters in the series. And everything post season 2 we have thus far just makes me like her more as an addition to the cast. But she is so OBVIOSULY fetish fuel. I can't even excuse her biting and touching Reg as innocent or scientific (in how I cope with Riko's behavior earlier) because she is very upfront about wanting to have his babies. The fucking perfume that smells like her ass' glands is so baffling at this point is funny. But her weirdness went down a bit as the story progressed and the newer weird sexualized stuff was being done by the new characters introduced in layer 7 which were all consenting mature adults so I was looking forward to- And then the amputee loli furry incest happened. And I have no words nor I can deal with their six nippled constantly flirting bullshit. No. Screw that. And the part that hits me the most? I know Tsukushi somehow will make them so sad and deep as characters that I will end up caring about them and like them. And that makes me incredibly mad
I might cautiously recommend the anime and it would be better if someone was there to skip over a part or two when they come up, but I would never EVER recommend the manga. It is crazy to me how this show even got made (never would have in the U.S.) because you realize that the anime is censoring these manga panels! Don't even get me started on the non-canon panels at the end of some chapters. The creator should not be allowed around kids. There is no excuse at all for these.
@@tattoocutiegal7629 ok, you got me there for not being specific I was refering to anyone involved with sex/nudity/fanservice in their concepts or that began with adult doujinshis and later draw for mainstream manga or light novels or that is/was a character designer for eroges that later got involved in a crime of similar nature I wanted to tell that not because one draws such stuff, like Akihito Tsukushi, does commit such crimes in the real life Rurouni Kenshin and Act Age weren't ecchi and the artists were jailed for pervy reasons (Act Age's one even more for physical contact)
everupme in the comments has basically said what i feel n it rly is upsetting since made in abyss is my most favorite show ever. the worldbuilding is insane n the concept itself is just so interesting, but the fact that the creator doesnt even bother to hide his disgusting fetishes makes it so hard for me to b able to share my love for it w my friends n family. like i wish i could so bad because without all the unnecessary sexual scenes, it would be so perfect. Ive really only found like 4 friends that i could watch this with. still, i still have anxiety that someone will ask about the manga on my shelf because the way i even found out about this series was because i impulsively bought 7 of the books at a bookstore with no way to even sneak a peek since it was wrapped lol. i cant find it in me to throw them out though, because overlooking the random pages, the art is so beautiful and expressive. so sad that someone with that mind has to have so much talent.
The world and story is so interesting but I can’t rewatch the show or try out whatever came out after the first season because it gives me such a bad icky feeling. I get just having to suck it up when it comes to consuming a lot of anime (sadly) and I do have my shows where I just turn my brain off to content I find gross so I can enjoy the entirety of the series. But something about Made in the Abyss progressively and shamelessly sexualizing it’s kid characters was too hard to look pass for me. This just shouldn’t be legal, even if it’s animation.
@@YukiXKohaku a lot of it went over my head like the bowel movements because I didn't view it as something that can even be sexualized (because it shouldn't be lol). But things like the boy's dong getting hard or apparently something with a butt plug (which I must've erased from memory because my sister brought it up when we talked about it. It's been a long time) are hard to miss and clearly uncomfortable even with the benefit of the doubt. It's stuff like that that makes it too hard to rewatch for me with the idea these were possibly written for sexualization, including the small things I didn't think on before.
In my case I can't stand the Chucky series, is more propaganda than horror and knowing how pissed the u.s. society is if certain characters die, is gonna be a mess I'm for freedom of expression on japanese media so Made in Abyss and other concepts can make what they want with their fictional children, after all, they're FICTIONAL; let's not end like the australian politicians
18:16 About the the mannequin, it looks very unusual and hard to understand... if you're not an artist. Getting consistently good anatomy is one of the hardest parts of putting out a lot of art, and having anatomical references for human forms is extremely common when it comes to being a full-time artist. You can look up "art reference mannequins" online right at this moment to see that it's not the most unusual item for artists, with a lot of different people selling them and a lot of different form factors for different artists' needs. You'll also notice that all the mannequins are nude. That's their intended use, as models for the natural human form. It's understandable to be a little weirded out by him taking its clothes off, but that's just because no one in the interview, including the mangaka, properly communicates that it's an artists' tool, at least not in a way that would come across easily to people who don't work in art. Now, it CAN be a part of something weird, but the fact of it existing doesn't illustrate that, and the connection isn't really demonstrated.
Honestly having the clothes on the form makes it weirder? 🤔 The characters don't wear that style of clothing so it' wouldn't be that useful as a reference for how garments might look in different poses. The skirt and blouse make the form look more similar to kids Tsukishi might see out and about in real life. The mannequin also looks more like a dress form to me than those generic wooden figures with limbs you can arrange in various poses.
I like made in abyss for the world building, but had to take a beat and think that the author isn’t just making loli torture fetish material. Still not sure, but I feel like season 2 is way more restrained than s1/dotds
22:23 I feel really validated and happy with this comment you made her. That movie just left me upset and angry then sad. I remember seeing it late at night and when they do the after the movie cute shorts i was like: "no! you can't just do this! this is wrong!" and then i stopped before seeing all the shorts.
While I love MiA and actually enjoy when stories include the gritty disgusting shit, I have to agree that I can't really defend the author for scenes like the licky toilet. I get it's trying to be "weird", but it sincerely comes off as fetish and it's certainly uncomfortable. I could 100% go without this type of unwarranted/inconsequential sexualization. However, I see baths and body fluids as more of a side effect of "being a living human", and I can appreciate the realism to include such scenarios in a setting where these things would indeed be relevant and could pose a serious challenge for survival. And yeah, putting kids through dark/gruesome shit is certainly A Way™ that can be used to set the tone you want the story to have. But like... being of the author's inclination towards children and children characters... it's absolutely impossible to separate the two, to the point where it's pretty hard to defend (or to want to defend). I also agree with you on the CP problem in Japan, it's much deeper and different from what we have in the west. While I try to perceive the story through the lens of the characters (kids innocently being kids), I'm still an adult and most people watching are too. We can tell when something goes beyond kids being kids, and sometimes in MiA, it does. I enjoy it a lot, but it really comes with a whole page of footnotes and disclaimers.
Yeah, I loved the anime at first, but when I started reading the manga I noticed a lot of... Questionable stuff that the anime mostly glossed over. Found out a bit later about, uh, some of the things the author likes to draw and I was like, yeah, I'm done with this series.
Mh, the point of the manga/anime/story is that everything is shown, filterless. It IS made to make you feel uncomfortable, sad, angry, disgusted, with how everything the characters going through being (mostly) horrible. Made in Abyss is Made in Abyss because of every little details. If you wouldn't be feeling bad about it, it wouldn't be the same anymore. And something I say to people: It's okay to not like something ! There are plenty of other mangas/animes/light novels out there, for everyone to enjoy, as is.

5:56 I commented on some other site while reviewing this episode that this moment is unnecessary and gross, and some people were so offended that they went on downvote hunt for my other reviews to lower my reputation
as someone who really enjoys the body horror aspects of made in abyss, i find the sexualized parts really gross. in the sexual scenes the kids are sort of clueless to sme extent which i feel really shows the viewers how innocent the kids are despite having been put in such gruesome situations. but i feel gross about how they pushed that detail into sexual scenes rather than instead using less gross stuff like instead, he could have written a scene in which theres a situation that older people would understand but young kids would be clueless to like maybe a conflict between two characters. another thing i'd like to touch on is how i noticed small bits of child psychology stuff like how riko was in the beginning which was her displaying curiosity and she doesn't really see reg as a human but a robot so she essentially treated him as more of an object to investigate. maybe i read into it too much but i can see some examples of how a real kids mind is, riko likely wasn't taught anything about what's right and wrong at the orphanage or at least not major stuff and we can see that from how she acts in future scenes. it doesn't justify any of the gross stuff though, even if it was the authors intent to show how a kids brain works and not weird fetish content. i love the show but i feel like it could be better if the creator didn't insert his weird fetishes into a story about kids.
well, the media can have questionable things and those that remove them for inclusivity crap deserve to fail unlike the estates of deceased british authors, Akihito Tsukushi won't succumb to "modern sensitivities" and will continue doing what he likes and he's talented
This isn't the real world and it's not trying to adhere to our rules. You're delusional if you think a world like the abyss would make sense psychologically.
there’s soo many things that can be removed from the story, such as the talks about regs body, and in the extras there are some weird things said by some characters eg vueko fantasising about what relationship riko and reg has. The manga itself is amazing and i love it, some things should be removed and it ANNOYS ME how amazing this show is but how its so controversial at the same time
that's how books are now, being revised and censored for the people that can't stand certain elements So I'm glad that japanese won't ever revise their content from their mangas, Made in Abyss will keep the creepiness and the sexiness for the likes and dislikes of the westerns
@@abrahamlupis9354 yeah, it's meant to be a story of dark and twisted elements, but soemthing like the sexuapisation of minors should be an world wide agreement that it is weird, western media is so much more tame then some mangas can be and ik how bad it can get. I don't 100% agree with all your criticisms but I seriously respect actually doing research, being charitable, and leaving it up to the viewers and not just turning your brain off the second something happens to a child on screen.
There's a certain level of discomfort that I feel enhances made in abyss, but it's surrounded by a bunch of stuff that makes me ask "is this necessary". America Is more tuned to violence so excessive bleeding is uncomfortable but probably more acceptable, Vuekos past is dark without being as graphic as it could have been, and the body horror of the 6th layer are all uncomfortable in ways that set the tone of this world and adds tension. The bathroom stuff, such as the toilet being a living thing never feels like it's adding to the horror and just makes me want whatever's on screen to move back to the plot. Even if I try to bend over backwards I cant think of reasons for why half of these things need to happen or be shown the way it is.
In the manga the pages in between chapters are often illustrations of the monsters and characters, like style sheets. And *[sigh]* all of the children are shown naked in highly adult poses, in some cases they’re even tied up bondage style, always blushing and sweating. It’s adult “fanservice”. It is undeniable. And it’s the reason why I’ll never buy hard copies of the manga for my collection because…those pages ought to be illegal to publish.
Why is nobody talking about that scene "i think it was in the movie but not sure" where the robot boy is sat in a chair with toture thing around and he has one of those fcking Pnis size ennanncer vacuming his pee or whatever . Realy shocked me out of nowhere .wanna talk about body fluids? Wtf was that
The fetishized torture of kids / blatant lolicon had me drop this show altogether. I think people don’t realize how much OF Made in Abyss, even the horror, can be considered erotic and tantalizing to so many viewers. I think this show is an immaculately written guro fest. Amazing ideas are totally saturated in kinky paint. The first season ruined me for a month, and the raw sense that Akihito WANTED these characters to suffer and be objectified as much as humanly possible with no hope in sight made me nauseous. It gave the sense that it had all been set up and knocked down in bad faith. People get blue in the face defending how beautifully real, and raw the show is while ignoring *why* it exists, and who it’s for. It’s about as tone deaf as people writing essays about guro/kink RPGs with the same blissful unawareness as a regular horror game. Fetish moments are simply written off as, “Wow, that was gross/weird” as though it’s not precisely the reason we’re here. Thank you for covering a little bit of the author’s intent in this video. I wish it were discussed/considered more.

I don‘t mind these fictional children getting in horrible situations. I mean, thank goodness they‘re fictional. For many physically existing children in the real world rn it‘s not really better :
The gore doesn't bother me much personally either, especially since it adds to the worldbuilding of MiA. The kids are in dangerous situations so it makes sense that they would be injured. It is unfortunate to think about real children in dangerous situations everyday but since the events of MiA are fantastical, at least its not depicting real life dangers. Maybe there is something to be discussed about depictions of real children in dangerous situations vs. animations of the same thing. Thank you for leaving your thoughts

I love this series for the story and how it is a unique experience where you cannot get from other stories in any other media. That said I'm not excusing any of these valid accusations towards the author's fetishizations and I will not fault anyone for backing out of the series for those reasons. It's hard to even make the art over artist argument here because it's the art itself that is problematic. Fact of the matter is I'm just tolerating it (for very personal reasons these kinds of things no longer bother or gross me out) but that doesn't mean anyone else should. It's unfortunate that many people couldn't get into a very unique and mind blowing story for this reason but it be how it is. I do have hopes that this will appear much less later in the story since the author had started focusing more on the legally aged characters for the last couple of recent chapters.
If someone is disgusted or rejects some scenes, maybe they should consider whether this anime is for them at all. This creator is like that and creates his own image of animation regardless of whether someone likes it or not. This anime contains a lot of scenes of gore and violence against children, which does not bother most viewers, but scenes of nudity and defecation do. So I advise some people to think twice about whether they really want to watch it, because despite all the cuteness it looks at first glance, this is not an anime for an emotionally immature viewer.
@@username.exenotfound2943If you used more than 2 brain cell you would also read the art were he finds weird that the people who claim notinding that is pedo territory for some reason are also completly fine with children mutilation and murder. @@spinosaurusstriker gore, violence and other brutal stuff is never a problem to these people, it's always only the nudity. Really shows the double standards they have.
@@rickchakraborty2087the thing is,gore and violence usually have a purpose in story and character development, the deliberate choice to include them can easily be attributed to "making the audience feel sad for/hate a character, showing the seriousness or danger of a situation, make the story give off a darker vibe etc". This is most of the time not the case with sexual themes in a non sexuality focused story, ESPECIALLY if they can easily be removed from the story without really changing anything because where will you attribute these deliberate choices to include them then ? Other than "the author is sexually attracted to this" or" it's fan service".? The only exception to this is in the show could be parts of Vueko's backstory because the implications of sexual abuse ARE important for understanding how she ended up in that crew and for making the audience feel empathy for her, but that's pretty much it, everything else blatantly served no purpose and gives off red flags purely because of the fact that it serves no purpose. That's why people are moved by these and not the violence and gore.
But I’m his audience 💀 like yes highlighting the ignorance of children is necessary but it doesn’t need to be done with nudity, and sexual undertones especially for Riko who is 12-14!! Like some people are mature enough to understand this but others might legitimately take it the wrong way and attempt to add romantic themes between mentally underdeveloped children. That said weather or not reg and faputa are actually children is questionable given Faputa is at-least 150 and cognitively not quite a child understanding or revenge, suffering, and her justifications for being angry as well as her displayed patience indicate higher thought. Her and regs relationship although reg’s memory is gone is pre established and confirmed, but Prushika, the twins, Riko, Vueko all have unnecessary nudity displays and were and are clearly children mentally, physically and by age you can’t even make excuses there, part of the world is reflecting cruelty but it happens way to often to children and not enough to adult character’s present
I really love MiA but the whole backstory of the village, you know, what happened to Irumyuui... It makes me literally so uncomfortable. I can't think about it, I can't re-watch it, I can't engage with it. While trying to rewatch it, I realized the only reason I was able to get through it in the first place must've been because I was sick with a fever at the time and only operating at 10% brain capacity. Anything more than that, and I wouldn't have been able to do it. And even at this low level of engagement, I was horrified and literally bawling. It was traumatizing to me, like it seems the movie was to you, the movie that I personally really enjoyed. I just feel like with MiA, there comes a point that it will hit you with something that you're personally extremely uncomfortable with. For some that point comes earlier, for some it comes later, for some it might not have happened yet, but I'm like 90% sure it will. And while these horrific things can be deconstructed to make sense within the story and its themes, just like the controversies you listed, it's just as valid to not want to engage with them. I honestly feel it's not only a weird "I really want to recommend it but I feel like I should give some disclaimers", we should all absolutely give disclaimers about the horrifying things that this anime does. It's a horror, and every horror should come with a list of content warnings, because while yes, as a horror viewer, I get into it looking to be horrified, there are just some things that I wish to know about beforehand; simply because they can be so traumatizing going in blind (and most likely still when you go in knowing about them). It's just common curtesy at this point to warn and inform people of what they'll get themselves into with this show. So thanks for making the video and informing people of just that ❤ I think it's always important we talk about these things, be that just about a single part or more all encompassing, and you did a good job touching upon many topics and giving a well rounded overview of what is there, what might be uncomfortable about it, and how it can be deconstructed as well!
I watched and loved season 1, and I think I didn't really even notice the questionable content because I never watch anything without multitasking anymore and probably missed it as a result. Once I learned that the creator is a straight up pedophile and has even been caught with CP, I had to seriously think twice about supporting it further. I didn't see any of the movies, but I made it partway into S2, E1 and I just couldn't justify going any further. I really loved this story and am sad it had to go this way, but I feel better not knowing then continuing on with all that in mind. I don't necessarily blame people who can separate the art from artist, but this is one where I can't.
Akihito Tsukushi wasn't caught with real child porn, he has his fetishes but he wouldn't go that far the fans and companies support him and we thank him for not pulling punches on the manga of Made in Abyss
I think moe is used in made in abyss in the same way as its used in madoka majika. Basically, I think it's used on purpose to subvert your expectations going into the show
Yeah this show gives off early warning signs like how riko has drawn a complete anatomical chart of reg's stuff and goes about describing it in detail. Thats in ep 2...

UPDATE: Hey All! Thanks for watching the video and leaving your thoughts!
this is the reason your my fav anime essayist. always be critical of anime 💖✨
I'm never going to watch made in abyss 😂
I mean, the author literally used to create actual child p*rn*graphy doujin before Abyss, so…nothing deep to analyze or argue here. It’s right there on the surface.

I just want people to be comfortable acknowledging both aspects. Thanks for leaving your thoughts Samantha!

@@abrahamlupis9354with eroges, it’s the opposite problem. A lot of authors wanted their stories told but couldn’t get them out there without adding the sex scenes.
“Mona Lisa with a swastika” sounds a maurizio cattelan artwork.

(But the fetish/sexual/weird scenes piss me off)
Yeah, I just thought it was to highlight the danger and horror of the Abyss by having more vulnerable characters diving in.
It's a lot worse in the manga so much so that I think the anime is better because it tones the questionable stuff down

What disturbs me the most is the fact that te manga is even more explicit. Not to mention the extras, that contains a good amount of unnecessary "fun facts".

I think I've had my fill of seeing children bleeding, vomiting and shitting themselves. 🤢
While watching S2 I was constantly thinking to myself "if I have to see Riko pooping ONE MORE DAMN TIME..."

I literally left by the second time. The first time, whatever, just another unfunny anime joke. But the next time, I just felt physically sick and realized I wasn't even like, a third or half way in yet.

to be honest, I think this story would've been better if the characters were instead mid to older teenagers and there were a lot less weird stuff.

The last episode of season 1 was not memorable something that stuck with me however was the third movie…
At least you backed out before the roller coaster really picked up speed.
I think its sad, cause season 1 was borderline not cool with me, but like in season 2 it felt more like it appealed to the "demographic"

Promised neverland was great, no overly gross or fanservicey stuff with anybody as far as I've read, thank god.

I could only get like 4 or 5 episodes into the anime before i had to drop it. Pretty clear the author has some diaguisting fetishes involving children
as long as he doesn't involve a real child, one can support Made in Abyss
i think their age works at a very baseline, because it makes the “soft fun adventure fantasy” you would usually associate with young/cutesy characters really slam against the horrific reality of the world they live in. and in some ways i think riko’s childlike, unbreakable hope IS the reason they’re able to make it to the bottom (but i totally agree that a good amount of depictions of them are uncomfortable, and not in a good way)
If it's uncomfortable in a good way is it really uncomfortable?

Man, I wanna recommend the anime so bad to new and even experienced anime fans, but ugh I don’t ever wanna go through the explanation of all the weird crap that’s included…
well, recommend it and let them experience the situations, that's how I dealt with Dokuro-chan, Elfen Lied, Steel Angel Kurumi, Gantz, etc.

Literally let out an audible gasp when i found out those kids are 12. it might be a case of art style but they look 7 at most
Thats how I felt about the original dragonball.

But her weirdness went down a bit as the story progressed and the newer weird sexualized stuff was being done by the new characters introduced in layer 7 which were all consenting mature adults so I was looking forward to-
And then the amputee loli furry incest happened. And I have no words nor I can deal with their six nippled constantly flirting bullshit. No. Screw that.
And the part that hits me the most? I know Tsukushi somehow will make them so sad and deep as characters that I will end up caring about them and like them. And that makes me incredibly mad
at the end Made in Abyss exists, and the best part is that sensitive readers won't stick or stink the manga like they did with Roald Dahl

There are plenty of other mangas/animes/light novels out there, for everyone to enjoy, as is.
well said.
Seeing 99% of this comment section being "I like this series, BUT" makes me both sad and confused.

You can still make the audience feel uncomfortable through all the other aspects of the story without doing 'fan' service child soft porn, that added nothing to the story.
5:56 I commented on some other site while reviewing this episode that this moment is unnecessary and gross, and some people were so offended that they went on downvote hunt for my other reviews to lower my reputation
I wish there was a way to watch the show without all the weird sexualization scenes because it would still be the same show just less gross
as someone who really enjoys the body horror aspects of made in abyss, i find the sexualized parts really gross. in the sexual scenes the kids are sort of clueless to sme extent which i feel really shows the viewers how innocent the kids are despite having been put in such gruesome situations. but i feel gross about how they pushed that detail into sexual scenes rather than instead using less gross stuff like instead, he could have written a scene in which theres a situation that older people would understand but young kids would be clueless to like maybe a conflict between two characters. another thing i'd like to touch on is how i noticed small bits of child psychology stuff like how riko was in the beginning which was her displaying curiosity and she doesn't really see reg as a human but a robot so she essentially treated him as more of an object to investigate. maybe i read into it too much but i can see some examples of how a real kids mind is, riko likely wasn't taught anything about what's right and wrong at the orphanage or at least not major stuff and we can see that from how she acts in future scenes. it doesn't justify any of the gross stuff though, even if it was the authors intent to show how a kids brain works and not weird fetish content. i love the show but i feel like it could be better if the creator didn't insert his weird fetishes into a story about kids.
well, the media can have questionable things and those that remove them for inclusivity crap deserve to fail
unlike the estates of deceased british authors, Akihito Tsukushi won't succumb to "modern sensitivities" and will continue doing what he likes and he's talented

This isn't the real world and it's not trying to adhere to our rules. You're delusional if you think a world like the abyss would make sense psychologically.
that was a great way to spend 24 minutes, thank you for your content!
thank you for watching!
there’s soo many things that can be removed from the story, such as the talks about regs body, and in the extras there are some weird things said by some characters eg vueko fantasising about what relationship riko and reg has. The manga itself is amazing and i love it, some things should be removed and it ANNOYS ME how amazing this show is but how its so controversial at the same time
that's how books are now, being revised and censored for the people that can't stand certain elements
So I'm glad that japanese won't ever revise their content from their mangas, Made in Abyss will keep the creepiness and the sexiness for the likes and dislikes of the westerns
@@abrahamlupis9354 yeah, it's meant to be a story of dark and twisted elements, but soemthing like the sexuapisation of minors should be an world wide agreement that it is weird, western media is so much more tame then some mangas can be and ik how bad it can get. But I'll stand my opinion some things should only be said not shown, why would you show a 12 year old being strung up naked, you know how people will take that 💀
@@abrahamlupis9354 also its a bit weird how your calling it sexy, these are children that are mostly portrayed in this way, its not sexy, its fucking gross, MiA is never meant to be sexy its menwt to be dark and twisted which is why I do not mind with some things, eg the punishment of stringing up naked, that punishment shows the ideas and values in the world plus it is a punishment of humiliation, but it should never be shown

Casual MiA fans: this show is great but man it’s disturbing and gross and they keep showing it and it involves kids, I feel like it would be much better without it cause it adds nothing to the story, I wonder if any other fandom feels like this
Hardcore MiA & Beserk fans: meh. I’ve seen worse.
When They Cry fans: *laughs for an eternal summer*

This video is about to blow up with kpop fans?
Even if I try to bend over backwards I cant think of reasons for why half of these things need to happen or be shown the way it is.
tsukushi pls lock in bro 🙏😭
In the manga the pages in between chapters are often illustrations of the monsters and characters, like style sheets. And *[sigh]* all of the children are shown naked in highly adult poses, in some cases they’re even tied up bondage style, always blushing and sweating. It’s adult “fanservice”. It is undeniable. And it’s the reason why I’ll never buy hard copies of the manga for my collection because…those pages ought to be illegal to publish.
well, they aren't and Made in Abyss is happily circulating without more warnings than being rated +18
I'm looking forward to the 12th volume
Yeah, Cuties taught us that real children shouldn't do certain things
Funny that the Gore doesn’t bother you but the sexualized scenes do… 🧐
@@abrahamlupis9354 that abomination is the thing I can't believe Netflix allowed to exist, like who bribed them to release that?
@@kimitohanahala8674 Netflix only paid for distribution, it was made by french, directed by a black woman that wanted to show this and that all the feminists accepted
So I advise some people to think twice about whether they really want to watch it, because despite all the cuteness it looks at first glance, this is not an anime for an emotionally immature viewer.
its not emotionally immature to say fanservicing minors is pedo territory
@@username.exenotfound2943If you used more than 2 brain cell you would also read the art were he finds weird that the people who claim notinding that is pedo territory for some reason are also completly fine with children mutilation and murder.
Would it be fair for me to call those people psichopaths? Is the girl on the video a psycho?
Finding the specialization of children appalling is not emotionally immature
The creepiness of the anime just didn't do it for me and I'm a person who loves creepy stuff.
There's nothing wrong with MiA. Tsukushi knows himself and his audience and caters to them accordingly.
Akihito Tsukushi wasn't caught with real child porn, he has his fetishes but he wouldn't go that far
the fans and companies support him and we thank him for not pulling punches on the manga of Made in Abyss
"I learned that the creator is a straight up pedophile and has even been caught with CP"
Now that's just straight up slander and misinformation.
