  • This first video goes over some basics and installing the power transformer onto the chassis.
    This is the start of the build series of my open source production amp. This amp is available for sale in limited quantities and possibly will be sold later as a kit. This is a VERY detailed step by step, wire by wire, solder joint by solder joint video series meant to serve as the instruction manual for assembly.
    Edit: I forgot to link the calipers!

    For rectangular cutouts I like to use a jigsaw with a fine-tooth HSS metal blade. I slow down the speed of the saw and then have good control over how/where it cuts. Taping up the sheet metal first so that the jigsaw doesn't scratch the paint. Works both for soft metals as well as steel.

    I am so glad that you are starting your amplifier production! If I didn't have a tube preamplifier & amplifier I would buy one from you. I hope you are very successful but, don't get overworked. Glad to see your subscribers are up as well!

    The IEC connector, exactly the way I do it. Usually a bit smaller then I actually need. And the use a vile to get the exact size. Just wondering what is the thickness of the chassis? Ow.. and metric, for the win! haha

    Concise, clear instructions; a good intro to what's ahead. 😊 Some countries may require a green/yellow wire for the main mains earth connection.

      People need to wire mains by the code where ever they live. I can't possibly know the color codes for wires worldwide! :)

    I've found that heating the labels with a blow dryer softens the adhesive so it all comes off with the label. A heat gun will also work but you have to be careful because they can damage the finish if you leave it on too long.

    My Japanese vernier caliper is now 60 years old. Chinese rulers are inaccurate! Lest I forget, a great video.

    Oh geez, Stephe. A piece of metal got stuck in up your eye? Glad it didn’t blind you. That’s scary.
    Beautiful prefabrication work. Getting a chassis ready for parts isn’t easy, especially when working with steel rather than aluminum. I got into building guitar effects pedals decades ago, and drilling out an aluminum box is SO much easier than steel, but as you said, bigger aluminum chassis are just not as strong as steel.
    FWIW, I’ve had the same pair of calipers for probably 25 yrs, and they’re still working fine. The right tools for the job is a necessity.

    Sorry to hear about your eye accident, it's damn scary! I always work in glasses, and sometimes use a face shield. A leftover from the pandemic :).
    Making holes in the corners when cutting a rectangular hole is the way, the result will look elegant after you cut it with a rotary tool, with greatly reduced risk of cutting beyond the hole. It's best to cut shorter than you would normally need, and then break the remaining scrap out, some filing and it's good to go.
    I use an automatic center punch, it's very handy. Classic vernier caliper for me too. Mine is 1980s Polish vintage, and I still use it.

    I cut out the power connector as you described but I put 4 or 5 layers of masking tape on the chassis to cover around the area. If you have masking tape that is as wide as the height of the chassis even better. I then draw the area I need to cut out. The masking tape helps the cutting wheel from skipping around so much and if it does jump around the chassis is still protected by the masking tape.

    I just bought an very old and ugly 2 * EL34 amp. As it happens the main transformer has exactly the same windings and voltage. The OPT had a discontinuity on one of the anode connections, so i am very curious about the rest of your project. I will use a GZ34 for rectification. There were 2 vintage Philips EL34 in the amp. They measured on my tube tester as new and paired YEAH!!! And it has a very good choke, I never build an amp without one. I paid 120 Euro.

    You can buy a square punch just like the tube socket punch and it is so easy.

    many times I have had to run wires without grommets. what I did was to use a fine rat tail file and smooth the holes very well first. I use grommets when I have them.

    • @adamphillips1263
      @adamphillips1263 8 місяців тому

      Not using a grommet is an opportunity to operationally test the chassis ground. I suppose one could use one sleeve of hard shrink tube and get some level of protection.

    • @SkunkieDesignsElectronics

      Hmm risk a short on a device with hundreds of volts inside to save $7.50 buying a kit with a lifetime supply of grommets?

    for me a jig saw with a metal cutting blade is the way to go, easy peasy and lots of control. I DO have a bench vice that can hold the chassis while sawing though. Freehand without a vice or clamp is not going to cut it (pun intended).

    @Skunkie. Would it be possible to have you make up the chassis with all the holes drilled out? Then, I would get and install the parts myself. I would be interested In that. If so, what would be the cost?

    • @SkunkieDesignsElectronics
      @SkunkieDesignsElectronics  8 місяців тому

      @@SkunkieDesignsElectronics Okay, that's fair enough. I will stick with my original plan. I am going to build my EL34 amp on a Dynaco ST-70 chassis. Granted your chassis is nicer and, of course, made for it. But I don't mind sacrificing aesthetics to keep costs down. Heck, if the amp sounds fine on a breadboard with NO chassis. I am good with that too!
