Is the melted joint actually in the middle of one of the lark's heads? So if that joint fails the buckle falls off?

It shouldn’t fail because the Cows Hitch/Larks Head will take the strain from the tension with the buckle. If the melt is done right it is strong enough for within a weave where there is no real tension, but of course you should test your joints before starting to weave a bracelet.
