Art (whether it be pictures, stories, music, video games, etc) is a completely subjective matter. If you like Cats (as a play, as a film, or both), great! If you don’t, fantastic! That’s the beauty of subjective concepts. There’s no right or wrong answer; it’s based entirely on your opinion.

The only reason I didn’t like Cats the movie was because of the way they did the story... The original musical is messy and confusing and that’s kind of what makes it fun. They kind of over explained and simplified everything in the movie so I felt that ruined it. Also, some of the designs of certain characters made it really hard to figure out which character was which. I believe they could’ve done a lot better with the CGI, yes, but I can’t say it’s the worst I’ve seen. The main thing with it is the faces, I’d say. I love the original musical- it’s my favorite actually. I just wish they would’ve captured the essence of the original and portrayed it a lot better. I just feel bad that the animators that did the incredible amount of work on that CGI had to be bashed down because it didn’t look the greatest.
Ami Ru Ro Agreed. Should've either stick to the makeup or, at least, come up with more original textures and costumes for the Jellicles. As for the story, I remember seeing a comment on a different video talking about what made the 1998 cast memorable; it was more community driven and felt like a group you would want to befriend. Still, what they should've done was make a prequel of sorts to the musical and show why the tribe hated Grizabella or what was Demeter's history with Macavity.

Hey Illy I saw your video about cats and I just figured I'd say I liked it I'm a big fan of the actual stage performance play and I have many a favorite of the Moon characters you see dancing and sing telling story a story through the songs and I just thought that you have really good taste when it comes to musicals.
Not gonna lie, I have loved Cats the theatre production since I was very small. My parents had it on video and I would watch it over and over, singing the songs and dancing along! And I saw it live too, before it was pulled from the UK and adored that as well. I recently watched the movie and while I thought it wasn't even close to as good, I still enjoyed the music and songs. Glad to see another Cats person ❤️

That theory kinda taught me kinda how a cult works...
When I saw cats the musical I was like 8 and in the beginning it’s all dark. Then these cat people come up all around you with creepy a** glowing eyes, and the music’s all weird with dramatic clarinets. Because if this, in had a full blown PANIC ATTACK in the theatre. I determined to watch the show cause it was going off broad way in the next month or so, so I wanted to soak up all of the possibly weird energy. Other than that the musical was amazing tho.
I have had the joy of seeing some musicals in person because my friend's mom took us. One of which was phantom of the Opera. At the end of the show, she asked us what was our favorite part of the show. My friend said the romance. I looked her dead in the eyes and said the pyrotechnics. It made her laugh.
I’ve never seen Cats the musical or movie, and never had the urge to. I was all about the rolling of the eyes when Cats was brought up. Now I NEED to watch both!

All of the visuals in this video that were not Illy's animation or from the 2019 movie are from the 1998 direct-to-video musical film. It's pretty good. If you like the musical, ballet, acrobatics, and a little bit of stage magic. I'm not really a fan of the musical as a whole, but it definitely has some cool parts.
That's the version I grew up with and was the clips shown in this video!!
The stage costumes and makeup from the DVD recording from the 90s is incredible and the movie really made a dent in any progress cats made in being seen as not so bad or weird. I love it so much and it makes me sad that most people don't and that this movie is the first experience so many are having with cats.
Back in 1996 my parents took my grandparents to London (UK) for my grandparents 51st wedding anniversary and I taged along since my gran was terrified from travelling to the UK (this was the woman who took us on a 4 hour yacht trip to through our homeport each year, but was afraid of a 90 minute ferry trip). On our second night we had frontrow seats at the performance of Cats. And for those who never witnessed the musical live, part of the sets rotates with the frontrow moving along. Also there was circular hole in the stage in front of us and we joked before the show a cat would come out; and when the show began one of the perfomers did come and crawled on the stage and we had to hold in our laughter

I think part of the reason why they made a movie is because some people don’t have the time and/or money go see musical shows, and some people prefer to be able to watch stuff at home. That is just what I think is why they made a movie (at least part of the reason), I agree with the rest of the vid.
Victoria isn’t just a background dancer, she had a whole ballet solo in the beginning after the Jellicle Cat song.
I can relate. My favorite movie is Garfield Gets Real, another cat movie that people hate because of its CGI, and because it’s just weird.

At least Garfield gets real is better than the live-action Garfield movies well except for the second one that’s my purrrrsonal guilty pleasure
Another theory for the shimbolshanks number is that it was sung by all dancers, so the song is actually in tempo, the other songs used a diffrent method and the tempo is everywhere and you can hear the orchestra struggling to stay with the singers because they are sort of doing their own thing.
But with dance you need to stay in time, it's what keeps everything together and not fall apart.
I am a theater kid but I have never seen the actual Cats musical (In my defense, I've been rewatching Hamilton for the past year). I did, however, see the movie and I didn't even make it all the way through. In fact, just a little bit after Old Deuteronomy showed up, I disappeared. But I am a HUGE cat person. I actually watched the Cats movie with my cat. So beat that, people. Also, Illymation, you are so amazing! I love your videos anf I hope you keep up the good work (I know you will, no worries).

Let me put it this way: Just because a pile of dirt is standing next to a larger pile of dirt doesn't mean that it suddenly became less dirty
Ok, but I actually think the horny part in the original works (for the most part). While there's not really a real plot and the events are up for interpretation for a large part of the play, I think the first act's focus on what is supposedly Victoria's first Jellicle Ball is quite beautiful. It reads to me like some sort of sexual awakening thingy, and if they took out that one immersion-breaking tiddy grab I would be totally fine with it. With the 2019 movie, they left some of the horny parts and now it just feels like there's no reason for them to be there.

My mom introduced me to the musical and she said she watched it live when she was about 12 and she even bought the tapes so we could listen to it in the car! As a theater kid myself, I've been told _Cats_ is the black sheep of the theatrical community. It's a play that you either absolutely love, or you absolutely hate. I get that some things don't translate well to film, but then again _Cats_ doesn't exactly have a plot per say. It doesn't mean you can't get a good film out of it (maybe work on the script a bit), but this show was meant as an experience rather than an in-depth story. If it was an animated feature produced by Steven Spielberg (like it was originally intended), maybe it would have had a better chance at the box office. But as is, I think it'll just get a future cult following similar to _The Rocky Horror Picture Show_ or _The Room_ .
Andrew Lloyd Webber is to theater what George Lucas is to film. He can be talented, and has revolutionized the industry (if not made a lot of money), but not all of his projects hit bullseye.

Ok, this is fair. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, no matter how many people disagree. Like, for instance, out of all Andrew Lloyd Webber's musicals, I only like Phantom of the Opera. I think its an amazing story with amazing characters, and I love it more than myself sometimes. XD But that's my opinion. and not everyone will agree. So... lets all embrace ours and others opinions, yeah?
I agree, I don't like many musicals, but damn, phantom is so good. I love the classical music, the characters, and how the mask changes for every actor. I really love it. Cats wasn't ever something I was interested in, and the movie was kinda a flop.

@@devilh0rnsinc not really. It's not exactly my kinda thing. Seeing people in catsuits isn't something I'm interested in, and I didn't like the music all that much.
