She did come in like a hurricane singing "Stay With Me Baby". I agree..Patti LaBelle would also tear this up & kick off her shoes while singing it on stage. The Righteous Brothers' Bobby Hatfield pours out his heart singing this song too. His voice & vocal range are off the charts.
The version with the guy singing was probably Steve Marriott. He was pocket dynamite. Lorraine's version was played regularly in the slow section near closing time in club's everywhere.
I believe I was eighteen when this song came out; and you're right to imply that Janis Joplin's covers made us forget for whom these song were written for: Garnett Mimms and Cry Baby, Erma Franklin and Ball And Chain, and Lorraine Ellison and Stay With Me.
I first heard this song when an ex played a tape he had made up. This was in 1987 and I made a copy of the his mixtape and he hadn't wrote down who the singers were and for years I didn't know who sang this song.
The story goes that the studio and musicians were booked for Frank Sinatra but for some reason, he didn't turn up. Lorraine Ellison was hoping for some studio time and was given the opportunity at the last minute but had to do it in one take. No idea if it's true but I like to think it is. Sadly, she didn't do a great deal after this stunning song. Another great voice that was in desperate need of a good manager.
I have heard this song before sometime ago, but hadn't thought of it for ages and didn't know who sang it .. Loved hearing this now, and Lorraine's voice is amazing .. But I can see why it would make you think of Janis Joplin .. It's definitely her type of song too .. In fact, her excellent "Cry Baby" sounds very similar to this song in its chorus .. Check it out and see .. Wayne
This is a bit of a classic, isn't it? The kind of song which comes back to your mind years later and you find yourself belting it out. This is wonderful, of course. It was released in 1966 and unfortunately was not a big hit anywhere. And it's made for Lorraine Ellison, not Janis Joplin, even though Janis also recorded this. We'll have to get some PP Arnold played sometime.
All I see when I hear this song is Chris O'Dowd mugging along to it in the movie The Boat That Rocked. 😂 But I remember thinking it was an amazing recording even when I watched the movie for the first time.
Hello Harri, just subscribed today. So, just watched your reaction to Bob Seger's, "Turn the Page". Had to get a recommendation in for him, it's "Come to Papa". You're gonna dig it.
This classic belongs to Lorraine Ellison. She was the first to record and release it. Altho' Lorraine may not have been a household name, I'll guarantee nobody sings this song like she does - and she did it in ONE take in 1966.
I agree the song belongs to Lorraine! As I recall, I remember an interview back in the 60s with Laura Nyro saying she loved this song, so I had to seek it out! It's killer -- get's me every time!
The story goes that Frank Sinatra had booked an orchestra for a recording session but cancelled for some reason. Lorraine's producer heard about it somehow and had Lorraine fill the spot resulting in this magnificent recording. In the special features of the movie "Pirate Radio-The Boat That Rocked", one of my faves, the character Simon lip syncs to this after his wife leaves him after 17 hours of marriage.
This is my introduction to Lorraine Ellison. What an amazing treat to end the day. How have I missed this gem all these years?
When I first listened to this Song, I couldn‘t believe ist was true. So impressive, So passionate. Brilliant!

Yes Harri This is a gut wrenching song. I know it from somewhere

DAWN!!!! You were still in the club during the closing time slow section???? 😂🤣😂
What a great voice! Great pick and analysis Harri!
Ahe does have a greqt voice indeed
This is the original version from 1966, covered by many artists including Janis Joplin and Mary J Blige.
Wow Janis? I dis say this song was made for her
Congratulations on 60k subscribers Harri! 💐🎉🎈🌼🌺✌️
Wow goosebumps geezer , unbelievable voice 👏

Man, she tore it up. It's new to me as well.

Wow
That's the story I've always read, as well.
This is awesome!!! The only version I ever heard of this was from the movie soundtrack "The Rose" sung by Bette Midler. Thank you for doing this!!!

And another you might not be familiar with, "Holding on to Yesterday" by Ambrosia. Gonna dig it, baby!
Terry Reid also recorded a version of this song, but this is the definitive one.
Listen To Esther Phillips " And I Love Him" Cover of the Beatles "And I Love Her" and her Rendition of "Release Me"

And backed by Keith Emerson and The Nice
The guy is Steve Marriott of the Small Faces & Humble Pie. Duffy also does a brilliant version of this .worth checking out.

Hi Harri, just saw your reaction to Both Sides Now by Joni Mitchell. Check out, "Help Me" if you don't already know it.
Maybe in the 80's you listen the David Coverdale version!
Regards
Antonio
Bette Midler did a most excellent cover of this for the movie The Rose
I thought she messed this song up with all that screaming and hollering. Never liked her cover
i just love your videos bro please listen to home free my church or Elvira

Terry Reid does a great rendition of this song. Check it out, if you get a chance ....
All done in one take, magic.
I've heard many artists sing this song but my favorite is by Duffy.
The male version was by the late great Bobby Hatfield but he couldn’t TOUCH IT like Lorraine Ellison did it! No one can!
It was said she recorded this song in one take. She was disillusioned with the business. She did not get her due. R.I.P.
the legend is that she collapsed after recording this
I'm familiar with Bobby Hatfield's version, and Janis Joplin's version. This is really nice, but I like their grittier versions better.
She died in 1983 aged 51
I do not like anyone that over sings a song and reminds me of Janis Joplin.. I love Ms. Etta James.. ♠W.G.
Damn. And I thought Bette sang it good…
