I live above 2 charity shops and they drive me crazy. They both charge so much for their items and I know how much they throw away! One fills a dumpster and the other one fills 3 bins every week and it’s all going in the landfill. If they don’t get the price they want they chuck it and lock their bins like it’s the Crown Jewels when actually it’s rubbish to them. They could have a free box but they’re apparently not allowed to do that. I’ve taken things from their bins and put it on free sites and everything goes..no need to bin it. Also 20 years ago I clothed my son from charity shops when I had nothing but you rarely see kids clothes anymore. You’re right Ricky, they don’t give a damn about people in real need now.

i gave a bag of clothes into them and they threw it in the bin as it wasnt good enough
I’ve seen the backs of charity shops packed high with donated stuff, practically drowning in donations to the point they are regularly refusing new donations 🤷🏾♀️. Items over priced and some refuse to just reduce the price, get rid of the stuff. Thought there the UK is under a “cost of living crisis “?🤷🏾♀️.🤔🤔🤔

Totally agree with you. Charity shops have changed and got greedy. Except the small ones. I volunteer in a local independent charity shop. Everything is £1-5. We only put out great quality stuff, getting loads of donations and selling like crazy. Because most local comes in for a blather and because they know it's cheap. Not one person gets any money, everyone including "shop manager" and trustees are volunteers. All money made is going back to different locally based projects.
Blankets/open toiletry goes to an old people home.
Donated uniforms going back to the schools who gives away for families in need.
We even have local pub donating dry food parcels, which we place on the table and everyone can take it (no questions asked)
And also have a FREE box, it's always full with different things.
What they/we do is brilliant and would need more like this (this is in Scotland)
💯 in agreement! It’s very disheartening when you realise they no longer are there as a charitable cause for the community they serve. Managers think they’re antique dealers or vintage clothing experts
Unfortunately the days of charity shops will soon be over. They have simply got greedy and priced themselves out of the market. They were set up to raise money but also allow people on low income to afford things, now they are pricing as high as e-bay and amazon because they think they can compete with resellers. Big mistake
I couldn’t agree more. Keep the prices reasonable and they will sell a lot more. More and more often now I walk out of charity shops with nothing because although I may have seen things I like I won’t pay the inflated prices. They just won’t move stock like that
Our local charity shops are simply collection points for eBay. Anything good that comes through the door goes on eBay and only the crap/broken/worn stuff appears in the shop. I think this is probably the future for charity shops as more and more of them become eBay-enabled.

Most sensible thing you have ever said!! Charity shops do need to make money, but wouldn’t they make more if they shifted more quicker? Rather than leave stuff on a shelf at a ridiculous price.

You're absolutely bang on mate, it's the same everywhere, unfortunately. I'm a primary school teacher, part-time reseller, and parents can't afford to shop at charity shops anymore. We rely on donations from other parents to clothe our kids. Primark is actually cheaper in many cases. I'm not sure if you've done it, but when i mention the silly prices being charged for fake gear, the abuse, I get it outrageous!

I blame Mary Portas. She completely screwed over the Charity Shop model, basically encouraging them to overcharge on everything. Bargains can still be found but it takes a lot of digging

I agree, I go to a local shop where everything is £1.00, I get white stuff seasalt east levi's etc but I buy loads and it's always really busy, I bet their turnover is way better than the 'big' names.

I noticed this since covid that charity shop prices have got crazy. I've seen items that have been sitting on the shelf for months because the price is ridiculous. The little independent charity shops must have way better turn over.
What annoys me is some of these charity shops overprice stuff and have a sign up so no more donations ridiculous as full.
They do slip up though even the big name shops but you have to keep going in them every day.
Totally agree Ricky well said, manager in a charity shop near me said the volunteers think it’s immoral to buy from them and resell on, I said if you put £5 on and you get £5 what’s the issue? No response!
how often do they think people willing to spend 200 on a pair of shoes go to charity shops? resellers are basically just middlemen for people who want a certain item but dont want to spend forever hunting round charity shops trying to find it cheap

You just summed up what I’ve been saying for 18 months, spot on, greedy greedy charity shops, would love to start seeing all the big named ones close down, nothing charitable about them they are scum. All smoke & mirrors. Ain’t been in a charity shop sourcing for over a year.

im not one to hold back anymore if i go into a chartiy shop and i see them crazy prices i will stand and ask them how or why they feel like they can charge this much, had £40 for a primark coat in my local one, theyre almost robbing people, but seems to always be barnarods which are nuts with pricing

Totally agree with all sentiments. I've spoken with a few shops now and built up a relationship with a couple by being honest about what I do. I would love to spend all of my money in charity shops knowing that they are getting money for a good cause for an item that would probably be sat there for ages but 9 times out of 10 the prices are out of reach even for just ordinary punters
20 years ago while studying, one of out tutors had an experience working in charity organisations. He said that only 2% is actually going to charity, the rest as you said going mostly to CEO pockets. Prices went mad, and there is nothing to buy nowadays, I use to find lots of football shirts in just couple of my local shops by visiting 2-3 times a week. Now I do around 20-30 shops, and there is nothing there, just junk, used H&M t-shirts for same price as New in the actual shop. Many times I see fake footy shirts for around £10-£20, fake Boss tops for £20. Feel sorry for people who will buy that cr.p thinking is genuine. More and more shops not giving receipts when I pay cash, then when I ask for it, they look at me like Im committing a crime, and they have to go through the till again, because the first time was just an imitation pretending that money gone through till.

my local charity shop still sells coats for a fiver and four little figures for a quid -nothing in there is usually over a tenna and they are always so busy high turnover they are there to serve the community .I totally agree with you i used to sell pre owned handbags its hard to find any in BHF or Barnardo's that are under a tenna . I do consider myself lucky that we have some very nice little independent charity shops where they are still there for the people and not profit .. nice video x
I think they are priced high to compensate for all the things the staff take home or put a pound in the till for ! it’s a racket and the staff hide behind the charity , families take their high value items and hand them over to shops in good faith with no paper trail or record and sadly they don’t hit the shop floor , most the staff I see are rough and it’s Christmas every day for them especially if you are the managers , put the simple ones on the till while theft goes on in the back , it goes on all round the country but it’s a charity so you can’t question them can we!

The same happens with the "charity" shops here in Cape Town South Africa. I have witnessed homeless people ask for a slight discount for basic item and get told off by the manager. And the volunteers are there to help themselves or family members. found your channel recently and enjoy the content.

Ricky mate I couldn't of said it better myself. Alot of charity shops now are charging ebay price maybe even higher. And the first thing that comes to your head isn't "I'm not going to make money" it's "blimey the charity's will hardly be getting nothing at this rate" down to greed I reckon. People complain about resellers but don't understand the work you need to put in. That 1 pound item could possibly only sell for 10 quid after an offer. Then you have you have to think about fees. Then you have to think about prepping that item and cleaning it, testing it. Nothing comes for free. I'm glad someone with a platform has said something.
Yeah exactly that mate, and I’m not only speaking about resellers, I’m speaking about the everyday person. This is affecting them as well.
Ridiculous for charity shops to expect eBay prices when they don’t have eBay overheads and they don’t have eBay’s nationwide/worldwide customer base.
I was watching josh galt a Canadian reseller, in the chat someone mentioned they couldn't wait to go to the uk to check the charity shops out, josh told them dont bother as way to expensive compared to the u.s.a, even local ones are trying it on now, i saw some hotter shoes for 10 pounds, the lady was saying well they haven't been worn by the looks, i mentioned the huge crease around the toe area, the fact they were not in style very old fashioned style, and that they get dry rot! they dont look subjectively at all at their stock, just how much can they get for it its not realistic! they may look at ebay prices, but last time i heard arm pit stains were not worth much, least ebay sellers clean their stuff..they dont care
I went into a charity shop because I've just started selling on eBay and even for a skanky dvd they wanted £2 exactly what eBay was charging for it ridiculous pricing point

And dont get be started on heart foundation, their own instore radio station.. "why not head onto our ebay for a better bargain" NO! You've just kept the best DONATED items for yourself not the general public and stuck it on your ebay!!!!!!!!!

You absolutely right, of course, they have the right to sell it, wherever they like, especially eBay.
But the point is they fill the shop with overpriced shit and then while you’re in there, direct you via radio to the eBay shop where they have actually put anything worth selling on 🫠

Agree with everything you’ve said Ricky about how the Charity shops are now working. Free stock, fewer over heads - exempt from many taxes etc - CEOs on fat-cat type salaries. You’ve brought back many memories of how they used to work. The most important thing is to get stock- sort it, list it, sell it, rinse and repeat. You’ve gone back to a shop that is still holding onto stock that was there 6 months ago!!! Their turnover must have crashed. Clearly they can’t run a business like that, and they are businesses, no matter what they call themselves . They have got many employees on huge salaries - except the lovely local volunteers who run their shops - resellers generally spend a fortune in these shops, usually on random shit that most ordinary folk aren’t interested in. I know I do. Random tin of cards, or naff brass birds that a worth a Bob or too !!! LOL keep on keeping on!!🎉❤ kale

I couldn’t agree more, I would also much rather donate to a smaller charity where you can see where the money goes rather than these bigger charities who pay their CEO’s hundreds of thousands of pounds for not a lot. They also get taxpayer money, our money to pay their CEO’s extortionate sums it’s all a business and too many greedy people get into the charity sector, look at BLM & Sir Tom Moore’s charity for example it is sad really. You really should research these things before you decide to donate money or items to a charity so you can decide who deserves it most.
Some charity shops in my area price things up with eBay prices and stuff never sells. Others are far more realistic and would rather have a pound in the till for the charity and move stock quickly.
One example is £3 for videogames no matter the system, another just 5mins walk away are 3 for £1 on all media (games, dvd, cd, vinyl).
I’m seeing Charity shops, closing left right and centre and I’m seeing people not shopping in them anymore. They are supposed to be a bargain experience and nothing is a bargain anymore so they are just going to buy New from the likes of Primark et cetera if they want clothing
Even homeware is cheap in the likes of Primark. It’s a shame really.
People will just buy second had on vinted and get a bargain. Clothes and housewares all reasonable on there. A lot of it probably cheaper on eBay too. That’s what I’ve heard a lot of non resellers saying they are choosing to do now.

I fully agree with everything you said about the corporate charity shops and their greed. And even the independently owned ones I’ve visited take the utter pee in their pricing.
Absolutely nothing charitable and I think it’s absolutely morally wrong.
The fact is they literally get given this stuff for FREE.
You could say the resellers have ruined it, or eBay, or whatever but the fact is the money doesn’t go to the charity it’s filling the pockets of CEOs. I’ve lost friends because of my opinions but I know so many others who share my distaste. I’m actually taking a break from the hunt because I no longer enjoy it.

I volunteer at my local charity shop (the charity is only based in my region) and it’s safe to say if I didn’t I don’t think I would be doing this full time! Feel like in the last few years “commercial” charity shops have truly started taking liberties. Trying to maximise profits when all their stock is FREE and only 2 out of 5 people working in the shop are actually getting paid! It is disgusting and it’s all to line the big wigs pockets.

i think that ignores the supply side of the equation though - even though there is demand, their supply of quality products might be dropping lower and lower. making the products cheaper to buy wont necessarily increase turnover, it could do the opposite as even their half decent stuff which they could get more for would be sold just as cheap and their usual crap doesnt go at all. that being said, im sure the big fat managers get a big fat paycheck. charities should be way more transparent, a poster on a wall of the breakdown of where the funds go would be really good to see @@RickyResells

Agree with you 💯. Charity shops used to be there to benefit the customers coming into the shop. If you are down on your luck and looking for something in their shop, it’s because you can’t afford to buy it new or for the going rate. As you say all the national charities are businesses and a very very small percentage of their income actually goes towards helping someone in need. We have all the usual big charity shops but we have one independent one where local groups or people can apply to for grants, so at least the money stays local and doesn’t find its way to a head office somewhere else. Another thing, while I’m ranting is they all go by eBay prices as gospel where the customer base is worldwide, totally different to Joe Bloggs coming into their little shop in a town. Totally different market.
This so so true Ricky! I like to shop in charity shops for my kids clothes and toys (not a reseller). Bills are going up and things are tight! And of course it’s better for the environment to buy used!

And that’s the thing Vinted is taking a lot of the market share because a lot of items that may have actually gone to donation, or actually getting put on Vinted instead for a couple of quid. They need to catch on and sort it out with what they do have.
The managers in these places cream off all the good stuff for themselves and the rest of the tat goes on the shelves for close to RRP and it’s been that way for years.

Charity shops have certainly changed in the past 5-10 years. Bargains were much easier to find and the cheaper high street brands (primark etc.) were appropriately priced. As you said, people down on their luck could buy a cheap suit for a few quid.
You are correct that Charity shops are a lot more profit driven now. The whole vibe of these spaces has changed enormously. It can quite an unpleasant and dispiriting experience in some of the shops (cough BHF). I think due to the internet/smart phones etc. it is much easier for staff to find the value of higher end branded and rare/unique items. Likewise consumers who 10 years ago wouldn’t have had a clue now know the price of some of this stuff by just searching on their phones in the shops. It does disappoint me that some resellers nowadays only know the price of items and not the value and backstory of stuff. The whole beauty of charity shop bargains was the romance of finding something special and unique. It wasn’t only about how many times profit you could make on eBay for it.
I think technology is to be blamed for it really (and both shops and resellers are guilty of taking advantage). Unfortunately I think in the future most of these bigger charity shops will be online/eBay only and will disappear from the high street.
I hate to be pessimistic but I think the glory days are pretty much over for charity shop bargains. An interesting discussion in the comments anyway.

I went to that aladdins Cave shop a couple of months ago. A proper cs, lovely staff too. I did buy a few bits in there.
A lot of cs are trying to hard nowadays, most are trying to be boutiques. In one last week there was a kenwood for £100, i could only find solds at £50 - 70 🙄

Hi Ricky totally agree with you re high prices. I don’t know why they don’t reduce prices to get stuff sold more quickly and then accept more donations rather than always having signs outside saying No more donations today. I have been busy making lots more labels for Aladdins as I have loads left over from my previous business and I can print them quickly as they said they don’t have tech skills to make then. Lots of pink labels arriving there soon. It will free up their time a bit to get more stuff out rather than hand writing them.

I've just been to a charity shop in a posh area and she is fine charging £5 or under for designer clothes. Every other big name charity shop charging eBay prices.

I don't even go into charity shops anymore, you pay more than ebay!!! I always found happy Staffie was the best. I saw the video on the birds so was deffo a reseller. Think maybe nic & Andrea if I've got their names right 😅 went to my first carboot on Sunday with serious intentions of starting this reselling. Spent £30 with looks like a profit of at least £200 fingers crossed 🤞
The charity shops are doing themselves out of business. I understand they want to make as much profit for the cause. But I used to spend £100's with them. yes I made a profit, but so did they. Now I don't even bother going in unless I am passing. Rarely buy anything in them now.
It’s silly, trying to get maximum value per item when you could just have a set price and get everything turned over and New stuff in. They will make so much more money it’s a proven method.
My experience exactly, used to spend £100 in oxfam bookshop and £100 in Amnesty books, now approx. £10 in each.

I agree with you, especially when they pay "zero" for their stock - If you were getting 10 pairs of shoes coming into your shop for free each week and next week another 10 pairs were to arrive for free also - would you rather put a price of £20 each and maybe sell one pair in the week, or would you list them for £4 each and sell 5 pairs for the same amount? Surely for the charity shops it makes sense to rotate the stock as much as possible! Otherwise you have the situation that you do down my way on the south coast, where countless charity shops "DECLINE" donations! The Charity shops were there to help the community and I feel that the larger organisations are not seeing this and concentrating on graphs and figures and the bottom line - regards - outofhoarder
I was about to comment this too. Their business model of selling at near on eBay prices is entirely incorrect. Charity shops would make more money by far with prices to sell fast, instead of the prices to fit the "if you really want it badly" customer. Coming from the south east coast our charity shops have a two bags only policy... if... they are even taking donations. Charity Shops, drop your prices, sell your stock, take on all the donations, sell all of that too, repeat, and bask in the pound note rays of glory, whilst helping everybody in the process! They might see the light... might...

It’s true it’s a joke. My local ones are still ok but the prices are creeping up and the stock just sits there. I always hear the women who work there talking about how they don’t make any money the shop might close and I wonder why… drop the prices and business will be booming 💥
Can’t deny it though can we, many of them have only increased prices due to the amount of resellers and the 6 figures that are often spoke about. I’m not saying it’s right it’s just an obvious element to why it’s been happening. But yeah man I’m feeling the whole charitable thing being brought back to serve those in need but then even as I’m saying it I’m thinking but then how long before a small minority decide to abuse that. Yes they do, BUT what do they look at?
Selling prices?
Sold prices?
Or sell through rate?
My feeling is that they look at what the selling (or asking) prices are, without looking at what they actually sell for - or even how many were sold over say the last 3 months.
Charity shops have become a joke. Every so often I will try and visit as many as I can in my city and I find it's getting worse. There may be the odd exception but it is very much the exception. Bear in mind that most charities are a racket (profit making, lining the pockets of salaried managers etc)
I spent £10 in a cancer research the other day and the lady asked me if I wanted to round up to and donate £11 . Pardon?? What about the £10 I just spent? Isn’t that going to cancer research?? Madness 😂😂

Its shocking at how expensive they have got now, when you ask why its that price they tell ya thats what it sell for on ebay, its bonkers , our local shop selling second hand vans which are stuff like hell for £20 each

most charity shops price by ebay prices now, not sold comps but average what people are asking, most have their own ebay store, one store (cancer research, not all though) were selling most things at £2 or £3 per item their profits were well up (well things are donated) and a good turnover of stock where others had items for months on end because they were priced to high. We have a local "Hospice" store (in a lot of locations) spent £100's of thousands of pounds regenerating their stores into boutique style so they look posh and charge more, my opinion is the money they spend on tarting up their stores should have gone to the actual Hospice.
its about time the government cracked down on charity shops on stopped giving them cheaper rates and rent they are now a business the stuff i see in some of them should be put in a bin but theirs a £10 price tag on it
Yeah, the government won’t do anything about it because they make a nice little bit of dosh from the whole system too
St Micheal’s does and has done for 30 years provide end of life care - end of life care is now not cheaper than it was when there “used to be a time when you were on your arse” and you could walk into a charity shop… Aladdin’s cave is a great charity shop but they don’t provide the same costs that somewhere like st Michaels StM is an expensive shop but what they do for the local community is invaluable and I’m sure if you are desperate for a coat you could get one from them or go to mayplace where people want to help.
Of course us resellers want to buy things cheap as possible for a bigger return but these charity shops are definitely not charity shop prices anymore. No longer to help the charity or the local community more for the pockets of those in charge
I also do not see a problem with the charities getting their pricing from sites like Ebay, but it would make more sense to price 25-50% under the Ebay solds to tempt the sellers into parting with their cash - gone are the days when place like Oxfam used to have one price for shirts, one price for trousers etc etc
How can they charge EBay prices when EBay has a global audience and millions of potential eyes on it, they sell in some small English town and think they can command the same price!
The thing that gets me the most is their incosistency, I dont understand why the bigger names even bother with their shops anymore since most of them run an eBay store as well.
Exactly that, the stuff that’s on the shopfloor now is stuff that they themselves regard as crap. But they still price it through the roof.
It will be the downfall of eventually nothing like that can last forever, because the consensus of the people is changing
Habits are changing and people are catching on And going elsewhere
Because believe it or not, there are some places like Primark, for example, that do offer clothing and homeware cheaper and new.
Because I’m not just coming at this as a resellers perspective I’m coming from this as an everyday person who would generally love and use charity shops
@@RickyResells 100% agree, charity shops have got me half of my current wardrobe, but over the last year the inconsistency in quality and price has killed the need/want to go anymore. I believe they only still keep the physical stores so they can advertise for donations and drop off points to fuel the other revenue channels
It looks a lot like these places have gone from bad to terrible. I feel sorry for those who got through last winter buying from charity shops to resell & have lost that option this winter. It appears you have one place local you could use. That won't keep bills paid for anyone.
Exactly that, Charity shops and car boot sales are a good place to start out, but you must find a more reliable Avenue if you want to stick at this for a long time.

Yes its getting silly now, the stock just sits there at those prices. They've all been watching the reselling youtube videos and want in on the action! The prices are laughable!
100% on the charity shops, people look at me stupid when i try and tell them what the real deal is with them. Ive haggled in the bad charity shops zero f's given

You're not kidding. I realise they've gotten wise to resellers but they seem to have fogotten the basic concept & principle of charity. They recieve items for nothing and they should be more grateful & sell them at a fair price for everyone. They're making things unaffordable for poorer people who rely on them when they can't afford new things. What makes it worse is a lot of the items they put out have major flaws or missing parts but they don't check them properly & over-price them regardless. There's a shop round my way that doesn't even give refunds under any circumstances! All they'll do is offer an exchange or credit...so if you can't find anything else you want you're stumped. I know for a fact they end up throwing out mountains of stuff. I think they'd sell more & make more money if they started normalising prices again.

I saw a post on Insta - Car manuals used to come with guides on how to adjust the valves, now they come with warnings not to drink the liquid contained inside the battery. Those lawn darts should have remained legal, if you don't have the common sense to stand behind the thrower then maybe you should be thinned from the herd.

100% right about charity shops. And then they moan they have no space for anymore stock. Flog it like a charity shop should. Charity shops aren’t just for people to give items to charity it for people who need charity.Let hope they watch and take note and reduce pricing a bit.

@@RickyResells 100%! I've noticed too that small video game sections of most charity shops are so dry. It's usually just garbage sports games left over that nobody wants.
It’s very satisfying to find something the charity shop workers missed, as you say like rare books or some niche fashion labels, I pick up a few rare DVDs sometimes, I feel like it’s a battle of knowledge with them, if it’s big brand clothing and obvious stuff it’s near impossible to get it cheap enough now.
