As Aussies we might say Whinging Pomie, but to say something derogative about any other race such as Indigenous, Chinese etc, would cause an outcry . The truth is, although we don't like to admit it, we respect the English. They don't run to the Police saying " he called me a bad name ". I had an Uncle who fought at Gallipoli and breifly knew Private John Simpson (Man with a Donkey). He said he was the bravest man he'd ever known. Getting back to the Cricket and whinging - Ricky Ponting, without question the biggest Whinger ever.

Actually most 'English' convicts and 'Irish' convicts (by far the largest groups) were pardoned or gained a 'ticket of leave' a few years after being transported. This was due for example to the lacklustre nature of the court records provided to colonial authorities b) decisions taken by local colonial authorities to reward good work and behaviour. Most of those transported were convicted of typical period 'crimes' against 'property', by far the most severe and largest body of laws in England,

Story I always heard was that when Ian botham was about 19 he came to Melbourne to play club cricket & ended up playing a game against Ian Chappell in melbourne.
There were drinks at the cricketers arms afterward & Ian Chappell apparently got botham so riled up that botham smashed a pint glass & had to be restrained from stabbing Ian, hence the reason Chappell has held such a firm grudge since the incident.

Well it had to be for his cricket, agree, I do not think they give the Knighthood for having a 'mullet' in the 80s, they should though! His back troubled him after 87. Not that he could not play well during that time, he did. They changed Knighthoods in Australia in the mid 1970s,they shifted from 'Imperial' honours to the 'Australian system. So an Order of Australia (OA) once would have been a Knighthood recommended by the Australian government to St.James.

You actually mean 'English' convicts, predominantly from major urban English cities in the late 18th and 19th C! There were actually no 'Australian' convicts as the term 'Australian' was really only used in a 'local' sense from the 1840s and 50s to denote issues like self government and the desire of the majority of Anglo elites to cease the use of convict labour. Convicts were denoted by their origin, in this case, either 'English convict', 'Irish convict', or the catch all 'British' convict.

I would imagine that his charity work must have played a part in this title. At least he has contributed something back to the world of some benefit. I must say though, the Knighthood has been progessively more and more meaningless. The most common form of knighthood is recommended by the government of the day. Between 1979-1987 he was one of the greatest all round cricketers ever. His decline was noticeable after 87. I think he played 5 more years without getting another 5 for, or hundred.

I'm just reading Botham,s autobiography at the moment and he reckons he gave Chappell a dig and sent him flying over a table for bad mouthing the English. Chappell walked to the exit door and started mouthing off again so Botham reckons he chased him down the road but didn't catch him! Don't know if it's true or not but I'd like to hear the truth from someone who was there.

Story I heard many years ago was that Botham was over in Australia as a youngster doing some training- after a disagreement, he knocked Chappell out. Certainly never heard of any broken glass being involved.
On a cricketing note- loved Both as a cricketer, but get the impression he's a bit of a dick as a person.

Mizofan ,are you serious?? Ian Chappell was light years ahead of Ian Botham as a batsman, please dont make absurd comments about a game you obviously know little about.
