RN It was great but not sure if it was the best (in terms of the level design anyway). Banjo Kazooie/Tooie beat it hands down. In general the blocky polygons of the N64 games haven't aged well at all.

That's true for almost every Mario game! I love that Nintendo took such a solid, simple concept and added so much to it.
***** When the Japanese version came out, it didn't have some of the sounds that the U.S and PAL versions do. When Nintendo released a Japanese version that supported the rumble pack, the old sound from V1.0 Japanese version were replaced with the North America/Europe sounds, and the missing sounds were finally put into that Japanese release.
