Totally agree! The Twilight Zone in the Rod Serling era, was amazing. He wrote many of the episodes, but also has great writers as Charles Beaumont or Richard Matheson, and great directors as Richard L. Bare, James Sheldon, Douglas Heyes and John Brahm. One can learn a lot watching the reruns of that magnificent TV show, while one enjoys amazing episodes.
Got a good amount of short scripts. I love writing them. It's like capturing the essence of a 2 hour feature and squeezing it into a 10 minute short. A wonderful challenge every single time. Now all I need is to see at least one produced. What a day that would be!
I love this lady's short films and their channel. I myself am a hardcore horror fan, and for 3 years I have sacrificed so much to build up equipment for filming. So I'm preparing scripts to the stories I have been creating and will hopefully be finding actors soon. It really takes time and patience when you're a one man band. At times I wonder if it's even worth it, but your short films really rebuilds my encouragement and drive. Thank you.

My biggest satisfaction with a short wasn't a famous festival or made a lot of money or won an oscar. it was the fact that famous filmmaker Phil Solomon showed it to his students. I did die many times over when i found out.

What is the biggest success you have had with a short film?
Hey film courage, great content as usual. Actually we shoot acting reels for local actors. My mom and I are filmmakers but we shoot the acting reels like miniature shorts for the actors. We put one up on Facebook and within 4 days it got 975,000 views out of no where. The algorithm caught it months later and we got $300 off in stream ads for it. UA-cam, not so much. Lol
We shoot everything usually in a day. Edit it with in a few snd post up every Wednesday. Been doing it consistently for almost 2 years now

This is obviously a great idea. UA-cam is highly under tapped. As a writer though I wouldn’t have the foggiest notion how I would get my stuff in front of serious minded indie artists.

Yes! I've used the money made from my shorts to basically finance festival runs and/or the next short film.

Curious question: how does financial support come through youtube views if you are not monetized yet? Or did you set up your channel to be monetized before this solid push into production? Been thinking about that a lot myself...
brand sponsorship is an option. Think production placement, partnerships, etc.

And if you are large enough youtube membership to your channel.
And of course brand deals.
For a master of storytelling brand deals can be good content.
It doesn't. Sure, there are ways of making money that don't literally have a subscriber and watchtime limit, but no one's going to sponsor you if no one's watching. And if you only have a few hundred viewers, it'll be hard to get more than a couple Patrons. The good part is that it's actually generally not hard to get views and subscribers if you actually make a high quality, professional short film because even if you don't have a great thumbnail, it's easy to promote something professional. People want to see that. People want to share that.
You need 100k views a day to make livable money on UA-cam. UA-cam ad dollars is a terrible way to make money with short films. You should focus on building your audience rather than making money on UA-cam.
not going to lie; there have been a fair few videos on this channel that i've clicked away from mid-flow because i've found a large amount of various interviewee's opinions-stated-as-fact to be just a touch too dismissive, bordering on outright pejorative & condescending. with that said, hats off to film courage for publishing a video that (genuinely) is titled with PRECISELY the term i've recently been putting into google. couldn't have come at a better time and i'm very grateful for victoria fratz's input here.

This sounds fantastic and I really love that Hollywood is being removed as a gatekeeper. But, how, exactly, are the films being monetized? I assume the number of views brings advertising income, but how else is income being made?

I made a short film a few years back which won the 13-yr-old star awards, such as the Starburst International Film Festival Best Actor Award (not bad considering she was up against adults). I didn't make the film Public on UA-cam until recently. In the few months it has been Public, only a handful of views have been clocked up (the bulk of views came from the actors sharing the Unlisted link a long time ago).
I'd now like it to get more hits. Are there any channels or whatever on UA-cam that I need to register the film with so that people know it exists? Do I need to monetise it to get more hits?
I have written a feature version of the script and would like the short to maybe garner a bit of industry interest.

Actually did a short that was literally a lens test the turned into a festival film.. But I'm pulling it from the festival trail because it off the cost of fees..I literally can buy new gear and pay for UA-cam promos instead of padding the pockets of festival directors. It's hard to get people to festivals now. My other films went to fests and won, and nothing came out of it.. Only got one inquiry which turned out to be a scam from a festival.. short films on UA-cam seem to be getting way more viewership and traction than fests.. I always say do short films without expecting anything That way there's less pressure when you shoot it.. You get a better product

working on a very specific short , professional promo team will promote it world wide due to its synnergy with another medium.. professional indie director /cinematographer will do it access to top equipment and studios. and due to everyone involved are doing it out of love, they volunteer despite their full schedules in the film industry what should cost 200000 usd will cost just 25...28000 usd. how can I find sponsors .national film funds won't work we are scattered. I don't know where to start

Very Inspiring! I wish I knew how the UA-cam algorithm worked. My short films usually do a few hundred views, but one I released in October just blew up to 130K views and took my subscriber count from under 100 to over 1,500. Now I'm thinking I need to turn it into some kind of web series to capitalize on that.

All I want to know is "How smart or how stupid is my audience?".
I grew up with stuff like Batman the Animated Series and Gargoyles, I went to college watching Avatar the last Airbender and Full Metal Alchemist. I loved worlds I can learn, mature themes, but the (Lets face it) immature catharsis of fighting the way out of every problem.
I know a teenage audience would eat up reading or watching this stuff. Harry Potter, Naruto, and My Hero Academia succeed by literally making schools out of learning their worlds and the act of learning their narrative.
But I don't want to make a school story. I have an adventure in mind in world I made..........but I am stuck between making it too simple and making it too complicated.
Yes, engaging characters first........but I AS THE WRITER am already engaged. I have to pay other people to ghost write based on the nonsense I have been obsessing over. I get mixed answers where I need to simplify the story so that the most power character is the solution to all problems (Yeah, tell that to f*cking frodo) or I get so lost in my love for my own work that only my therapist can read the yarn I have been writing and rewriting hoping to get a reader.
I want to make a story ages 12-22 would love. How much information can they take and how do I keep them engaged?
"Smart or stupid" is the wrong approach. Think back to your own childhood, watching the shows you mentioned. Couldn't you tell when entertainment was pandering to your age group? Didn't you instinctively reject content that obviously pulled its punches to protect your young mind, or tried to emulate popular trends?
There's a difference between "kidz tv" and "suitable for all-ages." Just write what you want. Be true to your vision and lean into the elements you love the most. Then step back and ask yourself, "Would I sit down and watch this with my kids/nieces/nephews/friend's children? Are there actions or themes that I would feel uncomfortable watching in their presence?" If the answer is no, then don't worry about the emotional or psychological complexity. Well-written stories find their own audience.
Care more about the craft than the intended age group, because that care, that love, that vibrancy of vision, that artistic precision - *that's* what you innately responded to all those years ago, watching the shows of your youth.
If it wasn't for shorts I would be in a constant chafing condition. Why did I wear jeans all those years.
