- Welcome to the Dr Joe Show Cigar Review Episode 14! Today we review a cigar from one of the most popular cigar brands to ever emerge throughout history - Romeo y Julieta. This pre-revolution brand is adored by cigar smokers from around the world. In 2006, the brand saw a new addition to the standard line, the Romeo y Julieta "Short Churchill." As was expected, this new vitola was received with great anticipation and soon became one of the most popular in the line.
This was for two main reasons. For one, the blend of the new short Churchill was based on that of a time-tested, truly legendary cigar, the Julieta No.2, aka "Churchill." The second reason for its quickly gained popularity was its size. In a world where time is short and smoking is banned almost everywhere, packing the amazing flavor and complexity of the phenomenal blend of the original 7" cigar into a 4.9" robusto turned out to be a genius idea!
The original Churchill, a 7" x 47mm cigar, was named for one of it's greatest admirers, Sir Winston Churchill, the former Prime Minister of England during WWII. After the size was dubbed, "Churchill," all cigars of that size were also referrred to by the same name. This is perhaps one of the greatest stories of how a cigar got it's name. Today, the Churchill is one of the most repeated sizes from brand to brand, and while different brands give different names to their vitolas, most people still refer to a cigar that size using the Churchill name. It's just one of those things that stuck and cannot be undone.
As a brand, Romeo y Julieta was established in 1875 by Inocencio Alvarez and Manin Garcia and was named after the famous tradgedy by William Shakespear, of course. In 1903, the brand was acquired by Jose "Pepin" Rodriguez Fernandez, for whom the brand is more commonly associated with. Using his company, Rodriguez Arguelles y Cia, Pepin brought the brand to the world and attracted the attention of some of the most rich and influential people of the time by means of his masterful promotional skills. Perhaps one of his most well known "tools of attraction," was the way he offered cigars custom crafted and personalized to suit the individual smoker.
He offered, to those who desired (and could afford) such things, custom made bands as well as custom shapes, creating cigars that were tailored specifically to the individuals requirements. At the height of this era, Romeo y Julieta had over 1,000 unique vitolas, especially piramide and figurado shapes, and over 2,000 different personalized bands! To this day, collectors of old Cuban cigar bands often attribute any band of unknown origin with a name and picture but no brand name to the Romeo y Julieta company.
