The Allotment in July + Some Big News

- It's summer in the allotment and in the thick of the growing year. There are some tasks I need to do today including harvesting potatoes from one bed and then planting it up with cauliflower plants I've been growing at home. I also plant out leek seedlings, harvest elephant garlic, and tell you about my plans for the future of the allotment garden.

I think your decision to let the allotment go is a wise one. You have quite a large area to garden at home and as a fellow gardener I know how much time it takes to just maintain an established garden. You will be maintaining what you have established plus starting and then maintaining all the new projects/infrastructure you have been planning and dreaming about. If you keep the allotment you will only fret about not spending enough time there and probably feeling guilty. Not to mention time and gas driving to and from. Bless it, move on, and let it go so someone else can reap its benefits. Just my opinion, I’m sure you will make the best decision for yourself. Blessings, TeresaSue P.S. I really enjoy your videos.

been watching your channel for years and always thought of you as a wonder woman...when you got the new house with all that space, i just figured you'd bring it all together with the gardens, the bees and possibly a small pond...yours and josh's efforts have created an oasis for you (and your adoring fans) to enjoy...letting the allotment go to the next 'super gardener' is a given...and i love the new 'cat's eye' glasses...did maggie pick them out?
It's always hard to say goodbye. But when it's time, you know it's time. In my opinion, you're on the right path. You have a wonderful new yard in your new home, and another wonderful gardener, I'm sure will be ecstatic to farm your allotment. Best of luck!
The home garden is growing, developing, and coming along beautifully! I think it would be wise to focus all your attention there, and it will release your commitment to the responsibility of the allotment so that your home garden can flourish even more!

Passing the allotment back to the association will no doubt be sad! But think about the growing opportunities you will be opening up for someone else. You are fortunate to have all the land you need for gardening at home. Not everyone is an fortunate to have as much space in their back yard, or apartment for that matter. I know you're going to miss the allotment, but I think it's wise of you to know when it's time to move on and focus on your home garden instead. There's only so much work you can handle and so many hours in the day! It makes total sense to me to spend your time and energy in the garden right outside your door. Can't wait to follow along on your gardening journey!
I waved goodbye to my community allotment garden plot a year and a half ago, but began my own home garden, here in our new country, Cyprus. I miss my allotment friends a lot, but they still keep in contact with me and are happy to still give me advice. But I am learning a lot about my new climate, the fruit and veg that can grow here (not always successful, but it is a learning process,) gardening seasonally and just recently seed saving! All the best going forward, Tanya! Growing doesn’t always mean expanding outwards, but sometimes developing inwards.
Your allotment updates are a joy to see. I am also a gardener and UA-cam creator. I know gardening is a lot of work and I really appreciate you take the extra time to update and share with us. I still have so much to learn about growing and I appreciate all of your tips,tricks and advice that you share! Lets learn as we grow together.

I used to have an allotment that was 15 minutes drive away, just to and from that’s half an hour, not to mention time there. Picking crop. Even a quick trip to pick stuff for dinner ended up an hour or more. I now have my own large garden which is a kitchen garden and life is so much easier! Even the weeding jobs isn’t a chore you just pop out with your coffee in the morning for 5 minutes! Makes total sense!
I think you will need to bare root everything to prevent taking the flatworm. If you have the space at home it will be better than dividing your attention

I totally know what you mean, I'm exactly in the same situation! Need to leave the old alotment, but having lots of space in the new home garden. And to be honest I've already made many potted plants like black currant etc. So lets move on totally and keep the focus on our new success: the new home in total =) thanks for all the great videos you're sharing! When I started watching the video I thought you're mad giving up the allotment in the current climate (looming food shortages etc) but seeing the size of your home garden I get why you're doing it. It's going to be a full time job on its own and you have plenty of space for everything.
I used to juggle my home garden with my now ex boyfriend's place (better soil at his) and found it too much - and that was only two miles down the road. I think you've made a right decision and I'm looking forward to seeing how your home garden develops.
The end of a era… but the new one has already begun. I love your new place, and I am enjoying seeing its transformation. You have left your mark on the allotment, and years from now, the next tenants will likely still say, “this once was Tanya Anderson’s, and I am honored to have the opportunity to garden on it.” Now go do something wonderful on your own piece of land! Always nice to see your progress in the home garden. If you move any plants make sure they are bear root… you can soak and wash the roots in the autumn.
I have three allotment plots, and with my current situation, it's too much to do! I'm contemplating giving one up, it's heartbreaking, but I think there will be so much more joy to be had when I'm not constantly pushed for time! You may find that too, leaving your allotment. ❤️
Absolutely the best decision, you are only one person afterall. This will give you time to actually enjoy your home and garden without feeling pulled to be elsewhere.
New to your channel. Playing devil's advocate, possible reasons to keep the allotment: a) milder climate, better soil or better orientation to the sun for tender plants, b) compelling bond with allotment members, c) possibility of a move to another home in the not too distant future. For instance, if your home location has a history of pesticide use or other toxic exposure, you might want to keep the allotment and just grow flowers by your home. If none of those apply, it is more efficient and convenient to shift all your effort and energy to the home garden. PS: I would leave the plants behind and thoroughly clean tools and shoes you've used at the allotment so as not to risk importing the NZ flatworm (or its eggs) to your home garden.

I have really enjoyed the time at the allotment that you have shared with us. I understand having to move on. No one can successfully be spread out. Better served to direct your energy towards developing your home garden. The only way I can see to keep the allotment would be to transition the crops to very low maintenance varieties but that would mean there is enough rain to water them so you don’t have to come over regularly. I think letting someone else have it would be better and generous since you no longer really need it.
I agree, you should let go of your allotment. Maybe you can make additional raised beds and plant the same veggies and flowers you had at your allotment in your home acreages.
Of course focus on the home garden! I’m sure when you first started at allotment you didn’t have space for a big home garden! Now you do! Move on and thrive 💙💙💙💙💙
Don’t feel bad about your allotment. You’re only one person,and can do only so much. You’re giving someone else the chance to learn and grow their own veg.
I have had different bits of allotments and land but decided that having land with your house is the best. The only place I could afford was Southern Ireland. I left all my lovely plants and bees for someone else to enjoy and now able to plan properly. Well done you.
I think it's a sound plan and great idea to concentrate on your home garden. You've got plenty of space to expand into whatever area you want AND can keep a close watch on what is happening with each element. It just makes sense we're all more likely to upkeep a garden area near or at our homes.

Hi Tanya! The decision is wise. I would suggest that you transfer the plants bare rooted to your home garden. It’s more work, but you get the mature plants in your home garden! Take care!

I totally understand your decision to focus on your home garden. I don’t know how you do it with both of them, it is so much work! Definitely take cuttings instead of transplants and have boots that are exclusive for the allotment and don’t take them anywhere else. Those worms sound like a nightmare. Keep up your great work!

I had a plot in a community garden very close to my home, but I expanded my garden at home and didn't have enough time for both. I also had to let the community garden go. Hard choose, but I don't regret it.
Do what you have to do. Someone else will grow to love your allotment. Your home garden is wonderful and you have lots of projects and work planned for it. Hugs
Great decision to hand back your allotment. So easy to overcommit and burn out. Knowing your limits is a form of self care. ❤ And if you can grow enough food at your home, great to hand that plot over to another family in this time of looking food shortages.
I can understand why its been a tough decision to make. You've put so much hard work and love into the allotment and it's such an incredibly beautiful place. I do think it's the right decision though. Your home garden is amazing and it's been a joy watching you develop it. I don't know if your site has a waiting list like ours does here in Yorkshire (2 years and counting for me) but I'm sure your plot will make it's new tenants very happy.
Of course it is the right decision for so many reasons. More room isn't better! You have lots of great home garden space so the allotment just becomes a guilt machine. Here's a thought - bequeath the allotment to a local school offering a set number of mentoring hours.
I cut an 'All The Year Round' cauliflower a few days ago and made cauliflower cheese with it - the slugs have done a fair amount of damage to the crop though, probably because I just didn't keep my eye on it. I have some more 'Cendis F1' winter cropping cauliflowers growing now (and I also have to use netting because of pigeons). It sounds like you might have ended up just 'doubling up' on the amount of work between the large fruit and vegetable garden you now have at your home and your allotment - sometimes you can just take on too much and of course you have to know when it's right to let something go.
How about a school nearby taking it on. I agree your home garden is large and will keep you very busy. Thank you for the knowledge you share.
Tanya, give yourself a break! You grow plenty of veggies and flowers in your home garden--all that you need and can use. The allotment is "prime real estate", so let someone else enjoy the work and the subsequent harvest.

For the carrots and other seeds y use burlap instead of wood planks. It protects the seeds from the pests and keeps the soil moist.
I'm fairly certain that it would lead to the same result. Slugs LOVE a cozy and moist place to hang out :)
Sad to hear but honestly when you bought the house I knew it was enevitable with how big the land is. I also think start completely fresh with plants there is no way I would risk introducing the pest at home. I see it as too much of a risk in your potentially forever plots
Realistically you have made a wise decision. Your new home garden is large I believe adequate for growing all your food having your wonderful poly and house an additional bonus. You also are writing and other work projects there is only so many hours in a day and you need to have time to relax and enjoy other pursuits in your home life. I wish you only the best but hope your channel will continue along.

I'd keep it and give someone the chance to learn more, upkeep it and harvest with or for you , fir the education, the space to grow and your knowledge and help with seedlings and food. It would be a wonderful opportunity and a place and project for when you want to shoot video but because someones taking care of it...you can come as it's convenient but have your focus mostly on building your new gardens. Also giving you extra access to food while building. To have a well kept space to grow and ready for planting would be a dream...but having established crops etc just would be an amazing opportunity!!

You can only do so much, Tanya. Trying to garden in two places when you have the room at home to do it all is too time consuming. Letting the allotment go is a wise decision….and there may be people waiting who don’t have the space to grow their food. Since you have to leave the perennial plants it’s a wonderful gift to whoever will rent it next. Can you root some of the tender stems of the raspberries? Perhaps it would work. I would try in water and with rooting hormones. Nothing to lose. Or perhaps you could wash the roots of the new plants that pop up to make sure you don’t get any of those nasty worms. I don’t think I would risk that, but perhaps the agriculture department could give you some advise. Perhaps there is a solution that would kill them that wouldn’t hurt the roots. I’m sure you will be much happier having it all in your backyard. It will become a burden and a dreaded chore and gardening should never be a dreaded chore. 😊💖🦋🕊
Not much governmental help in tackling the NZ flatworm issue. Unfortunately, there's not much that can kill them, and the methods that do involve picking them off by hand. Even then, you'll never be rid of them. When the season turns cooler, and the plants go dormant, I'll be doing a lot more with moving plants. Many can be dug up then and cleaned of all soil then replanted. Thank goodness for that :)

You should do well with all year round cauliflower, I've just eaten one of mine for dinner. They produced ok for me. 👍
I always feel so guilty when you mention the (NZ) flat worm being from New Zealand! I had never heard of it until you mentioned it. Great idea to focus on home as it’s a large garden.

With the NZ flatworm, I am very concerned about you transplanting allotment plants to your home gardens. Is there an option for you to get some compensation for turning over a fully, or nearly fully, planted allotment to the next gardener.
Don't worry...I'm more aware of the issue than the average person and wouldn't risk bringing them home :)

Hello...i have question: who owns the property that allotments are on? Do you pay rent on it? Do you own your home property? I apologize for the ignorance I just don't get it..thank you
We own our home but the allotment land is owned by a local farmer. We, as an allotment association, rent the land from him. We then sublet plots to individuals wanting to grow a veg patch. Here's more about how allotments work: ua-cam.com/video/z8_GER8n8qE/v-deo.html
is it possible to keep the allotment, but grow nothing new on it? only keep those long-standing perennials? that way you'd get the harvest from them, plus maintain the community, & have much less work than usual. also, the beds that would go empty perhaps could be given to a friend to use.
Some of the perennials I'll be able to take in different ways -- cuttings and as bareroot plants in winter. I just honestly can't see myself having time to drive to the allotment each week for the ones left, though. Best to pass the plot on for someone else to use, I think :)

I have the same issues with my tiny carrots being eaten by slugs, I am trying again for the 4th time.
Put beer in a shallow dish & the slugs will go for the beer.

I've never used it to be honest. I've used a material called fish, bone, and blood before -- long time ago -- but it's a bit different from what I think you mean.

I can't sublet it to to someone else and rent prices are set. I'm pretty settled with my decision now though...letting it go will be best :)

I think that you should concentrate on your home garden. No commuting, no rent and you have the space. As for your plants, I should propagate and leave the parent plants there. It's much safer than taking risks by moving actual plants. You need your worms at home.
