Can you add a caveat for those who want to use the bikes : check the brakes and give the wheel a spin before you take a bike as sometimes they’re not in great working order. It’s better with the new system but you can still run into bad ones. Also: if the seat is facing backwards that means it doesn’t work well
If you do get a bad one - is there anything stopping you from just immediately returning it and getting a different one? Like are there time limits between uses? I probably should’ve paid better attention to Jay’s instructions 😁
On the new system, not sure... on the old system you either had to put it back right away (like with 15 seconds) or you had to wait 5 minutes before you could take another one.
Velib' is from far the best way to bike in the city. You can leave it in any station then have a walk or anything else further. And then even if you went far away by feet, you don't need to come back to pick up your bike because you can get an other one anywhere, there are stations everywhere. Plus, it's cheap price and... you don't need to care someone steal it :-)
Hi Jay! Question - if you pay 5 Euro and rent a bike for a day does that mean you can drop off the bike somewhere in two hours and get another one later with the same code until the 24 hour period? Or is it just one time use?
Hello Jay. Thank you very much for the video. It's so helpful. I shared it with my american family who are coming to Paris to stay 6 months. I am sure they will love ride everywhere in vélib.
You are a life saver 😊😊 I am in Paris for the summer and have been anxious on going out to ride the bikes because I don’t know how to but you explained it so perfectly thank you
If you need additional art for the Office, or a great place to film, the outSunday Artist Market (Line 6, Edgar Quinet) is an all to often overlooked gem in Paris. Usually there are up to 100 Art Guild Members showing their creations, each with their own outdoor space. These are not the "artists" one finds catering to tourists, but artists who have real skills and abilities. Prices range from a few Euros up to an occasional piece priced over a thousand.
David Shearer where I always stay (first stayed there with my parents 25 yrs ago and the memory stuck) as an adult I am a frequent visitor if I could live anywhere it would be that neighbourhood
I'm glad you got them working; a bike rental is part of my plan for my visit and it was nice to see a video that didn't skip the "why is this so hard?" part at the beginning BEFORE you get on the thing and, like your friend said, want to stay on it forever. I lived in the greater Philly area for close to 20 years, and just visited overnight on an Amtrak layover; I stayed in Old City, which was always touristy and still is, but the former gritty local color has been sanded off and much of it has been repurposed for hipsters (a pizza place called Big A$$ Slices, etc). But I was amazed to see, on Market Street near the entrance to Penn's Landing (the waterfront park on the Delaware River) a rack of about 30 velibs ready for rental. So maybe, at least in some touristy destinations, the US is catching up to Europe. Cheers from Vermont!
Thanks! I walk by the racks of bikes, figuring it worked somewhat like it did. I’m sure I would struggle! I guess I’d choose a bike way before a lime! Lol
I was cracking up and saying, “That’s what she said” a few times in this video. 🤣 I am 12. But it sounded like Jennica was cracking up, too, so I’m in good company, eh? 😄 I’m glad Velib is up and running again. While not perfect, it is a super great idea for a city like Paris! And I didn’t think about the positioning of stop lights in Paris until you mentioned it and then thought, “By golly, that’s it!” I always realized there was something different about stoplights there but couldn’t put my finger on it! Mystery solved! 👍🏼✌🏼
I left Paris yesterday, and I can't recommend veils enough. Totally changed the trip to pickup and drop bikes everywhere. 5 euro per bike for 24 hours usage.
@@markcrayton8151 you just keep using it until you are done and dock it. It's easier unless you have a lock for the bike. The docks are everywhere and loaded with bikes. Ride to destination, dock the bike. Grab another when you leave.
It took us a good 20 minutes to figure it out back in May but was worth the hassle. Had a great ride along the river and so cheap compared to bike rentals in the States. It just takes some trial and error. The system in Nice proved impossible to figure out. Velib is much better.
Hi Jay, was searching for how to do this before a friend arrives and came across your vid. Little did I know that you partially filmed our abode as well as Lucy's apparent close call (and my child). Love your videos. Want to buy one of your bags! See you soon, and thanks for all you do!
Very helpful, thank you for this video! We’ll be visiting next spring and hope to use Vélib! The last time we were there and used it was in 2014 and you had a certain amount of time to get to the next station or it changed you extra. I’m guessing that’s not the case anymore? It all looks so different but I guess it’s been 6 years. Also, we plan to get a weeklong Navigo Découverte when we’re there, will we be able to add Vélib to it?
Really helpful video! I love that you admit to your annoyance and resistance to figuring this out, oh, maybe five times! This greatly encouraged me to stick with you, because I had a hard time with the old system, and I have no patience with geeks who make really complicated French gimmickry look obvious and simple. Interesting, too, that one of you simply could not get it to work. So, we are honestly warned. I learned some very useful pointers from this report, including a few cyclist rules of the road that are worth noting, and thanks to you, I will definitely download the app before I get to Paris. Though, it might not work anyway. In which case, I'll check out Bike About Tours. Well done.
"I know what you're thinking. " bahahaha. What a beautiful day. I love your city. Cheers! 😎🍻 Very useful velib tutorial 🚴♂️ Even the wiggle stop 😉 Speedo action too, ooo la la!!
Dude! We tried to do this (sign up for an acct.) at a metro station and the guy told us it was for Paris residents only. 😭 In the end we ended up using Jump bikes and that was 👍🏾✨. Thanks for making this video.
Hi Jay, Great video, as always. Cracked me up that most of the humor comments below were from girls. You have a GREAT following. Missing Paris, everyday ! ! ! !!
Gah, glad I’m not the only immature mind! A good ole “that’s what she said” never gets old. 😂 Do you know if Bike About does any special tours around Christmas to show the lights, markets, etc?
There's a lot of "that's what she said" moments when Jennica's around 😂 As for special Christmas tours, not in group format but I bet they'd do private ones for sure.
Good video! Wish I was going to Paris sometime soon but not in the immediate future. Actually heading to Rome, Croatia, Slovenia next month! You need to treat Kate to a bike ride, she was so disappointed. ☹️
Hi Jay, a great informative vlog as normal. I have often thought about hiring a bike but sometimes when your in a new place walking often prevails. Thanks for the insight into how to get set up and we would definitely think about doing something like that on our next trip.

@m3ganmcguir3 - Yeah, you're absolutly right, this is very important to know before getting one ;-)
@@karwai2673 Very sound advice - I suppose if you take one off the stand and its faulty you simply stash it back and select a better one.
Definitely good advice to throw in there

Thank you so much for the update on Velib Jay. I have never been brave enough to try one out but I feel more confident now.
I'm glad it was helpful! =D
Thank you, Jay. Great vid as usual. Mimi and I both enjoyed very much meeting with you yesterday. Hope to catch up with you again in the future
Thanks again for taking the time to say hi!
Watching your vlog from Paris today! Perfect for killing time at De Gaulle

I’m French and from Paris and I never figured out how this works so I’m looking your video to understand 😂
haha - it was confusing for us too
I love it that was perfect. I plan to use bike about and a little bit of Velib when I am there.
Here's hoping my pain is your gain 😂😂😂

I second that the art market is great. Great crêperies in the area!
Laura Brennan I deliberately left them out. They’ve become so crowded as word spreads.
