Unusual ending for what has become a jazz standard. While he wasn't usually an accompanist, this shows how much he could excel at anything on the piano just by listening.

      Very interesting observation.
I am a busy working pianist.
The orchestration was written with that ending. I’m not sure if I liked it but there was no improvisation there.
True he wasn’t an accompanist but he certainly did a fine job on this again following the orchestration as written. I am an accompanist and can tell you the key ingredient in that roll is to embellish not upstage the performers.
The “spotlight “ should always remain on the entertainer out front.
I find that roll to be very gratifying

My father is 90 and still listens to this genre of music and I grew up with it. Moon River is my all-time favorite song, so it was so enjoyed by this daughter who is watching over her sick dad. He perked right up. Thank you, I needed this tonight.

A treat for Andy Williams to get to sing Misty with the composer. Erroll Garner composed at least 200 original pieces, some of which are still coming to light even now. Others I love are...Play, Piano, Play; Frantonality; Dreamstreet; The Loving Touch a.k.a Blue Ecstasy: Dreamy: Mood Island: Nightwind: No More Shadows: Theme from a New Kind of Love; Eldorado; Mambo Carmel: Wild Music; and many more. I try to play quite a few of these, basic by ear versions and nothing like as complex as the masterful Erroll's original. I am glad that Andy Williams had a good long life, but it is so sad that Erroll died aged just 55, heart attack following complications arising from emphysema (he was a heavy smoker).

The priest of my village used to play secretly errol garner to the kids by ear. 30 years later I became a fan without knowing of this music which real echoes into me.

A rare video with two extreme musical talents that folks over "a certain age" remember so well. Andy Williams 1927-2012 / Erroll Garner 1921-1977.

    Look at me, I'm as helpless as a kitten up a tree;
And I feel like I'm clingin' to a cloud,
    I can' t understand
I get misty, just holding your hand.
    Walk my way,
And a thousand violins begin to play,
Or it might be the sound of your hello,
    That music I hear,
I get misty, whenever you're near.
Can't you see that you're leading me on?
And it's just what I want you to do,
Don't you notice how hopelessly I'm lost
    That's why I'm following you.
    On my own,
When I wander through this wonderland alone,
Never knowing my right foot from my left
    My hat from my glove
I'm too misty, and too much in love.
    I'M JUST too misty,
    And too much
    In love...

I am a busy working pianist.
I think it is obvious that I just loved Andy’s incredible skill.
As a pianist who currently is in demand working for singers EG taught me years ago that the accompanying pianist fills out the sound without getting in the way.
Many pianists with tremendous skills do not understand this.. I try my best to enhance not upstage the singer
Thank you for your musical awareness!

I was a huge Andy Williams fan all of my life~and took exception to you referring to him as "Williams" I'm kind of touchy and sensitive as to where this man is concerned. But I also really appreciate what you've said. Andy did have a good feeling for jazz. Thanks for your insightful comment.

I love it when he shows his incredible range. I also love what he does on " The Way You Look Tonight" and "Summertime" Enjoy listening to him on Spotify. Thanks for sharing about that.

Although there are many fine renditions of this song, this has the treat of Erroll Garner himself accompanying at the piano. Andy Williams is well suited for this song, with smooth and effortless vocal production. He begins gently. At the middle section of 1:17 he sings with a pleasant sounding full-bodied tone, but without any strain. At 2:19 he reaches the climax on a high G#, and holds it while getting softer. He returns to it at 2:28, and descends and ends on the 9th of the final 9th chord.

    • @richardconnolly1232

Andy had tremendous control and intonation.
As you can see from my post I loved and continue to love listening to him. As a busy working pianist I’ve worked with many vocalists male and female but Andy Williams always floors me and most of my musician friends.
Luckily I saw him many times while I was working casinos and can tell you he was consistently magical. His live performances always exceeded his studio stuff but that is not uncommon for the greats.
Bennett, Mathis, Damone, Steve Lawrence and a few others “did it” for me but Andy’s ability always knocks me out.
Fearless in his approach and always in tune
The greats are pretty much gone but we have recordings
      Thanks for your comment
