The part about the owner getting tense is so valuable. When you aren’t confident in your ability, that makes it so much worse. Finally realised this. I pass a dog who is always off leash every day on my morning walks. It’s near the owner, but always bounces two steps forward and barks. The owner goes, blah, blah, blah, to the dog, but never corrects the dog. My dog would get reactive and I would get uptight just in anticipation. So I finally worked out the owner isn’t going to do anything and started preparing my dog with me staying calm, not changing anything, say leave it and keep moving. That dog still bounces forward, but my dog keeps walking…..finally! Love how you just correct, shake it off and move on with confidence. We walk on a path around a river before work and it’s such a great walk, I’m not prepared to go elsewhere. It is also a tight space at times, but I’ve learned to do it watching you over and over and……..

I like to explain it like this...
All dogs follow their owners around the house like they are Gods. They need to act like it. Don't hope they get it. Demand it like the God you are to them. [From a loving place, of course.]

I would like to see your process in a more narrow environment. I use a lot of similar methods with my training. However, I notice many of my clients dogs struggle when presented with a narrow and moving situation like a dog passing by on a sidewalk. I usually use a prong in those situations and then fade it out after I’ve established zero reaction when passing dogs on the sidewalk. I do that because I need a clear correction that doesn’t require my dog going to the end of a four foot lead (cause there isn’t enough room on a small sidewalk). I’d love to see how you transition a dog like this in a tight urban environment since that is where a lot of reactive dogs live.

Ava seems to be becoming a velcro dog, where they stick very closely to the handler. That often happens with rescues. She looks to you for comfort and protection, which is part of the reason I think she doesn't freak out when she is nervous as much.

    I am stunned!
I knew you would be able to fix the leash reactivity with dogs - it's what you do! And I always believed it was from fear or insecurity, not aggression. She really is a lover not a fighter. Never saw any aggression toward another dog or a human, never had any fear that she would hurt me or someone else.
But - her cat freakouts in this neighborhood FULL of feral cats felt different and worried me. That cat running past & your ability to get her back with one quick correction is everything.
She is such a good girl and I always felt like she wanted to do the right thing, I just wasn't able to convey it to her. Being able to relax a bit about what is expected will make her life so much better ❤️❤️❤️

Way to go Ava! My biggest fear happened at 530 am in the dark this morning. A young large Cane Corso came running out from a yard over to check out my hugely reactive Island street Bully/Potcake dog. I screamed at it to get away, but it kept circling back and I kept behaving like an maniacal insane person while screaming for the owner to get his dog. I think my dog was so shocked at me that she forgot to react. The Owner came out and 5 minutes later she saw a familiar dog being walked and then reacted . Sheesh

Follow up: training with friends dog went amazingly well. Took us about 7-8 minutes to work in the house and exit out the door and he was then on my page. 👍 Went outside and did several stops with leash corrections and then we walked loose leash and he continued to check in with me. We took video and sent to the owner who was amazed. Will train again next week. I sent her to Joel’s page. Thx again Joel for sharing your knowledge so we can help not only our dogs but others as well. ❤️

Your method is so above anything I have ever seen for effectiveness. I find that the deeper the j in the loose leash the more effective the correction, and the bracing self, bending low enough so the correction is down and to the side is a really important step. I learned training on a choke chain years ago. The trouble was if the dog pulled then the ability to correct was gone, leaving just a choked neck and stubborn dog who didn't care. I never dreamed I could teach with a regular collar and leash. I understand the pop correction because of how a choke chain tightens and releases in micro seconds if used right. This method is way better. I am very glad I found your channel. You saved us. The speed of the dog learning is light speed compared to my experience with any other method, and it's so gentle, leaving a happy dog and owner. THANK YOU

If it wasn't for her steelblue eyes I would not believe my eyes. So much progress. When my dog freaks. out on the leash, it always happens when there is not enough room to manouvre, like a narrow passing place and the other dog is not kept on the outside. I do get frustrated when he goes beserk like Ava on the owners video even if I am normally very patient. I still have to train myself more in correcting him sooner and shorter en immediately loosen the leash. You make it look sooo easy.

My dog can walk on a loose leash and can pass dogs behind fences without reacting at all. Will even sit down and start chewing on something in front of a barking dog who is behind a fence. But he can't deal with about 50% of the dogs we pass on my city streets - he simply flies off the handle (on the gentle leader so doesn't go very far). There is definite progress, thanks to Joel, but wow, what an insane experience to have this kind of dog after decades of never having this kind of highly reactive animal.

I've been trying this type of thing already, but in this video I think the standout point that I had not learned/heard before was "hit the wall, pop/correct and immediately drop to a loose leash. do not keep tension on the leash." Here in the vid, Ava jumped back and was fine. My dog goes right back into action, but this may be because of the leash tension after the initial freak out / correction (or it might be he's stubborn). But something new to think on and try.

New subscriber here. I've taught my reactive boxer loose leash walking and started to use a gentle leader. Around people, he's getting better. Around dogs, doesn't feel like it. Around people and dogs, even less. I'm taking it slow and trying to incorporate his best motivators, but we're at a point where I'm concerned that he's going to associate the correction on the gentle leader with whatever he lunges at because he just rages whenever he hits the end of the leash. In those moments, I get in front of him, apply leash pressure upwards and walk into him until we're at a safe distance and he sits. Any advice or opinions on what I'm doing? Your videos have been a huge help thus far.

I have a boxer that can act very much the same as you described. After rewatching Ava’s first video I think it may be my body language and not so much my dog. I’ll let you know if Georgia ( my boxer) improves.

I think he mentioned in his last walking video with Ava that he’ll do that upward pressure while the dog is freaking out, and then as soon as they calm down, loosen the leash again. And again then if they freak out, tighten it, then loosen it as soon as they calm.
Ive seen improvement doing this with my dog.

The main problem with owners usually, is thatthey get ready with a tight leash. They must get rid of this behaviour, dogs shouldn't notice that they noticed something and 'got ready'. Need to behave normally as usual as if nothing would be there.

Hi! A big fan of your channel here. I’ve tried to use the gentle leader and using your stop / turnaround method when my dog pulls on walks, but he still pulls to the point that the gentle leader has cut into my dog’s face and leaving a mark… is there anything else that can be done here pls? Your help very much appreciated!

Hi Joel, working on loose leash walking with a strong puller, in front walker, high prey drive with rats and squirrels dog. He walks next to me with loose leash about 40-50% of the time, but lunges for rats and barely checks in. When he looks at me I mark with a treat and correct when he leaves me. It seems like, tho, he just doesn’t care about the corrections and just completely ignores me, even on a gentle leader. How do I get him to reliably check in and pay attention to me, and not just do his own thing?

I wish I could figure out where I am going wrong. My 18 month doberman has excellent obedience training but her reactivity is very bad. She walks on a leash good but when she sees anything (car, dog, person) she Springs at it just like ava Except she keeps going after my least correction. once she gets excited she insists on walking in front of me and even after I give her little pops I can’t seem to ever get her attention back on me. Trying hard but struggling.

I feel bad that Ava flies like that when she hits the end of the leash but ultimately she made that choice. It was her own fault. And so she'd have to learn from that.

When i',m starting walking my dog, he needs to go potty. There is somehow a frenzy behavior there, and i don't know if it's OK to start correct him immediatelly, or let him mark some spots to relief his needs first.

My dog has leash reactivity. I have been using your videos with much success. However, I have one problem. How should I deal with my dog when another dog is charging his invisible fence line? We have great walks until we meet other dogs that are not under control or supervised by the owners. Your help would be much appreciated.

Just keep up your obedience. As you advance the dog learns to ignore it. But also be empathetic and understanding that they don't have to be perfect when the other dog is being a jerk. They just can't also be completely out of control
