I was born in Dayton at WPAFB in 1956. I loved living around that area. We went shopping at Rikes in downtown Dayton. I loved it. But when dad retired we moved away to Southern Ohio, to a very rural area with not many people around. Totally different.
I was born at the base in '68. My dad was stationed here and met my mom here. They ended up staying here since her parents were alive and his passed before they got married. I still miss Rike's.
Born and raised Dayton, Ohio and still reside here. I'm very proud to be from here and am a staunch historian of the Gem City. Quite frankly sir you have no idea what you are talking about.
Wow. I was just looking through old pictures of Dayton. Local preservationists were furious about the wanton destruction of their old buildings about 10 years ago. I grew up in Columbus and often went with my dad to Dayton on business. It was a mystical place compared to modern, boring Columbus.
It’s currently still infuriating. Even more scary is the rash of “fires” that pop up around these neighborhoods, on my street, there’s been 5 or 6 business fires within the past couple years
Wow! I'd like to learn more about this subject. I live in Dayton and took a lot of what I've seen for granted. There is some beautiful architecture that I've often have wondered about. Very interesting!!
I think those who who couldn’t be manipulated went into insane asylums and the rest was scared of loosing their families kept quiet. Education wasn’t priority then. My grandfather went as far as the 7th grade and got pulled out to work in the coal mines at 11 years old. These structures are older than the tell us. Fantastic video! Thanks!
Little known is that there are canals in Ohio - arrived in Dayton in 1829. The Miami and Erie Canal is 274 miles long - ran from Cincinnati to Toledo. Indiana too has canals, one, the Wabash and Erie Canal is 468 miles long - the longest canal in North America. (neither canals mentioned have anything to do with The Erie Canal in NY) Adding up just the canal systems in Ohio, Indiana and New York State we have over 1000 miles of canals, all built before 1840. ( probably WAY before 1840 )
Lake Laurami was created to supply the canal system. There is still part of the canal in Piqua that leads to a lake. I've kayaked abd fished that part. It is really neat.
My husband is a brick and stone Mason. His work is like an art to him. We built a new home 15 yrs ago. It's all brick and we have a large porch on the back and front. He built the arches. On the front entrance He put stone on it with the arch. It's beautiful. Like the Tuscany look.
