Last month, I had an amazing time walking for mental health awareness in Abuja, Nigeria.
It was so exciting to see everyone come out for this cause. We need to have more conversations on mental health as every human being has a mental health. We also need to have more discussions such as these ways to improve the quality and delivery of mental health care services in Nigeria.
One of our major goals for this awareness walk is to advocate for the signing into law of the National Mental Health Bill, 2020 which is currently awaiting assent by the president (a bill only becomes law when it has been passed into law by the president).
The current Nigerian mental health law is the Lunacy Act which was enacted in 1916 and became law in 1958. From the name alone, you can tell it is archaic and discriminatory and does not provide for current trends and realities in mental health care and services in Nigeria.
The new bill seeks, among other things, repeal the 1958 Law and protect the rights of persons with mental health conditions and persons with psychosocial disabilities. The bill also provides for the establishment of a Mental Health Services Department in the ministry of health and a Mental Health Fund. It also provides for employment rights of people with mental health conditions.
It was an honour serving with other passionate mental health advocates on the planning team as well.
    Enjoy! ✨
