Kali is a dangerous self defense. When Philippines was colonized by spaniards Kali was banned, but filipino families practiced secretly at night to not be cought. Now it was practiced by our soldiers they do all the techniques (boxing,word,knives sticks(arnis)) At school we are thought arnis(stick fight) the basic of Kali.
They masked it as a kind of folk dance, our family practice few of the dances which has a lot of movements from Kali.

Kali is for warriors.. it is not self defence.. it is hand to hand combat.. it is offence.. it is design to kill..

I wanted to learn kali so bad. In college, we studied a variation of Kali called Arnis, which is a "type" of Kali using the sticks. From the other vids of Kali i watched, the masters often say that any weapon used in Kali is seen as an extension of the hand. Also, Kali is used with the intention of killing, not just striking or incapacitating someone. Another one is that Kali is one of the most danger martial arts style that it is taught in Armies as a form of combating style-disarming and kill. This is the exact reason why you won't see Kali being used in mma sports
Arnis I think is the first level, Kali/eskrima/Arnis is practice differently you start practicing with weapons then transition to hand to hand combat.
It's a martial arts for killing and counter-attack... Most kali is being taught to armed forces, enforcers, and body guards... Not really good for something like tournaments and sports... That's why Arnis is invented as its variation
Arnis, Kali, or Escrima is the same martial arts. It's just a matter of nomenclature and some minor differences of application. No, Arnis is not the beginner's level for kali. Kali wasn't even known until some US-Based guru named his style Kali since Arnis and Escrima sounded too western.

Arnis, Kali, and Eskrima are different terms for the same umbrella of martial arts. Kali is just the more internationally-used term while Arnis and Eskrima are more locally known in the Philippines.
It figures... Okinawa is quite near the Philippines. in fact i noticed some similarities in Okinawan and Filipino cuisine.
You might want to look into the idjangs (fortified forts) of Ryuku (other southern islands of Japan as well) and of Batanes (the small northern most island of the Philippines). They're quite similar. During 1500-1600 there are also Wakou pirates (diverse pirates from Japan, maybe Korea, China and southeast asia) who settled in North Luzon back when China allowed Manila to be one one of the few to exclusively trade with China at a time when said country did not allow other countries. I wouldn't be surprised if the Japanese somehow got inspired by some Filipino martial arts at some point. Both countries traded depending on China's policies even back then

@@lonicheight8492 Yeah because we teach them, also arnis did not originated on Korea, they didn't even do dual wielding like how Pilipino use machetes.
Okinawan's and Filipino's have a BIG connection in the old times. A Lot of the culture, cuisine and arts including martial arts are shared between both races. so its no surprise, Kali is shared and developed into or within the Karate artform.
My theory is that both martial arts had the same progenitor through time they began to separate and became their own thing.
Japonic and Austronesian shares many linguistic similarities!
I am a World History Professor at our local University and I can tell you that Okinawan's and Filipino's have almost no connection.
ITS A CONNECTED LAND MOST ARE ALMOST SIMILARITIES ISLANDER.
Here in our village in mindanao...we call it YawYan- Sayaw ng kamatayan or "dance of death" it is dangerous form of martial arts.
The biggest misconception people have regarding kali is it teaches stuck fighting that you can translate to bare handed forms. Kali teaches you principles that you can use for anything. They just use sticks cause you need a blade to kill someone.
You can kill people with a stick that's the essence of arnis
In kali You can kill without a weapon because your knees, elbow, shoulder, hands even your head can be used as a weapon.

Its a deadly Martial Arts thats why some parents doesnt want their kids to learn it because they dont want their children to go Rogue/Rebel or use it in a bad way. But Philippines has a warrior reputation like the Pintados(Tattooed Warriors) they got tattoo for every man they killed in battle; also the warriors were hired as mercenaries in other countries like Ayutthaya(Thailand today) with their war againts Burma(Myanmar today) and Cambodia.
Xander, I read about these warriors from Luzon who helped the King of Thailand subdued the Burmese fighters during the Ayutthaya war.

Mr Roberts, I appreciate the share of info but the Southern Filipinos fighters came to help Sultanate of North Borneo from getting massacred. In return they gave Sabah aka North Borneo as a gratitude. But the Dirty British crown failed to formally return the territory after the lease form Sultanate of Sulu. Peace
I actually watched kali on youtube and I heard them saying that "Kali" is NOT a sport.
It is lethal killing technique used hundreds of years ago.
And so..... kali is practised with the thought of killing and being killed.
I was like WTF! I also wanna learn but I'm too lazy.
It is actually a sport in the Philippines. Though in competition, they use a padded stick and full gear to avoid injuries. Also, one of the escrima kali's categories of the competition is the synchronization by team which what is called "Likha Anyo" where they only perform the stances.

i almost agreed but the way you spelled it is kinda sus.
I think it's more of convergent evolution of both Martial arts, Karate's goal is to defend, counter and subdue(knocking them out) the opponent. Kali on the other hand is to Defend, counter and kill(put them off balance to land the killing blow) the opponent. for both these arts, it converges in the defending part because defending is fundamental prerequisite in countering then comes either subduing or killing, this is where they branch out. It's a defending form that's natural, fluid, and easy to conceptualize even if both arts evolve separately.
it's like giving two-person a spoon, both don't know how to use it. in time they would both arrive at the same way to optimally use the spoon.
This isn't just a martial art
This is literally a killing art
Hence its practiced heavily in actual combat groups like the military

@@niccosalonga9009 Not all. Some are directed towards defense. Most have gone through the sports route: e.g. Aikido and modern Karate. They all have the potential for killing, but few remain focused on the kill itself.

Kali was ancient form of martial arts used by our ancestors prior to Spanish colonization. While the Japanese mastering the art of Samurai at this time, Filipino also mastering the art of Kali..
So proud to know this. I didn’t even know this art existed in the Philippines. We have to teach this to our schools explore and learn everything about our history. This is something to be proud and make drag off!!!

The karate instructor that he interviewed is not a filipino but a student by a late Filipino grand master in Kali definitely he was studied in the Philippines by he acquired the Kali knowledge.
Kali is known in many name in the Philippines, like arnis which is its most identified name in the Philippines but internationally now known as FMA(Filipino Martial Arts.
your indeed correct sir but there's still difference between the terminologies of most drills like sinawali in kali we call it pasunuran (meaning one right after the other)
Kali is already there before Spain came to the Philippines, but it was outlawed by Spain so the Filipino hide it by using sticks or cane.
They hide it in our dances as well, fandango sa ilaw is wrist, tinkling is footwork and that dance with coconuts is strike points.
Of course current versions of the dances are too far away from the actual techniques but you can still see the influence.
That's the reason as well why we do not use knives when eating. Spain really forbid our ancestor using such cutlery. Because everytime filipino uses knives during parties, it became a disaster. Even nowadays.
I agree. It was 15th century Ferdinand Magellan was killed by Lapu-lapu using Kali by a sword.
I think the biggest difference between karate and Kali/arnis/escrima is that Karate was made with self defense in mind, which can also be deadly, while kali was made with killing in mind which could also be used for self defense.
Kali or also known as Arnis or Eskrima is more than 2000 years old which originated from the Philippines. With the immigration from different Southeast Asian countries & East Indians to the Philippines, Kali martial arts have also evolved with different fighting techniques. Kali is also practiced in Indonesia. It was thought by some Philippine Historians that Ferdinand Magellan the Spanish Explorer who discovered the Philippines in 1521 during his exploration, was killed by a village Chieftain named Lapu Lapu by the use of the kali killing technique.

I've trained several arts and watched a bunch more. It turns out that a lot of different arts and cultures figured out movements that are more effective than others and the movements look a lot like the effective movements that others have found to work. After hundreds and hundreds of years with separate experimentation a lot of things can feasibly look similar.
I'm a Kali practitioner and it is only dangerous as you make it. It a blast and I love the art. The blades and getting hit being a big part it tends to turn people off from it. You can practice safely if you take appropriate measures. We wear armor most of the time when we fight and the blades are dulled. Training with proper equipment makes it no more dangerous than any other art.
Kali is so old, way back 16 century, spain lose to the Philippine because of Kali, but when the spain comeback with their troops, the Philippines lose and Spain forbid the Filipinos to practice Kali, but Filipinos learn it by secret.
Actually, Philippine lost because Spain allied with other local Kali practitioner to fight other Kali practitioner, Spain just supported their allies with better weapons.

@@artnov6792 nope, we didn't "betrayed" each other, it was simply the natural course of action. We're just a loose confederation of clans who was fighting each other before the Spaniards arrived. Over time, the dominant tribes who allied with the Spaniards eventually became the people known as the "Filipinos".
So basically, it's just human nature to want your clan to be prosperous than the other clan.
The reason why sticks are used in Kali is because Spaniards forbid filipinos to practice it so Filipinos use sticks to secretly practice it.. Kali is meant to use swords or knives

Allot more people probably know about Arnis (another name for kali) since students would get a brief introduction to it in highschool as parr of PE, Its just that not everyone is willing to dedicate time in studying it compared for example to boxing, though thats changing these days since kali is becoming more and more popular and is seen as a more pratical form of martial arts similar to that of Krav Maga.
Also some interesting fact about kali/Arnis: A couple of years ago (i think it was in the late 80s or 90s, i still remember it making the news when i was little) Arnis/Kali was breifly banned by the PH governement from being taught to anyone due to an alarmimg rise in reported cases of stabbings accross the country, it was overturned shortly because of how stupid that rule was to begin with and that if they continued the ban on arnis that would mean they would have to ban all other forms of martial arts that uses any type of bladed weapon, which include fencing, kendo and allot chinese based martial arts.
I learn arnis when i was in elemntary but later on it was stop becaause its too butal and painful when get hit by kamagong…

@@cliffrichard5950 kamagong is only use by professional arnis player since it's heavy and hard as iron. However, I did use a kamagong because at that time I was a beginner and did not know what wood stick to use.

One famous song has once says"bolo and sticks versus guns and cannon". It refers to Spaniards conquerors vs. Native Filipinos lead by Lapu2x against the mighty Magellan and his fully armoured soldiers.

Here is another possible connection...
In Karate there is a weapon called "sai" in Japanese. This weapon is actually not Japanese in origin. This weapon originally comes from Indonesia/Malaysia, where it is called tekpi ua-cam.com/video/OsqBhacRG6w/v-deo.html. The native martial art of Indonesia and Malaysia is called Silat, and it looks like this: ua-cam.com/video/Wmb-JCzS7WU/v-deo.html. It is widely accepted that Silat is the main influence of the Filipino martial arts. You can see the same movements and the same weapons in both...So it is possible that Karate was in some way influenced by Silat or Kali. We are sure that Karate began as a combination of White Crane Kung Fu and Naha Te. Maybe Naha Te came from Silat or Kali. We know for sure that the sai/tekubi did not come from White Crane Kung Fu.
I do see similarities between Kung Fu and Silat too, if u ask me. I think those connections might have something to do with ancient India.

During WW2, the Japanese were very surprised to learn about this as well. When the Japanese soldiers ran out of bullets and had to resort to sword fighting, the Kali masters cut them to pieces because of the big difference in style. Most of the Japanese soldiers wounds were in their arms, wrists and cuts to exposed blood veins. The masters were experts in finding the exposed areas during sword fights.

great grand father knows kali... he told me about ths stories way back 1980s .he's one of the filipino guerillia during ww2.
our place is known for traditional sword "SUNDANG" (tinamban ) even before the spaniard came.
I love looking at different arts and seeing them take similar principles but use them in their own way it really starts to open your mind

Japan and Pre Colonial Philippines were Great Trade Partners who fought side by side with the Philippines against the Spanish, I believe one of the emperors threatened Spain of a Full Japanese Invasion if they kept trying to colonize the Philippines, but he died before it could take place and Japan decided to Isolate themselves from the world.
and when the US forcebly made japan quit the isolation, in the mid to late 1800s there were still some Japanese people who wanted to free the Philippines, and tried to buy the country from Spain for 40 million pounds sterling. which was refused by Spain...
So it isn't really surprising that Kali/Eskrima/Arnis influenced Karate or vice versa.
It does not really matter where things came from. No one will ever know. It's just nice to know there are connection between Japan and Philippines.

Most Filipinos study Kali (it's called Arnis in Luzon) during high school. But almost nobody practices that outside school because people think it's impractical (except if you want to be a martial artist) and it's very deadly.
It's good to use as self-defense though.

Kali is not an Art, it's killing in its fastest form.
Some of my friend's grandfathers died fighting other kali warriors. Its almost a regular event not in streets but open fields or dirt roads to fight to the death. This was the old times. 1 of my friend's grandfather died fighting 3 guys with knives. He said his gfather killed all 3 but he died too because of his injuries. Applying kali is the last resort this is why respect is always eagerly practiced within or outside your own community.
That is the reason why Kali is not part of our school curriculum or even as a sport, using the same principles with or without weapons can be still dangerous. imagine this were taught to us Filipinos, it could be bloody as hell.
To make it hardcore, this art was used in PHL Army and in fact it was used in actual hand to hand combat. That story goes back to the tragic ops of SAF 44. Story goes one of the SAF he manage to kill 3 enemy at once with a single bolo.

Considering that that UA-camr was a Karate teacher and could be pulverized by this Kali teacher, it shows how powerful Kali is. It’s interesting that in a real fight outside of a Dojo, the Kali practitioner will win hands-down.

Karate is basically the kids version of kali.
Kali is the closest you can get in an street fighting, to protect yourself. In Kali no rules almost anything can be a weapon. That's why most action movies in Hollywood practice kali not to mention the movie John Wick Reeves practice Kali for that movie. And most Philippine mimitary use it to for their training.

The Bourne movies featured Kali. The fight choreographer was American martial artist Jeff Imada for the first three I think.
You can see that Kali is very pilipino style since Philippines use two matchete as their weapons ever since acient time and Kali practically fits their fighting style and their weapon, so those who kept claiming it is so disrespectful, pilipino is not selfish so we share our arts on the world.
Did you know that Philippines are the one who teach American soldiers the kali? Beside from that they also teach them how to survive in jungles.

It’s interesting to see a similar theme between arts and how they may have evolved through different histories. May have common roots, but how it’s passed along and the philosophies around them may offer different perspectives. All the more to learn from.
Now i know from where come from karate... My father did not go to school karate but she learn in by her self..... And i relate the moves now when i see my father show her karate skill......

I love the history of my country ,,the second master of BRUCE LEE is filipino martial arts ,,teaching Kali as well..the Game of death movie Bruce Lee used it..
I learned arnis along with boxing in elementary coz my father was teaching my younger brothers self defense. When I started working my co-workers calls me *dose pares. I don't even know what that is except for the literal translation.. 😂
Kali or arnis was taught in elementary school in the Philippines, and I recall learning that when I was in grade six.
The basic hubud or tegumi drill is the application of the first moves of Pin an sho dan which is a series of hammer fists. I learned it as part of kakie in Goju Ryu. Karate was introduced to the Japanese school system during the Ruso-Japanese War to make the students physically fit for military service. Read the 10 precepts of Itosu. He states that the goal is to make the body rock hard and the strikes as spears & swords.

Okinawan Castle must be related to Batanes Castle in 1200s when Visayan Pirates based their operation in Batanes and Taiwan(Penghu).
Salt making in Ikinawa the same with Ilokano in Luzon
karate is an offensive oriented it focuses on offence rather than defence, a good offence is good defence strike the opponent first and as fast as you can so that the enemy had no time to react. thats karates principle.
By the way the first person who defeated Bruce Lee on a fight is a filipino. Who use kali martial arts

Ancient Filipino People use it for combat. It was traditionally use by families but now it is fading away.
A master breaking your stick is the most "sit down, kid" experience one can ever have.
"Hubad" that means "to get naked" is tagalog word that belongs to the northern part of Ph..."Habad" that means "to entangled" is a Visayan/Cebuano word that belong to central and southern parts of the Ph
Kali is like a transitions of situation when in an actual war. At the beginning you might have weapons but as time goes by you might lost or break the weapon so you need to use anything long or short...if nothing at all then you have to use your barehands...exactly what happens in a dragging battle

I heard it long time ago but the main goal of that exercise is to kill enemies. I was afraid to investigate more because the face of the people exposed to that art were strong and fast moving.and it seems can do telepathy.
Now I'm curious in Kali vs Wing Chun since it's both offense and defense.
Learned isshin-ryu from a marine who was stationed in Okinawa for 10 years who then went on to do full contact kick boxing. Definitely one of my favorite and more practical martial arts.
Karate and kali are actually compliments each other. Symbiosis also apply on Taekwondo and kali. You can combine knife and stick attacks from kali on your upperbody while kicks from taekwondo on your legs. The beauty of kali is that it has the "killing intent" in mind. so it has not been nerfed or pacified by contact sports concept . Best and safe way to practice knife fighting sparring is make yourself a rubber knife or rolled paper and coat it with lipstick.
My father is a master of both Shotokan karate and lakas katorse style. He taught me both style but I havent pay much attention, so I'm literally good at "doctrines of none resistance style A.K.A cowardice" and "bluffing style" . bwihihihihihi. he is disappointed.
He told me my punches must have speed and power but I focus all the speed on my legs and power on my stamina. my frenemies died of exhaustion while chasing me.

kali is a practical art found by the filipinos during war it is a system that is developed for close quarter combats it is effective indeed im a kali practicioner myself endurance is a must have thing on it it also requires dedication and consistency if you'll ask me I've seen a couple similarities of it to martial arts in asian countries such as silat,karate, and wing Chun I'm once a wing chun practicioner so i observed how it relates

@@fenrir_Lokison9 There are drills for two sticks that can be converted to two swords. Most of the stick drills can translate well into sword drills. Though, if you're thinking about dual-wielding swords with 2 edges it could prove dangerous since Kali sword drills tend to keep the swords near the body for chambering of a cut because most Filipino long blades like Ginunting, Bolo, and Pinuti are single-edged.

The only know is the arnis weapon but the ali I think I only see in army training sometimes army of Philippines using bandana if there's opponent have knife and hand to hand combat I see 1 pinoy army using bandana 😁🥰🥰

Kali practitioner here. we also call kali "pekiti-tirsia" we primarily destroy the attacking limbs and small joint manipulation. the main weapon is the bolo and the traditional weapon is called the kampilan sword. The tricep block is the most useful for me.

Actually, when the japanese invade us they also manage to get our arts, anyway japanese use katana as they are samurai's while Philippines use bolo, matchete or sticks which suit the kali martial arts

Kali/Eskrima/Arnis (de mano)are kinda like martial "dialects" of the Philippines. My dad is from Luzon and it was generally called Arnis. This dialect happened when Spain banned bladed weapons.
Where my mom is from (the Visayan region), it was generally called Eskrima.
Kali is even further south like Mindanao, which may have been influenced by Silat.
Indonesian and Malaysian are very similar sounding to Tagalog. Counting 1-10 is very similar if not the same. "Lima" (5) is the same in all three languages. So it would make sense they shared other things like marital arts and religions. Incidentally, Mindanao has a huge Muslim influence as well.
