One of the reasons I’m so down with you guys…you recognize the brilliance of JPJ. He never got the love the other 3 members got. But he should’ve because he’s a musical genius. He went on to do film scores and orchestration for other bands. The man IS music. Much love ❤❤❤
Jonesy was the glue that held it all together and surely the most formally musically trained of the group.
@@BBaldwinit shows in his arrangements
JPJ is genius!
JPJ is pure magic! Zep's secret weapon for sure
JPJ was the Secret Sauce.
When a band has a track like this that's a "leftover", you know they're otherworldly.
Be certain to listen to "Travelling Riverside Blues" ... it wasn't on the original Coda release but was added to the CD release in 1993, along with 3 other tracks.
Oh hell yeah ! right up there with ANY Zep song
Love that song!
100%. Certified banger.
Part of the motivation for the song selection on Coda was to highlight Bonham's drumming. Thank you for keeping Zep in the rotation.
In music, a coda is a concluding musical section that is formally distinct from the main structure, which makes it an accurate title. Jimmy took this song from their performance at the Royal Albert Hall (RAH) and reworked the guitar a bit by adding a sub-octivider effect to it so that growling, sub-level sound you heard was from Jimmy's guitar. It stands to reason that a song called "We're Gonna Groove" would be a concert opener, and it was exactly that until they switched it for Immigrant Song.
This was a show-opener from their 1970 tour and was originally intended to be on Led Zeppelin II. It never made it on the album. Jimmy replaced some guitar tracks for this version.
Interestingly the beginning of Coda are two songs from the start of their 1970 Royal Albert Hall concert on Jimmy’s birthday, We’re Gonna Groove and I Can’t Quit You Baby. Although they actually play those back to back live. Glad you’re finishing up with Coda, it’s fitting. After this album you should definitely dive into their live stuff, including this whole 1970 concert.
That concert was great, especially How Many More Times.
@@allanbluzdude: The live version of We're Gonna Groove from that concert is my fave.
Guys, check out the Wikipedia for this album. Has the recording origins of every song, writing credits, etc. Coda is the concluding passage of a piece of music. Perfect title.
There are some real gems on this album.
Great reaction guys -- the low growling you are hearing is an effect Jimmy used on his Les Paul - it's called sub-octivider. This is a great song - they are all playing relentlessly - it doesn't stop - it keeps chugging along...brutal !
Thanks for doing the CODA Album. It’s songs that they had recorded but didn’t make the albums. They were contracted for one more album so Jimmy put this together after John Bonham died. Some great songs on it.
There's some footage of them doing this live at The Royal Albert Hall in 1970, Page later added some guitar overdubs
Toe tapping rock and roll.
BEAUTIFUL CREATURES "Ride"
You guys gotta go through the 3 essential Hendrix albums: Are You Experienced, Axis: Bold As Love, and Electric Ladyland. Putting this request out there as a huge fan of you guys. Would love to see your reactions.
Yes, back to Zep. I love this reaction.
You guys must see the Royal Albert Hall show where to first two tracks come from with no edits.
This song rocks, pure and simple
He was probably using a Boss OC-2 octave pedal for guitar or bass, which came out that same year. It allows you to mix in a note one octave or 2 octaves below the note you are playing, or both. Then you could add distortion with a fuzz box.
This song is from a live concert. They took out the crowd noise and added a few sounds before they put it on the album. I believe it's from 1969.
Correct! This was from the January 1970 Royal Albert Hall show.
One of my favorites on this album. Has that early Zeppelin alchemy...
I've been waiting for you guys to get to CODA, and I'm sure it'll be a while before you get to any live stuff. However, you should know that this song (We're Gonna Groove) and 'I Can't Quit You Babe' were both live recordings from their Royal Albert Hall show in 1970 which Page edited and added overdubs to... When you're finished with the album, I invite you to see/hear these two songs in their original glory as they opened that show. Here's the link... ua-cam.com/video/o3XpvxdlhAA/v-deo.html
I'll second and even third that with a suggestion that they cut to the chase and just WATCH the next track, "I can't quit you, baby"! It's the exact same sound, so why not see it as well, as it's a incredible performance and all.
💯🤟👏
they used to open shows with this tune
You guys need to do Hey Hey What Can I Do and Traveling Riverside Blues, two great Zep songs that are only on compilation albums.
You guys need to react to the live version from Royal Albert Hall in 1970. Bonham kills it!
YES!!!!! so great...good suggestion!
This track is the live version from RAH, 1970, with the crowd removed.
@@tektoniks_architects You think.? Did they have that technology back then.??
@@tektoniks_architects the 1970 RAH original has a totally different vibe.
This is the RAH. There wasn't any crowd noise to speak of. They slightly edited Plant's vocal and of course over dubbed a bunch of guitars.
You gotta check out “The girl I love she got long black wavy hair”, great riff, Robert Plant fantastic vocals
Great song, this was when the fire was red HOT!! Outtake from first album...
You guys have great ears!!! I think the growling is actually Jimmy - maybe an over dub - but I could be wrong ☺ filmed Royal Albert Hall concert 1970 🔥🔥 Thanks for the reaction - there's still a lot more to discover 😁☮
Love your take! I agree with everything you said. How is this one not an earlier album. And it was 100 mph right from the get-go. Love the energy.
I think that deep growling sound is jimmy on the tremolo arm of the guitar ( pushing it down low so all the strings go loose and crunch and growl thou the pick ups ) all my best to you and yours from Liverpool
This is a cover of a tune by Ben E. King ("Stand By Me", "Spanish Harlem", and many other hits as a solo singer and member of The Drifters).
Coda would have been most bands ultimate album!!! We’re Gonna Groove, Darlene and Bonzo’s Montreux were my favorites on the original.
I think it’s rhythm section forward which I love. The future additions are fantastic. St. Tristan’s Sword plus other popular songs like B-side Hey Hey What can I do.
Hopefully you guys give the deluxe edition a listen to, worth it.
In terms of music I usually take 'coda' to mean 'coming full circle', a kind of 'bringing it all back home' as in 12-bar rock 'n' roll when you hit the turnaround, like a spiral staircase, you're back to the same place but you're on another level...
This is from a live concert. They added a couple of sounds when they added this song to the Coda album.
I hope you guys do "Wearing and Tearing", Darlene" and "Walter's Walk" all Great tunes on the Coda album.
Ozone Baby too.
Under rated leftover tracks. Great stuff.
check out the live version of this song, Royal Albert Hall 1970
This track is actually taken from a live performance that you could find on video. Is from 1970. What they did was added layers of guitars & bass. I highly recommend you finding that video. The live version without all the edits and overdubs is the way to go.
Live ' Song remains the same ' album after this album I hope
Guys wait to you get to travelling riverside blues think the lemon song on steroids great reaction 💪👍🙏
Just so you know, this album was only 8 songs long originally. Though, they have added bonus tracks when they've rereleased it. Here's the wikipedia: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coda_(Led_Zeppelin_album)
Loved this album, Not many do.
Great album for a throw away. You have to do Hey Hey and Travelling Riverside Blues. 👍
Today could be my favorite day on your channel!
Black Sabbath then Zeppelin!
Even their leftovers are worth a listen along with the 100s of live videos of them on YT. Rock On! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶
That was 🔥🔥🔥
Coda...better album than most bands!! This is actually live.
I am sitting in chicago traffic right now enjoying the hell out of this
Lol! The Dan Ryan? I live in Chicago too! 😁
@@juliemanarin4127 yep, inbound Dan Ryan. I listen to these guys all the time on my route👍👍
@@klasseact6663I am about 35 miles NW of Chicago myself. Dan Ryan is an adventure in itself.
You should listening to LED ZEPPELIN BBC sessions.. it's a live studio recording... Insane
I second this....
Coda was originally released as just a 2 sided album. This and I Can't Quit you Baby are from live recordings. The rest is a mix of "lost" recordings and live performances. People forget- albums could only be engineered 20 minutes on each side of the album. So the "lost" recordings could partially be stuff that literally just didn't fit.
Recommendation - Travelling Riverside Blues
That growl you here is Jimmy Page hitting those low power cords! Jimmy is the wizard and the Lord of the dark strings!
No. It was a live recording. Jimmy made it sound like a studio production.
That was actually the live at Royal Albert Hall version redux in the studio with added guitar solo and backing . The live track on video is actually better.
The original CODA release has only eight songs, and they are excellent. That could simplify things for you. Most of them are favorites of mine.
Sound check from ‘72 on tour…
I think you guys are the only ones that have reacted to coda. 😊
No…Soul Train Bro definitely did.
@@helenespaulding7562 @SoulTrainBro did it all!
@@tektoniks_architects YAAAAAY Soul Train Bro!
Great tune hardly heard. Nice pick up on jpj and that grungy funky groan sound, might have missed its big roll in the mix of things. Thanks guys
Great song fellas. It's actually a live recording that page put through the studio.
💯
Yes….after In Through The Outdoor and Bonzo’s death…the only thing to do was for Jimmy Page to create an album of previously unreleased songs.
You had it right the first time, these are cuts that didn’t make the album. I believe this song was recorded 1:29 for the first album
1 word
" Superfly "
Yeah Coda is the end of a classical piece
an early show opener
😎👍
This is off-topic but wondering if you guys could listen to "Cry Some More" and "You are the Show" by the Outlaws? They both are from their album Playin to Win. Excellent guitars and vocals
Just a thought! Love what you guys do!!!!
The album only gets better from there out. Bonze will blow you away as well. Enjoy!
JPJ is an engineer
You didn't play in the band like I did 🤣
great song, listened to this so many times and i gotta say this version sounds a bit different
Realistically you can skip 9,10,11, 14,17,18-23 they are all double ups or rough demos of previously released songs
Got it. All those songs had me scared for a minute there.
I consider We’re Gonna Groove bottom of the barrel Zeppelin. However, as a previous commenter stated, there are a couple gems on here. “Darlene” and “Poor Tom” are terrific! “Traveling Riverside Blues” is great, too, but it wasn’t originally part of this album.
Sounds like Greta van fleet
Please include "Baby Come on Home", it was added in a later version of Coda.
Robert channels his inner Aretha Franklin.
I've read that the song was on tapes found in the trash.😮
hey fellas, me again, the guy begging for the live stuff i know youll get to eventually lol. This is the first song on the royal albert hall dvd. They transition from this song to " i can't quit you babe" is out of this world. total early zeppelin blues performance the whole concert. Amazing to see! a few good songs on this album as well.
We’re going to get to a few lives. It’s hard because UA-cam always blocks our Led Zeppelin lives and we don’t want to get any strikes
To avoid getting blocked when doing live stuff, react to their official live album releases, starting with the 1976 double live album The Song Remains the Same and ending with the 2003 album release of How The West was Won. They are both 🔥!!
@@finessemuse2123 Good suggestions....I would also suggest the BBC Sessions, which are them in their young prime.
@@AirplayBeats that is definitely a tricky hurdle to deal with. I wonder if instead of using a video of the song that's on UA-cam, going to the full concert and finding that song and time stamp would work? Idk I'm just spit balling. If nothing else, I hope you guys get to watch it on your personal time and maybe make a statement at the end of one of these. I'll put all my money in the fact that you'll be blown away lol. Thanks for what you do though!
Great reaction as usual. CODA is basically what you might call leftovers, but still good stuff for the most part. That said, don't forget the live double album "The Song Remains the Same"
Wait till you get to Bonzo's Montreux......Bonzo goes off
You;re right, and described it perfectly--that "growling" is bad-ass! Is it Jimmy's guitar? Really glad you guys continued till the "studio" end, with "Coda" (They WERE contractually obliged to release another. Their Vault was deep.) When you get to #3, "I can't quit you, baby," I would say just go ahead and WATCH it, as the very good quality video is the EXACT same audio as the album (It's a sound check from a 1970 show). Kill 2 birds with one stone and all. Either way, the performance is Gobsmack City!
I love this album. It’s a throw back kind of album. This seems to be a demo album selling it to record industries. This album needs to be considered among the rest of their albums.
"Deluxe Edition" Some are repeats of what you have already heard with just a little change up.... and /or the demo cuts which are actually better than the original in my opinion.
Thank you for doing Coda ❤ supposedly a left over from Led Zeppelin II
Can't wait til you get to the Royal Albert Hall concert from 1970. They opened the show with this song and almost blew the arena up but then instantly went into I Can't Quit You Babe which brought the dynamics from about 120 mph to 2mph instantly.
this is an overdubbed live track from royal albert hall 1970. that entire gig is STELLER!
heres the untouched live track ua-cam.com/video/o3XpvxdlhAA/v-deo.html
Have to do Bonzo's Montreux. All drums, not really a solo but nothing else like it.
They do the whole album in order.
One of the best Zep tracks there is and I'm surprised it ended up on a 'leftover' album, but at least we got it eventually. You should have a look at the live version of this from the Albert Hall London in 1970, it's epic!
A cover by Ben E. King of a live recording at Royal Albert Hall 1970 with new guitar overdub and audience elimination so that a song of 2:34 can be released to fulfill the record contract with the main company Atlantic Rec👎✌
This is a Ben E. King cover that Zeppelin used to open some of their early shows with... Good stuff.
It's a good cover version, but check out Manfred Mann's version.
I have mixed feelings about this album. It was a depressing time to be a Zeppelin fan, and it was put together just to fulfill a contract. It was also a bad time in my life, so I don't listen to this much at all.
"Coda" literally means "Tail" in Italian. It is the ending section of a piece of music.
The original album only has 8 tracks. But the bonus tracks will fill out all they had left in the vault.
I was drummer in a band that did a tight cover of this song. Really fun to play!
canny wait to bonzos montreaux, , what a tribute from jimmy
You guys should play Buddy Guy "I smell a rat"
Very cool song. I can assure you!
This is Zep's most Sabbath-like track.
This song was cut from second album
One can hear the influence of James Brown here
Great tune but drums too low in the mix :(
Would not surprise me if they did more than listen to a song by Eric Clapton called "Cocaine" before the record button was pressed.
Cocaine was recorded by Clapton about 6-7 years after this track. Maybe Clapton listened to this before he pressed record?
There is film to this one
