Ship battles - like it or not, Obsidian dared to innovate it - its a risky business. But I admire them for pushing it. Now I'm loving & enjoying it. It certainly fits the CRPG game style. Great job Obsidian!

Just to say that the order of food drinks matter too. If you put water and tack on the leftmost slot then crews will consume those first, which give -1 morale per day.

I'm very new to this game, so before I jumped into naval combat I figured I should watch something first before I have to spend money on preventable repairs. Inspecting the enemy's cannons at the start of every fight seems like such a common sense thing to new, but there's no way I would have thought to do it, so I'm glad I checked this out!
I have tried just about every combo so far and eventually went with a Junk with The red dream hull (110 hull strength) and 10 double bronzers. I can kill any ship except the gallon in one broadside (I usually do around 80 points of hull damage/broadside). The only ships I board are longships as they are too fast to try to kill with cannon fire. The 250-350 effective range takes a little bit of micro management but it is not that difficult to pull off.
I used that tactic, and what i thought was a pretty meh mechanic turned my character into a semi-pirate chicc who now wants to gain every triumph there is in this game.

There is difference on damaging crew on boarding battle. You fight less. Any other ship is just like ours, the captain and its companion doesnt do ship work, therefore always ready for boarding battle. If the crew survive they join the fight, if not, they are knocked unconcious. Although, there is a limit of number of people who can join the boarding battle, depending on ship size
You should know that Wyrmtongues only fire one type of ammo no matter what you select, Fire ammo. They're basically specialized flamethrowers that hit sails and hull. Also, just because the cannons aren't effective under 200m doesn't mean they won't hit you after they use Hold and you're giving them the broadside. If the goal is to board, I find it's best to close in fast, wait till they fire while you're giving them the nose, turn, hold, fire grape, jibe, hold, fire grape, turn and close in to board. Oh and it does reduce the number of enemies, you can check by reloading.
So you cannot fire grape with Wyrmtongues? That means you get more hognose cannons to do your strategy? I hope you can still remember after 6 years 😅

From what I've read and everything I've seen while playing, there is no impact on doing any damage to the crew first to how many enemies you have once you board. Seems like something that really should have been included.

Maesterful When they get injured, they can’t do their duties working ship combat. Like shooting cannons, rigging sails, etc. so it does help.

Grapeshot only hits above deck crew (deckhands, boatswains and helmsmen), cannoneers are below deck crew. You should use regular cannon balls to hit them.

Attacking the crew members seems virtually useless if you're going to be boarded. It looks like the enemy number on deck remains unchanged. It seems it is effective since you can avoid the on deck battle. Can you confirm?

Guide isn't bad for people just starting out but trust me in the end when you can afford it you're going to want to change tactics and grab at least the Dhow (which has a 2 turn jibe not 3) and use double bronzers. I mean a Junk with double bronzers will pretty much shred anything in 1-2 volleys but the Dhow is still pretty nimble and gets the job done as well. I've used a Dhow all the way through to the end of the game many times. Tis a shame the Fonferrus is so worthless because I love the looks of it while it's sailing. Still a decent enough ship if you need a bigger ship until you can afford something bigger than the Defiant. I would say the most important thing to remember when fighting ships higher level than you is to try to time your shots for when they're fore or aft is facing you. Most of the time after they shoot they will turn toward or away from you because the AI is stupid. Take advantage of the extra damage you'll get, it's something like 50-100% more damage hitting from front or back opposed to broadside. Which is also why the voyager is really not good for anything other than exploration and boarding straight off. The cannons are situated in the fore and aft which will get you killed if you try to fight ship to ship.

You'd be surprised how often Cannons miss while out at sea. Not all Cannons were "Rifled" back than.

I'm pretty sure the name of that second ship, "The River Dragon" (Voyager), is an homage to the band Nevermore.
This tactic does not work anymore, with your 2' canoneer you barely hit...even a one cannon ship front and back will board you...most larger ships have 0 min range cannons too..2/2...first 4 battles all lost

In my 100 hours of gameplay, I never use the cannon balls at all. Just dock to the other ship, and let my battle mage slaughter them all .
Update: crew can specialize in any role, (regardless if they start with that role). Not sure yet if using them in different roles will mean they cant hit max experience for that one role.

Depends on the playstyle mate. With galleon you can ram smaller ships and destroy them immediately. Also i believe galleon has more cannon slots.
I was trying to save up for a Galleon bcos I thought my ship was useless against bigger ships but after your excellent guide I'm not going to bother and spend my loot elsewhere!
No, it is useless. The only thing galleons have is more hull health and they have only four cannons per side. Junk has five. Once you get a junk, mount double bronzers all over the place. With a good crew you'll be able to oneshot every ship with the sole exception of galleons and other junks. Junks take one jibe, galleons usually as well. You also don't have to board enemy ships, you can just sink them and take their stuff from the wreckage. The loot is slightly randomized, I tried killing one ship four times - twice by boarding, twice by shooting it to pieces and got different loot every time, but the loot from the wreckage wasn't any different.

Anyone else kinda wish it took longer to reach legendary captain rank? I mean I reached legendary before I was even able to upgrade from sloop to dhow
Seems like they have changed it quite a bit, above deck crew damage seems to always be 1 now and there isn't a brace for impact option i can see

It seems like any 3 skull ship i cannot hit crew with grapeshot, with the starter/low tier ship. Have had the same experience 3 times hitting crew 0% of the time with 100% chance to hit, mainly hitting sails. Maybe there is some sort of hidden stat that prevent's low tier ships from ganking the big boy ships.

Havent used Junk yet so cant help you there.
Default AI settings are good so just use that.
If its a healer put Cautious and for everything else aggressive.
If youre multiclassing and for example using crusader as a tank and healer then you put Fighter aggressive in first place and paladin cautious in the 2nd place.
AI will do the job just fine.

I use elf mage - but he never use spells.
And because Maia was bugges for me and left me - leaving 3 notes of farewell instead of one, i recruited this druid guy who i will build by your guide. At least this druid guy change shape...
All others refuse to use skills. Only keep hitting like idiots :/

I swear everytime I get the upper hand on an enemy ship in the first cannon volley the game crashes.. every time
Doesnt work for me at all. I have closed distance with the enemy ship by 90 meters, just to be constantly shot by Long Imperial Cannon which has ideal range 300-600 meters.

I've tried ship combat once and don't want to do it ever again. Someone created a mod that eliminated close to board damage to zero, and from version 5.x official patch introduced that as an option when meeting ships.

Ship combat can be summed up in one sentence: close the distance as fast as you can until you're within boarding range.
Fighting with cannonfire is pointless as you're more likely to lose sailors and endure massive damage.

I could kiss you for being so to the point about how to do the easiest thing. This game doesn't tutorial. Not really, so thank you for this. I watched a few other videos and despite talking for as much as 23 mins they never actually said anything helpful. You did more in exactly 1 min than they did in the better part of half an hour. Where should I mail your kiss to? You might be the only Russian I ever say that to.

Ship combat is the only reason why I stopped playing the game. After every engagement, even if I win, my ship is in ruins and my crew is all messed up and needs 20+ days to heal.
20 days? Why not get a surgeon -_-.
If you wanna ignore the ship fights just spam the 1 option and board them, in 50 hours ive only ever taken like 2 cannon shots and killed like 10 ships or so.
Just be ready for the first 5 seconds as the enemy likes to focus one guy down but other than that its just a large scale melle.
Wartoko, Exactly! I will say though that it helps if you get yourself a lot more party reserves and a full crew, because in boarding actions, it's not just your party doing the fighting. Your party's reserve members are also on deck fighting, as well as the crew.

Oh god, this guide is so long. All you need is just to buy 4 bronzers. They can deal huge damage even on the first ship. Your attack distance will be 250-350. Before shooting just use hold position for more accuracy, fire then jibe, hold position and fire, jibe again, hold position, fire - you do this till enemy ship is destroyed. Yeah, sometimes enemy will kill you, cause your sloop is not so tough, just load game and start again. I was able to destroy any ship in the game except for drakkars, cause they are fast and try to take your ship on board. Do not waste your ammo on enemy crew and sails, just fire cannoballs. Some ship will try to escape the battle, in this case you can use chainshot.
