- This here is the original undubbed, audience-free and unedited studio version. It was released on the compilation cd Funk Power 1970: A Brand New Thang (1996).
In March 1970, most of Brown's mid-to-late 1960s road band walked out on him due to money disputes, a development augured by the prior disbandment of The Famous Flames singing group for the same reason in 1968. Brown and Famous Flames singer Bobby Byrd (who elected to remain in the band during this tumultuous period) subsequently recruited what was to become the first line-up of "The J.B.’s". Among them were the brothers Bootsy (19 years, bass) and Catfish (21 years, guitar) Collins, saxophonist Robert McCulloch and John "Jabo" Starks (drums). Their first recording, “Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine,” was recorded the same night they were on the job in only two takes.
Sex Machine purports to be a live recording. However, the first of two LP's material consists of tracks recorded in studio settings with added reverberation and overdubbed applause.

Notice how Brown exhorts tenorist McCulloch to “Blow me some Trane, brother!” a reference to John Coltrane.

As long as I live, this cut will forever b bumppin in my head, one downfall on this particular version is the bumpin baseline of one Mr Bootsy Collins! , but his brother Phelps is carrying it with his lead guitar !

Thanks man it took a while to find this! The same 1970 track exists on UA-cam but it's either been re-edited or converted from LP improperly. This deserves to be the top result for the song.

+Edyson Tucadiscos Hi Edyson, NO it's NOT vinyl. It's on 'Star Time' if I remember well. It is the most pure cut from this song from the beginning to the end and not released at the time this way. I only used some photo's from the sleeve of Sex Machine, maybe I shouldn't ave. Pure class that has been in caves for decades. The some story with "Papa's got a brand new bag", look it up on my channel and man, you'll be as surprised as you were with this one :-)
