In this episode the Routemaster 4 Hire team rebuild the front blind box and take a festive trip to London on the open-top Routemaster.
Here is the 8th in a series of videos following the restoration and repair of an AEC Routemaster London double decker bus. RM1214 is the latest AEC Routemaster to join the Routemaster4Hire fleet, but before she can carry passengers again we need to undertake some long overdue work on this iconic double-decker bus.

All our buses are the iconic Routemaster London Double-Decker bus; each vehicle has been beautifully restored back to the original 1960's condition. With immaculate paint and bodywork, they are real head-turners. Inside they are equally pleasing with comfortable re-upholstered seats and authentic 1960s colour scheme; the interior paintwork is complemented by varnished wooden floors and tungsten lighting which create a warm homely glow inside the bus.

You guys are so natural. Great to watch. I am especially interested as I live in London and, being born in 1948, I grew up with Routemasters and loved them. As a 'biker. I am also a great fan of The Ace and have been going there since around 1964.

Oh wow, only just caught up with this episode. Started watching your posts about a month ago. Instant history. A 159 nearly killed me in Thornton Heath in 1962. On Sundays they used to run out of Parchmore Road and on into Croydon. I was riding my bike through the intersection with TH High Street and an RT loomed out of the darkness on my left and over my bike inches behind the saddle. Both my lights were on (even after the impact!). And I actually got the price of a replacement bike out of LT. Not an event I wish to repeat however.
Another great video, nice to see Tim turns up for the difficult bits and Alan in his cameo roll 😄, hopefully see you all next year and hopefully it's better than the one we have just had ....gazza

You can mix that aluminum cleaner slightly stronger in a pump up sprayer and make for lighter work. Leave it on for a few seconds to develop a light foam and then rinse off. No scrubbing needed.

I still have my 'budget key' somewhere to open the blind boxes. Don't know why they were called that. Very similar ones that I used on the railway we call 'carriage keys'.
Lots of ex RM drivers on the railway. Unbelievably one of our female drivers at Salisbury didn't like driving them 😮
Give me an RM over any other bus any day. Well maintained it will run rings around them.

Love these videos, brings back some great memories. I was lucky enough to work out of Streatham Hill Bus Garage in 2004 and got to run these absolute beauties in service on the 137 during the last couple of months before they were replaced. As drivers we were offered them for £2,000 each. Gutted I didn’t have the money at the time as I’d love to have one now. Keep up the great work 👍😎

My first thought was... 'why the hell has he fitted venetian blinds?' Found this interesting as I own blind panel and front glazed section from an RM.
Loved the video .. including the out-takes!🤣.. especially enjoyed the section on your trip down to London to join in the 159 run. I was lucky enough to have been on the LT Country Area Green RML2440 that accompanied you on the run from Ace Cafe down to Thornton Heath and back. So was glad you included a couple of shots of Peter Cartwright’s bus in your video & also the passing RF136 in the prototype white & green Greenline Livery that was never carried in service by the refurbished RF Coaches, but did appear for a short while on the RC class. RF136 had been out for a wedding!

Got a lump in my throat this xmas... used to ride the 159 regularly down to Brixton,. Seeing the sights reminded me again how much I miss my home city but it’s never felt right since they took the RMs away.. feels like London lost part of its soul. Greeting from SW Wales... wonder if it was one of your RMs that I saw down here (on the A477 towards Haverfordwest) some years ago? I was so surprised I nearly wrote my car off staring at what I was certain was a hallucination 😁😂🤣
Chris, what you described we see very often - other motorists giving us a double-take as they spot us driving along, the look on their faces is often quite amusing (and sometimes quite dangerous) as they take their eyes off the road to look at the bus. I have even seen other drivers using their phone to take a photo/video as they overtake us. Glad to have brought back some memories of the 159 for you too. @@Routemaster4Hire My best wishes to you and the team, it’s nice to see the quality of workmanship going into these vehicles, a level of care I doubt they have seen since centralised overhauling was ceased and the individual companies started hacking the vehicles about. I traveled on a 36b some years back that had had cctv added to the saloons but it hadn’t been done with any Craftsmanship, it looked the bodge it was, and I seriously doubt it would have been of an acceptable standard to LT when they operated the vehicles themselves.
Yep, wouldn’t it be nice if Aldenham Bus Shops were still there, although I live in Devon I really miss the old RT,s and the sound of their Engines. What a waste when Aldenham was destroyed in the name of so called Progress. Thanks for sharing, how’s that old RT coming on?

This was a very entertaining and enjoyable video,I do have one question,coming from Australia I have never been on a Routemaster ,you mentioned being on an open top bus so I was wondering what the heaters on the Routemasters were like,are they efficient? Cheers and keep the videos coming,I have subscribed.
Hi Nigel, the heaters on a Routemaster are actually very good so the cab and both lower and upper decks do get nice and warm in the winter. The open topper has had the vents sealed on the upper deck so no heating there, but the lower saloon is lovely and warm in the winter - not that we use the bus much in winter!
My friend had a Land Rover with the plate KVS602 it was an unissued Scotland reg given when the original was removed and sold on I’m guessing the bus behind you in a lot of the video was originally on a plate worth something?
Some of the firms that took over when London Busses was privatised (a black day in my opinion) inherited RMs that were allocated to the garages & routes they were running, as these vehicles were withdrawn and sold off some of the *LT series plates (early RMs were registered in series CLT VLT & WLT) were transferred to newer vehicles often these were the “hire fleet” that the operators had (often with upgraded interiors) the “donor” RMs had unissued (age appropriate) Scottish numbers allocated, as happens with classic cars if the original plates are sold on.
Chris is right in his reply, In the case of RM471, she lost her original registration (WLT 471) when she was operated in Scotland with Kelvin Scottish. We have tried to get the registration back but unfortunately its currently on a Nissan! This car is owned by an ex-employee of Kelvin Scottish, so I highly doubt we will get it back anytime soon.

Boxill-Harris I was wondering, why couldn't you and your teammates can still do those Rebuilding and Repainting those nice fresh shiny Gardner 6LXC, Gardner 6LXB, Volvo TD102KF, Gardner LG1200, and Cummins M11, 4 Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Automatic Transmission Alexander RV Buses and Repaint them to a Grey Green Colours just like the original Scania Grey Green's which were in the North London and East London bus routes such as 141, 168, 179, 210, 275, 125, 173, 24, 167, 313 and also the bus route 103, if you guys would like to Rebuild about 226 of Those Gardner 6LXB, Gardner 6LXC, Volvo TD102KF, Cummins M11, and Gardner LG1200, 4 Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Automatic Transmission Alexander RV Buses can you and your teammates put most of those Gardner 6LXC and those Gardner LG1200 4 Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Automatic Transmission Alexander RV Buses to those East London and North London and that especially is including the London Bus such as those London Bus Routes such as for example the N41, 341, N29, 86, 221 and will also be including the North London Bus Route Number 121 for all of us Grey Green bus lovers in North London and including East London For all of us passengers out there Pretty Please? could you Repaint them in the Exact Grey Green Bus Colour and put them on the London Bus Routes which are 341, 179, N41, 34, N29, 149, 221, N73, 121, 86, 30, 296, 262, 147, 396, 56 and N26 for all of us Grey Green Bus lovers out there because we are Really Really desperately needed Are those types of colour buses to be brought back again Please?
