what camera were you using to film the starter? I assume you used a remote screen to see what you were doing. I have a 2600 striper and I see that in my future. please advise.
My 5.7GSi flooded and stayed that way for a few months. The starter terminals are grossly corroded and one thick red wire came off completely due to the corrosion. This wire goes directly to the battery. I don’t see that wire in this video. Is that not from the starter?
@Shadetree Mechanic I just need to know if that same starter works on my 4.3 GXi volvo penta, if yes please share the link to buy it, and thank you for the video super helpfull!!!!
Thanks for the video! my engine flooded this past winter so I will be changing my starter as well. I did get the engine to run for a bit but then turns off...any advice?
Make sure the flame arrestor is clean (boat version of an air filter), while you have the f.a. off look at the condition of the carburetor, if there's corrosion, it should be rebuilt. Remove the fuel line from the carb and make sure the fuel pump is moving fuel. Good luck. Let me know how you make out
@Shadetree Mechanic new starter works great...after troubleshooting I found water in the filter , gonna pump out my tank and see if that does the trick
Which wires? All of them? The smaller wires are part of the harness and will be a pain in the ass to track and replace. The large power wire should be pretty simple. The bigger the gauge wire the better.
I just bought a 1996 striper sea swirl with a 4.3 GL Volvo Penta that looks very similar to the 5.0 in your video. When I first saw it , the seller had it running and the engine was running very smoothly but when we went to restart it, it was making loud grinding sounds but still starting. I got it home and it was doing the same thing but wouldn’t start. After a short while it wouldn’t do anything. I suspected either the starter or the Fly when ring (from what I read online) then I went to remove the starter and noticed the solenoid was actually broken off the starter and the inner spring was in the motor well along with a screw and inside the broken solenoid another inner part came out. I spent two hours trying to figure out how to remove the starter without success. Can anyone tell me if the starter comes out the same way on a 4.3 gl as the 5.0 in this video?
Just looked at the starter for your engine. It looks like it has the same two bolts on the bottom. If you've removed the bolts already, the starter teeth maybe be stuck in the flywheel. Hit it nicely with a hammer and it will come out.
@@ShadetreeMechanic Thank you I am going to try to remove it tomorrow morning and see if I find success with it. I am glad I found your video, it’s the only one I found that clearly shows where I can find the bolts to remove the starter. I will let you know how I make out with it.
@@ShadetreeMechanic Thank you so much for this video. Very helpful. When you say hit it nicely with the hammer... do you mean to hit the canister - the cylinder-shaped piece of the starter?
Keep up the goodness of showing what we don't know, I just bought a boat in this model and your video helped me a lot,

Just a go pro. Hopefully I'll get up to 1000 subscribers and I'll purchase a 4k camera at that point. Good luck with the starter job.

The top stud when the starter is installed is where the power wire from the battery goes. Sounds like you have a big job ahead. Good luck

I'm not sure if they match up. 4.3 I believe is a V6 so I doubt they are the same. Good luck with the project.
I know your post has been a while back. Are you still posting

I would clean up the wires before putting on post they look bad
Always a good idea to clean the terminals before reinstall
Can you send the link of the one you purchased? How has it seemed to hold up?
I honestly don't remember what website I bought it from, however it's held up great and I've had no issues.
How did you get that first bolt off? I can’t get my socket in there, there’s no room.
It's tight, but mine has enough room for an adjustable rachet
I ground down an inexpensive socket (to make it a thin wall) and an open end wrench so they would fit for mine install.
Worked for me
If I need to replace the wires that go to that starter what do you recommend?
Which wires? All of them? The smaller wires are part of the harness and will be a pain in the ass to track and replace. The large power wire should be pretty simple. The bigger the gauge wire the better.
did you have to take off the exhaust manifold?
No. Just the two bolts that hold it on

@@TheJlantz definitely the canister. Don't hit the smaller peice.
The last bolt near the motor is a bear for me, I had mirrors and a light and still took forever.
How the hell do you get to the starter
Right side of the engine through the little hole in the hull
You didn’t show how to take it off lol
