- In this video I'll show you a simple way to modify a sprinkler valve for use in an air cannon / spud gun. This modification will allow your valve to open much faster than normal, providing you with more power.

Rick, That's one of the clearest explanations of how the valve works and how to modify it that I've seen. Thumbs up.
This is an awesome mod. I made a handheld rifle style rocket launcher for my kid using the same valve, but used two 9-volt batteries and wired them to the solenoid. It worked great, getting about 100 yards per launch. I'm sure this is going to greatly expand that. Thanks.
No problem! Another benefit to this mod is that you won't need the batteries any more. If you design it properly you can use the air blower valve as a trigger.
The membrane prevents the air from escaping. Air comes in and gets stuck in the chamber since the membrane is in the way. Some air is underneath the membrane and some on top. If your air tank is at 30PSI, then there is 30PSI on top and bottom of the membrane. Equal forces keep the membrane in place. Pulling the trigger releases the air from the top, dropping the pressure down lower than 30PSI for a moment. The bottom stays at 30PSI and is now stronger than the top so it pushes the membrane up.
Then leakage in our release valve might be the weakness in ours--that is making it honk like the World's Loudest Goose. To the drawing board!
There is more surface area exposed to pressure on the top than the bottom of the membrane, so when closed there is more force keeping it shut.
Could you make this modification to a brass/metal sprinkler valve?
Works great!
I don’t think it matters if the tapes rated for gas if it’s just air. Unless you’re using another type of gas for your air pressure.
Man I just need an animation at this point. I can’t understand it unless I am visually shown what is going on. Sometimes I hate being a visual learner.
Any alternatives for the blowgun nozzle?
I use 160psi in my cannon. will that be too much for this mod? can I drill a bigger hole and bush it up accordingly?
Will this stop the honking?
That's what ours does. Honks REALLY loud. What kind of valve did you use?
Can you put components in description
hi dude. just just build my first potato gun. iv just order a sprinkler valve. but i may be stupid but i cant really work out how the air trigger work by letting the air out. if you could explain it would be great.
thank dude
The part where I try to explain this in the video starts at 1 minute, but it is kind of confusing. I hope my other comment with explanation is enough! Let me know if you are still confused.
Mine wont work. Blows air out the trigger instead. Any suggestions ?
I'm having same issues
maybe you switched the sprinkler valve around? The inlet and outlet have to be hooked up to the air chamber and barrel respectively
Excellent tutorial. Our valve is the same model--with a slight difference in the rubber diaphragm. The white plastic part that fits inside of the spring is integral with the black rubber diaphragm. Our launcher got up to about 20PSI and started "tromboning": making a super loud resonant horn sound that continued until the remaining pressure was released. The flow arrows are pointed IN the direction of tennis ball/air travel and we closed the opening as shown in this video. Lemme go back and check some stuff--either way, we just made the world's loudest air horn!
Can you just use some hot glue?
Hot glue works best. Hi temp for strength. The epoxy is more hassle than anything.
