      Most combines do not reach maximum threshing throughput, especially in non irrigated crops due to lack of power. While the combine engine is capable of outputting enough power to achieve maximum threshing throughput, there is a balance. The faster the combine has to move, the more power is used to move it, thus throughput capacity is not at a maximum. Using a bigger header allows the combine to take in more grain at a lower speed and reach full capacity and efficiency.
      18.288m (60ft) * 3200m/h (2mph) = 58521m^2/h (14.46 acres/h)
      10.668m (35ft) * 8000m/h (5mph) = 85344m^2 (21.088 acres/h)
      The numbers in your example are a bit extreme though. In Mike Mitchell's video of 12 Aug 2020 you can see that he is going 3.6mph with a 50ft header using 83% engine power:
      15.24m (50ft)* 5760m/h (3.6mph) = 87782m^2/h (21.69acres/h)
      This is in high yielding crop, where the combines do not need to go fast to saturate their throughput, so a small header and a big one would have nearly the same performance, though the slower running combine would use less fuel per bushel crop harvested.
      To conclude: In high yielding crops you do win on efficiency and in low yielding crops you win on speed and efficiency when using the larger header.

    • @joshuadoll9000
      @joshuadoll9000 2 роки тому

      Larger headers are always superior because the combine harvests best when it is kept at maximum capacity and a larger header means it's easier to keep it at maximum capacity. Plus less passes over the field reduces compaction and overall saves on fuel. It is also much harder to sustain a higher field speed so you would be wasting harvest potential with a smaller header meaning you would always end up threshing more acres per hour with a larger header.
