The one and only Eric Cantona joins James for a very special career-spanning interview in which we explore the life and mind of an icon. No stone is left unturned as King Eric takes us through his early life and career, his thoughts on the state of the Western world, and everything in between | JOE.co.uk
The only Premier league footballer who literally tried to kick racism out of football. A fantastic player and an even better man. All hail King Eric.
I think Ian Wright said that as well.
I was 14 at the time and I remember Cantona getting so much flak for the 'seaguls and trawler' press conference and I never understood why. He made perfect sense.
EC is a legend.
Eric was far too intellectual for the English press. It's sad that the press couldn't see that Eric was mocking them and summing up the sad state of the situation and press conference. Pure genius, shame the players of today nod their heads and give the press what they want.
Have you seen his speech when picking up the UEFA President's award? It's even better.
I'm a Liverpool fan, and have massive respect for Eric Cantona as a human being.
@R R what are you talking about?
Same here man. Also LFC fan. Cantona is such an interesting man.
Et footballeur aussi !
I said I'll play this in the background and just listen while I work but no, I find myself watching every second... ALL HAIL KING ERIC! LEGEND. HERO. CITIZEN OF THE UNIVERSE.
Eric Cantona saying he isn't French he is from the universe is the most refreshing and wonderful thing I have herd in such a long time :) my idol :)
That's all well and good, however, we have to remember that there are plenty of other cultures that would love to take advantage of that friendliness and openness. It's not such a simple thing to achieve.
@@andypac7 I don’t think you get the point really,, basically everyone is equal no matter the culture, country, 🤷♂️
@@footballunitedtv8381 Quite the contrary.
He can say whatever he wants but he is the stereotype of guy born and raised in Marseille France !
@@Madkeusti what does that mean?
He's a soulful fellow, fascinating figure. Very very few of his ilk currently in football.
None*
Eric the King. can listen to him speak for days without ever getting bored.
i love this interview , James is brilliant . Im a big fan of Eric too , he has this aura about him
Liverpool supporter here but this guy is such an honest deep and respectful human being. There ..i said it.
At the time of the infamous Kung fu kick against the palace supporter, King Eric was one of the biggest names in football in the world and yet Eric decided to live in a normal 2-3 bed house in a normal street, living amongst normal people. I think that alone says a lot about the man. United Legend.
What an amazing human being! I am inspired and grateful to have had the chance to hear and learn from him here. Thank you!
Top video folks!
FullTimeDEVILS We need new full backs!!!😢😢 Both our full backs will be 33 next year!!
Passion, leads to work ethic, leads to improvement, leads to enjoying life. Crystal clear and you realise why he was such a great footballer.
NO surprise that Auxerre and Guy Roux did such a good job teaching Cantona about being a pro. Even as a Liverpool fan, I loved Cantona's swashbuckling style of play. Interesting that he seems more loved in England than in his native France.
His career in France never hit the heights it maybe should have, either ag club or national team level. Conversely, glenn hoddle is more appreciated in France than in England. All swings and roundabouts.
West Ham fan here. Always had a lot of time for Eric Le Grand. We need more existential footballers. "When you throw a beard on top of a rollerskate, it's because a partridge, has fallen off a rainbow"
K L No. He said something like...if the seagulls follow the trawler it is because they think the sardines will be thrown into the sea...metaphor for journalists searching for scraps of information.
@K L No it was Oscar Wilde.
Dude, can we be friends?
MATE, THAT'S DEEP...
Cantona has done plenty of interviews lately but this is the best one I've seen.
“CANTONAaaAaAaaaAaaa!” That’s the name I heard from the Football commentators screaming out loud when I was a kid.
You’ll always be my commissioner of Football!
On the 12th day of Christmas my true love sent to me:
12 Cantonas
11 Cantonas
10 Cantonas
9 Cantonas
8 Cantonas
7 Cantonas
6 Cantonas
5 CANTONAS
4 Cantonas
3 Cantonas
2 Cantonas
And an Eric Cantona!
What did I just sang to myself?! Hahahaha
Eric Cantona
So you're gay... that's ok
Mito-
I loved this. Such gravitas. He is his own man
He’s utterly wonderful. Nothing more to add.
Iv been traveling for 20 years and phones have taken most of the enjoyment out of it. He’s bang correct
I met and spoke to Eric . He has a certain presence about him . Very magnetic .
i met also and he talked for 10 mins to me and your right about his presence great on the pitch and great off the pitch a great man
Absolutely brilliant interview. Awesome. Eric is beautiful and you let him show us.
He loves England, We love Cantona
The King.
In the English dictionary the word "different" should have a picture of Eric's face next to it as the definition. A great player and a great man.
I listened with intrest as always to the enigma that is Eric Cantona. When Joe suggested to Eric that as a public figure he should be careful what he speaks about. In this instance politics. It is an urban gagging order put out by the powers to implant this into popular and public figures . They are affraid that people will get together and form opinions that go against the systems narrative . As Eric says ,public debate is important and very powerful and should be encouraged. What an outstanding human being , Eric Cantona .
👏🏽👏🏽Truth
Delightful and thoroughly entertaining.
Eric played his own game. I haven't seen anyone with his vision and technical ability since. He attempted things no other players would think of. The King!
This is a brilliant interview. And Cantona's view of rhe world is spot on.
Thanks John, pleased you enjoyed. Unfiltered is coming back for a 2nd series - subscribe here: playpodca.st/unfiltered
If Cantona says he will not die, Cantona will not die.
Corbyn therapist yeah but he was reborn
Corbyn therapist
Not quite, he was reborn as King.
We all will one day...
How fortunate are those that are born with a talent and a passion for something they can make a living from.
When Eric Says *Growing up had no millions, on days out we go anywhere get brothers, car, drive, sandwich, beach!* BTW Great Interview!
Absolute legend, best interview of 2017.
The man,the myth, the LEGEND! Weeee drink a drink a drink... ! A major reason why I became a United supporter. Look at him sipping on the wine, only Eric can do it like that.
Cantona would make a great leader imagine him being the french president.
I thought that was Ed Woodward doing the interview
Gary Casey no it’s the total no nothing toss pot that is James o Brien......
Great interview !
Iv only watched 1st 10 mins of this interview what a cracking interview and what a lovely man Eric is gunna finish this tomorrow. Brilliant
He represents basically my ideal man. Passionate, honest ,empathetic ,artistic, funny ,intelligent and not afraid to be himself stand up for his beliefs. Plus doesn’t hurt he’s so ridiculously attractive haha.
This guy was my hero as a kid, still my hero now
ONLY Manchester United treated every single player differently. Heard too much about it... Proud of it.
Eric is a lovely human being
Brilliant man!
Great to listen to King Eric, always. Even better to see O'Brien unable to bully Eric by trying to talk over him like he does when he belittles any one that dare disagree with his political views when he's hiding behind his Mic in his Lbc studio. He still tried to make his political point though. When Eric wouldn't let him talk over him his grimacing face is a joy to see.
Long live the King, the King will live forever.
@Mewltow You know O'Brien so well!Love Eric but O'Brien is unbearable.
Gone to find an Eric Cantona interview on a different channel....
Ps O'Brien's body language reveals his true nature. He needs help.
The King
He was the single most important signing by Alex Ferguson.
1 million quid and his attitude, and arrogance, permeated through that young team.
1 Paul Pogba or 120 Eric Cantonas??? Hmmm let me think.
Different times and transfer fees but I’d take 1 Cantona over 120 Pogba’s
listening to James Obrien Is like pulling teeth...he Is so cinge worthy
Fascinating character
Thank you Universe for giving United and the people who love the game football the gift of Eric Cantona and his imagination.
King
Fascinating human being
What an excellent interviewer, this is the most relaxed and enjoyable Cantona interview I have seen (and I think I have watched them all!). Good job James O'Brien, I still learned more about the most interesting person in football.
Eric the Great!
The Frenchman "England is unique"
The Englishman "In a bad way"
The Frenchman "NO!! In a good way"
The essence of the British relationship with Europe.
Interview with Roy Keane would be great! Go get him
This needs way more views
35 seconds and im already cracked up , one of a kind eric cantona
He's an inspiration to everyone
The world's greatest Frenchman.
ive just made the connection between him and Zidane. they both made mistakes during matches, but what makes them great is the courage to take risks, to be authentic, to be free.
Absolute artist! Absolute human!
He reminds me of Federer. 14 years old and had to make a choice to discover that . The passion and how crowds loved him. Despite what football team they supported.
Eric Cantona is soooo funny 😆
I named my son after him top man and a world class footballer
You named your kid God?
Eric
This book is a journey through your imagination. Where did the idea come from?
My imagination.
Hahah priceless. What a top fella.
One of the all time rock and roll footballers whether you supported Utd or not at the time, he was box office. Liam Gallagher got it as a Blue and put him in a video. Slapped a fan ffs lol, and played with his collar up and got away with it. Is into Art and literature and lived in a modest house when he was at Utd. A legend.
Eric the King
Legend...from a Forest fan
Reading the comments and I agree it's a great interview but what sets Cantona apart is that he was an incredibly talented football player, one who could practically win the league on his own. I'm a huge Roy Keane fan, and Keane learnt from the master. I support Liverpool by the way.
Brilliant interview 🥰
No bull s. Need more like eric.. 🏴💯
James did a great job in this interview
Brilliant footballer and brilliant actor!
Footballers are so boring today. No personalities.
So right.
I think largely because the British media are out to get them, a lot of the time. Who really cares what they get up to in their private lives, as long as no one gets hurt?
Legend.
This was a nice interview, but I really don't like when people interrupt Eric Cantona to change the topic.
Just for his comeback against Liverpool.
How many times did he pick up a glass and then not drink from it
Can only imagine how well Eric and Evra get along.
Eric Cantona is the closest thing England had to Mike Tyson- bizarre and fascinating guy
WTF Tyson is a Brutal Thug.?????????????
Tyson is a brutal thug, but also a shy, diffident, introspective dude. Think thats what Zee Man means. Cantona and Tyson are interesting characters with contradictions and complexities.
I think Chris Eubank is the closest thing England had to Mike Tyson.
@@WillHancock That is an insult to Mike!!!
Cantona is French though I'd definitely accept him as a Brit!
Eric cantona doesn’t worry about walking into trees the trees worry about him walking into them
What a friend we have in Jesus
He's our saviour from afar
What a friend we have in Jesus
And his name is Cantona...
According to Lee Sharpe, after the Simmons incident, back in the training complex, Fergie said to Eric, "You can't do things like that, Son."
The King nothing left to say
Sadaam was a great footballer, and Cantona was a vicious Tyrant somewhere else in the Multiverse.
Long live the King.
Eric so right about borders. They have been arbitrarily set up over time. Don't mean anything really but some people put so much importance in them.
Never a real fan of Eric as a player because I love Liverpool but always grudgingly respected him because he lived in a normal semi detached house whilst playing football and did not flaunt his wealth. Remember seeing him lose in semi final against Dortmund and the impression I got at final whistle was that was when I decided to retire.
In this time of instant celebrity and narcissism. It is impossible for a character and personality like Cantonas to exist in football.
Everything is a means to an end. Every celebration is a commercial opportunity. Every move, transfer is calculated and tabulated.
Nothing is allowed just to exist for the sake of existence.
I really enjoyed hearing Eric speak, however, thought the interviewer was quite meek in that he tried to agree on everything Eric said and didn't really challenge him at all. I like many of Joe's other interviews, but here I just think he tried to please the guest and fell out of is own identity rather than just be himself and expand on the moment as it was spoke. Would loved to have heard some of Eric's travelling tales.
Great player
The point he made about he had to be like teatotal makes sense he loved the game back then players cld have a drink not now he liked his wine. I think it's harder for players now to even have a drink plus ur scrutinized more than back in the 90"s . It's all consuming football so I can understand why he retired at 30
Oooh ahhhh....
13.10-13.30 most important lesson for young players
James O’Brien is a complete bellend
Its true about ben arfa and benzema for the french national team because we so orgins of africa in the english side we see eden hazard and lukaku make the european side of belgian and even pogba and matudi in the french team ben arfa is a very good footballer
Cantona is the only guy who can carry off a unibrow
❤️
Fran lebovich was right.
Is nothing more contagious than a bad old idea.
Ok so here’s an idea for a game just to see what people think.
Instead of electing politicians into leadership positions, let’s put our nations favourite footballers in charge. So we could have:
GB - Lineaker
FR - Cantona
NL - Cruyff
DE - Beckenbaur
IT - Pier Luigi Collina
IR - Roy Keane (you know it makes sense)
UK - Savchenko
AR - Maradonna(?) anyone but Ardilles
BR - Pele
After that I’m struggling, any suggestions?
Lineker couldn't run a crisp factory.
Gary lineker is a twat
Hes compelling to listen to. Very wise and thoughtful. Used to think he just talked a lot of rubbish!
