1947 Earth was India’s official entry for the Academy Awards (Oscars) in the Best Foreign Language Film category. (Directed by Deepa Mehta, its cast included Aamir Khan, Nandita Das, Rahul Khanna, Shabana Azmi)
Warriors of Heaven and Earth was China’s official entry for the Academy Awards (Oscars) in the Best Foreign Language Film category. Directed by He Ping, its music was composed by AR Rahman. Besides instrumental tracks, it had only one song that was sung by queen of Chinese pop - Jolin Tsai. Sandhana Sargam sang this song in Hindi
Water - was nominated for an Oscar, in the category of Best Film in Foreign Language. (Water - the 3rd and final installment of the elements trilogy by Deepa Mehta. Its cast included Lisa Ray, John Abraham, Seema Biswas, Waheeda Rahman).
Sadhana Sargam goes back in time and recalls stories behind above songs. She goes on to share her experience with Ilaiyaraaja - another legend of film music.

For me personally, The all time favourite song Sadhana Ji has Sung for Rahman sir has to be "Naina Neer Bahaye" from "Water"....and I am eagerly waiting for the next song Of Sadhana Ji with AR Rahman!!! "Konjum mainakkalee.." from the tamil movie kandukondain kandukondain is top in the list of my favorite songs of sadhana ji. The song was filmed in an agricultural farm of our villege (Dhoni-palakkad) in kerala. Being in the valley of western ghats, we could here the peacocks 🦚 all the time. I get the same feeling whenever I listen to the song in sadhana ji s voice. Those who haven't, its your time to listen to it.. love 😍 ..!
Definitely one of the major hit songs in their combo which many upcoming singers sing in music contests even today. Also, the way Rahman merges various interludes in this peppy song is simply outstanding! The picturising with Aishwarya Rai and her grace too is praiseworthy here.

By far the best episode as Sadhana sings two of her iconic songs and what pitch perfection ! When she sang, I did not miss the instrumental pieces at all. Her rendition was complete ! Gifted artist ! My favourite song that Sadhana Sargam ji has sung for AR Rahman is “Swasame” from Thenali. The chorus part is an integral part of the song. I am curious to know how this song was recorded? Was the chorus already sung or did ma’am just sing her part first? If it’s the latter then I would like to know how she felt when she heard the final output! 😊

My favourite song of Sadhanaji for Rehman Saab is “Snehithane” from Alaipayuthe. That’s Tamil version of “Chupke se”. I really wished she won National Award for that song. 🙏🏼

There are many wonderful songs to which Sadhana Sargam ji has lent her soulful voice to our A R Rahman's composition. I would like to mention here a special song which is wonderful yet underated in tamil- "udhaya udhaya ularugiraen" which seems easy to sing when listening to, but it's hard to sing this part " ennai tholaithuviitaen ....... " i wonder how beautifully she has sung this part. Also " Aayo re Sakhi" from water. Sadhana ma'am wish you entertain us more your divine voice.

Sadhana ji I have been one of your biggest admirers all through my growing up years in the 90s till today. Everytime I listen to you, there is another calmness I experience all thanks to your well polished voice and beautiful personality. You are one of the rare singers who never goes shrill and maintains a rounded texture in your high notes which I admire. About your songs with Rahman sir, there are plenty which are awesome. Sadhana Sargam has sung soo many songs in Tamil and at one point (between 2000-2010) every film/every other film had atleast one song by Sadhana ji..... she has sung several other gems for ARR like kalayil dhinamum, swasame, gala gala vendru, nenje nenje, spider man, udhaya udhaya....etc all of these were Big chartbusters (these songs didnt have Hindi version btw)

I am from Pakistan and I love Sadhana Sargam Ji's voice. I wud say Rahman's some of the best creations have been with Sadhana ji...the magnitude of songs and compositions prove that he loved her voice and experimented it with innumerable styles and genres.
In Hindi, my favourite song by Sadhana ji and Rahman wud be "Naina Neer" from Water...the way she has grasped the nuances of Raga Bhatiyar is impeccable!
And in Tamizh, it has to be "Azhage Sugama" from Paarthale Paravasam...it such a sweet composition...and the way she's sung it...like Honey into my ears😍

Rahman sir is an expert in Indian and western classical and any other genres of music, especially classical. His uses of ragas are beyond our imagination. Pls, do not ask such questions that he is not formally trained, etc. Now it doesn't matter whether he is trained or not. I can give you lots of examples of how he uses Indian classical beautifully in his composition. He is a Maestro. 🙏
Yea, even I find this question a bit strange. Perhaps they are testing the classical music knowledge of singers. Otherwise, why would such a doubt arise when without any musical knowledge we as a listener can easily understand how much classical base many of his songs have including his fast paced numbers here not just melodies only. Just listening to them cleanses you so much and if not for classical music which other form of music can have that power and range to heal you from deep within!

@@O2india Ofcourse, I checked your reply and even I replied to him on your behalf first but only couldn't confirm it. Of course, I wouldn't dare to say your questions are to doubt Rahman's talent but in a way it's a quest to know what the guest singers are feeling about his classical touch in music. But somehow at certain times, it doesn't seem that way on the surface despite the right intention from your side and so I feel viewers like SD have expressed such a doubt.
Another thing also I want to clarify here is that to become a composer one need not be particularly trained in any one form of music. It's just the passion and observation of the notes in music which certain geniuses can grasp is what makes them a composer.
To support the above argument, I have 2 examples or 2 ways to put this in perspective. Firstly, it's well known in South that singers like SPB are not formally trained in music but it is unbelievable when he not only sings such difficult songs but even had composed few films in his career. I wouldn't say it is exactly the same with Rahman as I heard he learnt new forms of music even after becoming world famous music director. And the second case is where there are so many classically trained musicians and singers who aren't be composers as it's a different ball game altogether.
So, formally trained or not music comes from within and that's what segregated a composer from a person who merely learnt music. It's a God gift that they acquire at birth and blessings that geniuses like Rahman, SPB had since their childhood. Their music is very much in their consciousness and has nothing much to do with the training they receive. Trained even if they are is just a means for these talented wizards and not the all of everything!

Anbe from Rhythm is my most favorite of her ARR songs. The initial phrases portion of this song and Swasame are a delight in her voice.

I'm a huge fan of Sadhana Sargam. Among her songs with AR Rahman my favourite one is 'Udhaya Udhaya' which is one of his most intricate compositions, he has also admitted in a show that he liked challenging Sadhanaji and Hariji and that they always delivered beyond his expectations. This song is still a popular choice for young singers who want to master it to prove their prowess. Although all of their songs are good like Swasame, Vennilave, Snehithane, Nenje Nenje( phenomenal vocals and range) this song definitely stands out for its complexity and absolute vocal mastery of Sadhana Sargam and Hariharan. I'm curious as to know how this song was recorded and perfected.
Yes, Nenje Nenje from Rachagan which she sang with Yesudas. Thanks bro for remembering the song here. I wish the interviewer could have asked her about that song as it’s one of the most beautiful songs she sang for ARR. Also, given that she sang with the legend as her co singer. Donno why many ppl don’t even remember this song so much I feel perhaps because the movie is such a disaster but then ppl remember Chanda re from Sapnay which is even more horrible movie. I love other songs from the album too but donno if this came before or after Sapnay but it is surely one of their initial gems from the golden 90s period.

In my point of view the best song sadhana ji sang for A.R.Rahman was "Azhage Sugama" from Tamil movie Parthale paravasam. Though my all time fav of Sadhana - Arr’s combo is Snehituda (chipke se), there are other songs too like the one from Warriors of Heaven and Earth which I didn’t know was originally sung by a chinese singer. But I felt Sadhana voice is different than usual here and the song too is something else. Yet the Saathiya song is like the Roja song for Sadhana sargam. The song always feels intensely special and haunting. Also, the combo of Arr-Sadhana is one of the best music director and singers combos for me personally as her voice suits his compositions to the tee even than other big singers of the industry.
However, I didn’t get what the surprise part here is. So, towards the end I felt the surprise as the next episode is coming up fresh with a choreographer for the first time. I also hope we get to hear what Prabhu deva has to say as Rahman’s contribution is huge for his stupendous success as a dancer cum choreographer. There are biggest hits in their combo like no other choreographer.
Coming back to the interview, every word she said about Rahman is verily true. No words for that again. I also didn’t get why Swades is shown as the albums in their combo as I remember Sadhana hasn’t sung any in that movie. It was Madhusree who sang pal pal hai bhaari and not Sadhana incase if there’s a confusion here. Madhusree’s voice too sounds very much like both Sadhana and Alka put together as she’s little high pitched than Sadhana. However, I love Sadhana voice more in comparison. Also she had no other option than to diplomatically divide her fondness between both legends Arr and Ilayaraja. May be she’s not diplomatic here i guess!
