That look on J None's face as the song ends, never fails to get me in the feels!

I think that Geoff’s part was scaled way back to allow the three of them who can hit the tenor range to really shine and support J since this was a bit of a farewell song.
I believe they recorded Best Friend around the same time. But his suits his leave-taking so well that I think of it as as his farewell song.
J, like all of Voiceplay, has a tremendous range. Here he’s up in the rafters with Eli and DJ, but he’s recently been reassigned to the East Coast - as a bass! I think we’re all hoping that will get to see more of him since he won’t have to travel all the way from Washington.

J started his navy career with the Navy band Northwest Passage, but has now been promoted to sing with the Washington based Sea Chanters as a bass singer..He's actually officially a baritone with a wide range. As you say this was his farewell performance though they had also recorded You're My Best Friend the same day.

Fun fact: although this was the last one released with J as a member, it wasn’t the last recorded. After this, they went on what would become Pattycake’s Haunted Mansion set and recorded You’re my Best Friend. But that one was released first.
Best Friend also had Eli, J and Deejay. And (I believe you’ve done it already) Bang did also. *the one with the trio run that J wrote for it*.

Always love your VP reactions. They are the highlight of my UA-cam watching week.
The first time I heard this one I found the ‘hot potato’ section a little to much for my AuDHD brain to handle. It felt more like the tenors were competing with each other. But after I had watched several reacters breaking it down and pointing out different thing, I found it more enjoyable to listen to.

Vocal types/ranges for men: Bass (Geoff's a mutant and can do whatever), baritone is a mid voice (what Geoff technically is), high baritone is what J None and Eli are (and what Geoff can do if he wants to show off), tenor is the high voiced men like Deejay...and then there are counter tenors like Mitch from Pentatonix and Dimash.

I've never been a fan of MJ - I'm a "rock chick" after all! 😆- but I do like this by VP. A perfect finale before J None went off to join the Navy. His face at the end always gets me.
You mentioned Geoff and Layne being tall compared to the others - I believe, and I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, that Geoff is about 5ft 11 and Layne 6ft 1 so not super tall (not compared to some of the guys I've been around for a lot of my life anyway!) but maybe a bit above average? No idea what is classed as average height these days 🤷‍♀

Funny, I noticed that Geoff, and Laine were normal hight, the rest are really short. Lol

This one is really a gut punch, as a goodbye to JNone (at least as a permanent member of the group). And, yes, this one really wasn't Geoff's song, it was for JNone in particular, but also Eli and DeeJay

Ok babe, short, very basic male voice naming:
Tenor 1 (really high. DJ in this one is singing in tenor 1. Earl was a very very good tenor 1)
Tenor 2 (still high, but less stratosphere. I hear a lot of Cesar’s high stuff in this range) Eli is a tenor for all occasions and regularly fluctuates between these 2
Baritone 1: lovely mid range (Layne is likely a bari 1)
Baritone 2: J and Cesar are both bari 2 in natural range. Geoff also says he is a natural baritone, but I’d guess bari 2 instead of 1
    Bass: Geoff.
There are a lot of more specific terms like altino and basso profundo, but I’m not trained formally and don’t have the full vocabulary lol.

Yeah, I would bet good money that Geoff took himself out of the limelight on purpose for J’s send off.

Of course I'd heard Michael Jackson's original but apart from the chorus, I'd never clearly heard the lyrics. Voiceplay's slower rendition and clear diction not only set it apart from the original but - please don't hate me for this - I prefer their cover of it. I think Geoff's section only felt out of place just 'cuz it's unexpected - the original was all in the late Michael Jackson's tenor.

Preferring Voiceplay's cover over the original is more a rule than it is an exception.

_Winces at __5:29__. Ouch_ No surprise really that the higher stuff hits a little closer to the mark here, though. The song was written for Michael Jackson, after all. This is a contender for my favorite pre-Cesar number of theirs...it's neck-and-neck with the Moana Medley, with Queen In 5 Minutes and Carry On Wayward Son close behind.
