The Himalayas are the fuel to many types of fire: adventure travel, hiking, paragliding, commercial 'hill-stations' with luxury hotels, or the simple get away from the city be able to read a book in peace and see a village vacation.
RAMGARH exactly fits the bill for the last bit. This is where you go to just get away. And to be in the green hills with your book. And just completely unwind. There're various very nice properties to choose from.. there's Neemrana's bungalows, Seclude Arthouse, Seclude (regular) and so on.
We chose to stay at Neemrana's Ramgarh Bungalows.
Neemrana's Ramgarh Bungalows were procured by the Neemrana Hotels group in 1994. They were actually built by the British. It was at that time that all the fruit trees were grown at Ramgarh for the first time. Today, Ramgarh is essentially a fruit-grower's town. It is on the way to bigger tourist attractions like Mukteshwar, and only 15 kms away from the now bustling town of Bhowali. It is also quite close from Nainital, the biggest concrete jungle hill station this side of the Himalayas.
There's a lot of history about the Ramgarh Bungalows, and it is explained quite well by Mr. Shailendra Dhaila and Mr. Anand in the video. The take you through the various bungalows: Dak Bungalow (now called The Old Bungalow), Clliff Villa, Ashok Vatika, and the Writer's Bungalow. Most of the eminent personalities like Rabindranath Tagore (with his daughter) have stayed here at the Ramgarh Bungalows for extended periods of time. Do watch the full video to know more.
Getting here is easy:
1. Take a train from Delhi to Kathgodam. (about 6 hours journey)
2. Take a bus/cab from Kathgodam to Ramgarh. (about 2.5 hours journey)
Best time to visit Ramgarh: Around May-July. That is when most fruit trees blossom.
Winters in Ramgarh Uttarakhand are cold, with some snow around December or January.
And that's it. If you want one of the easiest, yet most rewarding Himalayan trips, Ramgarh will not disappoint. You have just enough civilisation that you won't have any FOMO, and just enough history, with just enough nature.
And did I mention the fresh fruit jams and fresh fruit juices made at the hotel by fruits grown at the property at breakfast?
