Thanks so much, Taria. I've found your videos incredibly helpful. I really love your style of explaining and demonstrating and offering practical tips. I'm just starting out with urban sketching. I've always wanted to try it, but found it daunting (particularly getting the perspective just right). Your videos really helped me to take the plunge. I've ordered your book and am looking forward to going through that as well.

I’ve finally found tutorials with the style I seem to veer towards. FINALLY! I love the effects of loose watercolours and I ALWAYS ink them. Like you say, even just here and there, roughly, still has an effect on the eye.
Also, I do feel I have patience but I get bored of spending too long on a piece.
Thank you for taking the time to put these videos and sharing your knowledge together. Best wishes xx

I’m definitely guilty of overthinking! I totally wish I could get loser! It’s kind of like trying to be random when selecting fabrics when I design a quilt. It’s a lot harder for me as well. I love how your stone color turned out and the whole sketch a painting is awesome!

The pen looks great. I no longer use Amazon. If I find something I want there I go directly to the company to make the purchase. I bought a pen I really liked at a bookstore/library/gift shop. Because it was a local place I got some unique finds that were one of a kind and others were regional. Support your neighbors!

Wow, this is one of the most helpful urban sketching videos I've watched. Excellent tips, very well explained and demonstrated. Thank you. Subscribed!
I'm just getting used to Sailor Fude with the Carbon Ink. The ink is excellent, but the Fude nib takes a lot of getting used to, so often use a Lamy Safari instead. Maybe I need to be more loose with it.
To be honest, I'm not a big fan of the splattering, although it can work in some scenes.

Loved the demo. I will grab a bottle of the Platinum Carbon ink. It's about $18 USD. My 8 pack of Faber Castel Artist Pitt Pens w waterproof india ink was same price. I bet the bottle will outlast the ink in all 8 Pitt Pens, together. Most sets of good waterproof pens are around the same price. No where near as much ink. The value is there. I am building up a collection of fountain pens with various nib ✒ sizes. The bottle could ink a lot of pens for quite a while.

I trust you fed the cat..... I bought a Fude pen recently, and have been nervous about using permanent ink with it, but I assume that if you use it regularly, or wash it out if you know you're not going to be using it for some time, all should be well with the Platinum Carbon ink. I do have FW inks, and Kandahar - but I don't think I'd want to trust them in a fountain pen, seeing what the Kandahar, especially, does to my dip pens.

What paints are you using? Thanks!
Funny story, I recommended someone on the Urban Sketching Facebook group to use a photo when they couldn't setup pleinair. They scolded me! Said it wouldn't be REAL urban sketching if I used a photo. So I left the group LOL!

I am mainly using my St Petersburg White Nights set by do also have another set there with some W&N and Daniel Smith paints.
Yes, unfortunately sometimes people can be a bit funny about the term "urban sketching". We ALL know it means sketching from life and on location. But for a variety of reasons sometimes people sketch from photos...and yes it should not be called urban sketching technically, but you are practicing skills that would be utilised in USK. People get far too hung up on labels. I have also had comments about it here on this channel - but I am just trying to demo stuff that people can ry out to then take out in the field. I think practicing and experimenting at home is fundamental to pushing your skills forward. I don't blame you for leaving the group! People are weird sometimes! ;)

After watching pretty much all your videos I broke down and purchased the Twsbi Eco fountain pen with extra fine nib and the platinum black carbon ink. I frigging LOVE IT! My first fountain pen and I have no desire to try any others and that ink...it's perfect! I've been enjoying my pen for every day writing as well as sketching.

I just got this pen and was wondering if you could put the platinum carbon ink you've talked about in it so now I know you can. I still don't know how to fill it thought. I would love to see how you do it, messy or not.

    • @tarias_sketchy_adventures
      @tarias_sketchy_adventures  3 роки тому

Hi Trish - ah I shouldn't have cut that part out then. I shall try and film it more clearly. Put the converter in the pen make sure the plunger bit is screwed all the way down (so its near the nib), put the nib into the pot of ink. The platinum carbon ink bottle has a container inside so it helps you put the pen in the bottle (but not too far). I got the bent part of my nib caught inside though, so be careful not to push down on it too much (in my defense, that's never happened before!) - then just screw the end of the converter so it starts drawing the ink up inside. Take the pen out, wipe it off gently and do some test line on scrap paper. When you first fill it, it can be quite "juicy" to use, i.e. lots of ink comes out but it will settle down as you use it. Hope this helps a bit!

I'm catching up on two months of content... congrats on having over 51k subscribers, Taria. Yay! I subbed back in the early 400's... how time flys :)
Great to see you cracking out the Fude pen. I'm still practicing with the green one, and love it for the same reasons, and have the blue one for calligraphic writing which is awesome (too lazy to check the Fude pen nib angles, lol). It is a learning curve, or muscle memory game, to use the Fude to its full potential... But that might just be me.
Gorgeous Sketching, as always. I've bought Platinum Carbon ink on your recommendation, but haven't used it yet as I'm using up the supplied cartridges for practice purposes. The supplied cartridge ink isn't light fast. For me no problem, but I'm sure others would prefer to ditch them and go for light fast Platinum Carbon.

Everything you mention in this video, I’m struggling with all of them! 😅 the painting by colors is exactly what I’m still doing and I really want to get out of that habit. Every time I make a mental note to paint loosely, I still find myself feeling so incomplete and having the need to color in every corner of the paper 🤦🏻‍♀️ Splatters are seriously harder than it looks. Who would have thought! Lol

"Fude" means brush - it refers to the nib being bent at an angle (did you see it in the footage?) and it means you can get various line weights depending at what angle you use it....
