I definitely recall five or six characters' deaths throughout the years.
1.) The first ever character death that happened was truly heartbreaking. The setting was in a death swamp after our group was hired to investigate the missing duke's heir, I was an Alchemist Armorer in this small mystery campaign. Due to how poisonous the landscape has become, I had to scout to gather intel in my colossus armor. The dice gods were cruel as the details of exploration became grim. By the time I got to a broken bridge, it was already to late when two black dragons ambushed me. I rolled three ones during the encounter, causing the dragons to rip apart the mechanical limbs and tare the cockpit up. The death blow came after getting pinned on a dead tree trunk the younger as it poured acid inside my suit... once it was done, the acid shortly after poured out of the armor to reveal the whole skeleton fully dissolved.

That’s gruesome, I love it!!! I am sorry it happened but what a way to go. How did it impact your party after they found out?

Once three days passed without word, they sent in our shape shifter to disguise as a native snake to find me, only to realize the truth the the black dragon that killed me used my melted down armor as it's... um.. plaything.. she was nearly caught by the other, but luckily, by the dice gods, another predator of equal dangers alerted the dragons. Once she returned a town meeting was conducted. Once the truth of two highly dangerous black dragons was spoken of, the simple folks panic for a nightmare was already so close, and our party smartly wanted to avoid this encounter due to them having more familiarity with this deathly forest. With very little options, they had to evacuate the citizens away from the dragons hunting grounds to where they would normally be during rough winters. This small campaign little we knew was also being added to the next big campaign since that adventuring group didn't know that the side villain created a foul concoction that drew those dragons to that forest. So my character death didn't get avenged until five years later during a siege campaign.

once the three days past they sent our shape shifter to find me. Her guise was a known native snake with a very unique movement that made traversing vastly easier but also more suseptible to it. Once she found the armor and myself, she already knew since her background was infact a black dragon on a killing spree. Now armed with this knowledge they had to move over 400 people away from the newly made hunting grounds. Our dm however had other ideas since we really couldn't fight two black dragons but rather our antagonist was the terrain to move many to where they'd go for rough winters. My character wasn't avenged until five years later when a siege campaign came.

Me personally while I've never experienced a character death for me it's a chance of opportunity for something new others might have a different opinion but that's how i see character death

It is crushing for me when my characters die. Like I really really try and put a huge effort into it. So for me it’s crushing but after I deal with the loss i do always get super pumped about how exciting it is to be a new character.

If your PLAYERS are dying in your D&D campaign maybe you need to amp it down a bit

In my personal campaign it wasn’t the result of combat that killed my players character, but a bad decision made by the character. I agree that if combats are killing your players yes absolutely turn it down. I also disagree with traps insta killing pc’s.
Combats can be deadly and challenging, though you have to limit them to one per day cus an entire dungeon full of deadly encounters will kill any party. Thats always been how I run them, at least. But they have to be limited.

hi! could you do a video on how you might run having an npc crew for your players ? my players own a pirate ship that's usually just in port, but they have been hiring bandits that they talked out of fights, paying them more than they were making before, and have them as helping hands. i came up with a system where they can choose what each guy they hire is good at, and then the d20 value will show how good they are (or aren't). it's working well and my players are enjoying interacting with their new and expanding crew, but is there anything you would add or maybe your thoughts on how to make it work better? a reply or video would be awesome! thank u love the videos🎉

Thank you I’d love to help any way i can. So there really isn’t enough information out there for this kind of development. What I would definitely stay away from is having them procure any items for the party beyond normal items. Like tools or rope or stuff like that.
You kinda need to run it like a town. You need a Captain and a 1st mate so you can give orders to the crew through them. That way you’re not needing to have the whole crew individually voiced.
There all bandits or ex criminals that dosent mean they don’t still have the same habits. You could have them picking up certain information from drinking in taverns and the like. Thus becoming a big information gathering tool.
Beyond those what does the party plan to use them for? Is it a sea fairing campaign where your using the ship regularly? Because then you could opt to train some to board a ship when it’s time to fight pirates, or are the party them selves pirates.
A little more information about the party’s intentions would better direct your needs with the boat.

@ okay so i already have my two players as the captain and first mate, and at the start of each session i will have all the crew ask "hey what are we doing for the day?" so they can go off and do background stuff while my players adventure. the closest i have to getting them things is they have a merchant who they give stolen goods to make a profit on, is that too far or should i balance it somehow?
we do sail the ship occasionally to move from location to another, because i run an open sandbox homebrew, so my players know the ultimate goal and i'm keeping track of their progress towards it but session to session is usually picking up immediately where we left off and continuing the story like that with their consequences leading to further story beats. so there is sometimes sea battles and open sea skirmishes but the ship mostly functions as a home base or bastion for my players. they use the gold they have been earning to upgrade or repair the ship, as well as paying the crew.
they did have the crew fire from the boat with rifles when they got into a fight at port once, should i have them hire specific gaurds for that type of thing or is it okay to let them use their normal crew for that?

    • @TheSinisterheroes
      @TheSinisterheroes  Місяць тому

@ you can absolutely have the crew pick up rifles and fire with out being guards.
If it’s there home base then essentially what you want is any gold they make to pay the gone tax the crew and the repairs. It’s a great way to keep them moving. To feed there ship. A great thing for you is as a dm when they get enemies they can board the ship or be new crewmen and sabotage them which is pretty exciting depending on who they make enemies with.
The major thing to watch for is if the money makes them two strong in the world. It’s a sandbox so then could do just about anything, getting a super armored ship and the best cannons possible and having wizards enchant them and the like sounds like a good use of gold, but on the sea they maybe too strong for anyone to combat there control you know?
I like the mind set of don’t take away cus that’s not fun, but make sure there is a good reason for them to spend there gold not on themselves (the party).
As long as there not making a huge profit to be honest I see no issues what so ever with what you got going.
