This is the first time Ive ever heard Kai actually speak cantonese.
Get a real phone with NFC and boom.. Super quick connection
Better yet get a real camera. No connection required.
Sony's quirky QX100 is a lens/sensor only, which connects to your phone wirelessly to take photos. What uses do you think that would be good for? Watch the DRTV review to find out how they used it: Sony QX100 Hands-on Review
better with android..
Would be awesome if you guys could run a test with this connected (hopefully) to an Android phone!
i dont want to blame iphone.. but android performs better.
Wifi connectivity problem i guess
What a stupid..camera..lens..thingy..
Works better with Android, I use it with my Sony Xperia Z3 mobile phone, it is so smooth and no lag. because it works with NFC+Bluetooth perfectly.
Ehsan Hi I have been looking into this but it says it only works for android 2.3 to 4.3 but my Z3 is 4.4.4. What's your version please? I'm worried it won't work with mine
bethany whitfield I have the Z3 with 4.4.4, the QX30 works great for me.
bethany whitfield it works with android lilipop also, it is much faster on lilipop! just update your system and see :)
+Kevin Zhang OPO doesn't have NFC
"Apple is good"
"ohh its not working" XD Made my day
Nice, honest review as always... I frequently look to your videos to keep me up to speed on what's going on in image making... much appreciated.
I owned a QX100 and I have been extremely happy with it. The picture quality is superb compared to the photos I took with my Nikon D5100. To be fair with Sony, I didn't experience any annoying disconnections. The firmware version of my QX100 is version 3.0.
Is this camera only for photography or can you film as well? Also, did you experience as many problems as the guy in this video did? Thinking on buying one
Yes, I can do video. I didn't experience any annoying disconnection. F1.8 widest aperture. You can do aperture priority and shutter speed priority modes.
Nah you’re just lying to be a fad boy or you’re just a garbage photographer. Also useless with the app discontinued.
@@kishascape my comment was 6 years ago. Direct your stupid frustration to Sony why they discontinued the app.
Love this guy. He makes technology so fun and funny. Love how he's delicately raunchy. And cute, too.
Really think sony jumped the gun with this. Today this would be a much better idea; better screens on phones, better connectivity options, better processing power in both cameras and phones.
So much of the frustration in this video would be eliminated these days
Actually no it wouldn’t since the screens were just as fine back then and that wasn’t even the issue and none of the other stuff changed today. You’re just a delusional overindulgent fad infant.
Btw this would do worse today with minimalist aesthetics more popular now and better and multiple cameras being integrated into one phone.
@KishaScape Except that smartphone cameras still don't excel well in optical zooming.
It's 2021 and I still want one of these things
Dude ... The NFC feature is just used to connect it quickly to wifi without having to go through the phone settings and then the wifi menu to pair it ...
I got one, and it's the envy of my co-workers :D. They're like "What is that? I want one!"
I love it, it's great to have a more competent camera on the go than relying on my iPhone which I really don't like for pictures. I took a picture in work of a snowman display made out of soda cans, and one of the guys took a picture with his iPhone, we compared shots and mine looked drastically better, and he was blown away by the quality.
I have to say, after getting the firmware update for the QX lens, it works a lot smoother and now and supports 1920x1080p as oppose to 1440x1080p.
But the smart lens makes sense, and if you have a tablet it's even better for showing videos and photos. It's a brilliant little device, despite it being $400
Just shows how Apple don't like connecting to anything but Apple.
+WiseGuy02 They're a bunch of inbred arrogant people
This isn't phone fault. He takes camera far and it loses connection. This camera was made to attach with mobile not to hold it in other hand.
Kanotaw Clearly you're an Apple fanboy trying to damage control something that's clearly a problem. You don't make a product so that it disconnects if you put it 30cm away from the device. Even bluetooth can do ~10meters (some variants even more) with no obstacles in between the connected devices.
@@hassanshykk it disconnected attached right to the phone.
It's a cool idea, but it looks like Sony screwed it up. Guess that's what happens when you have 50 product lines!
The reason it's not working is because it's not compatible with the iPhone, you need a phone with nfc capabilities which most droids have.
NFC is only a shortcut for the phone to open the app and automatically pair with the lens. However, pairing is done through WiFi from the lens on either ios or android. iPhones do work with these lenses.
iPhones do work with these lenses BUT iPhones does not have NFC so first time you connect them you have to manually connect go into settings (wifi) and find it, enter the password hidden inside the camera lens battery lid.
then all you need to do is to open up the "PlayMemories Mobile" app (free) and it should find your camera lens as long as your lens is powered on.
how do i know this? because i tried it with my sisters iPhone 4 in the end on january!! just make sure you have the latest version of the app.
Dudeius Mannigast disma
Looks awesome, Sony is always on the edge, doing nice products.
too bad he used an icrap.
Haha
icrap lol
iladie
Anoother piece of shit who cant afford iphone hahaha
Mp A Pacurib
fyi my phone was more expensive than an iphone.
also, pricetags aren't whatsoever a sign of quality.
Awesome demonstration of the stability of the phone software.
"apple's good" (thumbs up) "uh, it stopped working"
Amazing review, you are not just always talking about the tech but you also make little jokes and I love your reviews :D
i think making a review on iphone was a big mistake, instead maybe a sony xperia phone. just to see how it works with their own phones
Hey Digital Rev! Huge fan. I was hoping you guys could make a review on the Sony DSC- HX300? I just got this camera for my birthday and I haven't found many helpful videos, and I know how good you guys are with reviews!
Finally Kai speaking Cantonese
Haha i love it (y)
I don't even want one, but it's fun watching you struggle with it! Keep up the good work. Great honest reviews!
Why not try to connect it on a Sony Smartphone like Sony Z5P rather than saying its a piece of a shit...Sony user here and so far no problem with it... and im planning to buy qx100.. :(
because it's built for smartphones, not specifically only sony
the only requirement is that you have the sony play app
I have this and it's a great tool! There's just something special about trying to get the shot without any PP and going with the flow. I've found exchanging the photos through text and Facebook was fun. I hate doing that sort of thing but this makes it worth doing.
"Let's reconnect somewhere else. Piece of shit" lmfao
One of the best videos in a while, great work, guys!

@@Fire0101011 Still worth paying for? Playmemories app changed and now it's imaging edge as I see, how does it performs?
@@RafetK well, i had QX10 performs good even with the new interface!
NFC is not used for high speed data transfer. It is only used to initiate/pair devices. Once it's paired, it uses wifi.
The Sweet Shop analogy was brilliant. - 7:21. I can see it as being one of the philosophical greats.
Cant say if the product is good or bad based on this review. I can say the review is quite bad. Since the start this guy shows he doesnt like the product, and it does nothing to be objective. I only watched 5 minutes, and couldnt stand it anymore.
Tried this a few weeks ago with an S4, it's excellent for any street photography.
You should've connected via NFC... Ops! iPhone being iPhone ;)
things changed buddy
Iseo Junior yeah, but you still cant connect via NFC because Apple is THAT controlling.
Iseo Junior did iphone 6 get nfc? if so they finally added technology phones had in 2008
Rusty Nugget it did, but only for paying 👎
I've got the Q10 lens with the xperia z1 and I love it . Can take a while to connect though which is a bit annoying but it's really handy
You sound EXACTLY like James May
Man I love this new VP9 codec youtube is starting to implement.
terrible
@@KandiKlover Lol. VP9 is now being phased out. AV1 is gonna rule the web now. Better be sure your new devices have hardware acceleration for it. If not you gonna burn battery.
your iphone dont have nfc...that why sux..
It's 2015 now. Sony has released a few updates since this review which fixed the crashing and connection issues on iOS devices, as well as added aditional functionality to allow better control over the shooting settings.
1st off Appel sucks. And that lens was built for the Sony Xperia z1s
NFC is just a tool used to make connections faster. E.G you don't have to go into menu's to type in wifi passwords etc. NFC is NOT a separate wireless protocol. It still uses wifi (and bluetooth?) to make connections. So it's still just as sensitive to disconnecting if the wifi connection is flaky.
Besides, when you're using the regular way to connect through wifi, you only have to enter password once, after which your device will remember and automatically connect anyway.
That's why I hate iphone!
I love the "word up" look on Alamby's face in Kai's photo.
Great review! Judging how annoyed I was watching you have to deal with the thing, I could only imagine how frustrating it would be using it myself. I'll wait for the next version!
Kai interacting with the old folks and speaking canto hahaha so cute
"Apple's good" - "Now its not working."
LOL!
NFC is only for it to pair with the phone and not to maintain a connection. It is the same concept as samsung's nx series cameras with nfc. The data is transferred through wifi which has more bandwidth.
lol, the part with the elderly people SO interested in the product put a huge smile on my face xD
no. nfc is used for pairing only. it still works through wifi. but that wifi is not based on the speed of your connection.
having used one of these, I found the connection spotty at best. This will not replace a compact for anyone who's actually tried one.
Kai speaks Cantonese!! OMG! And he said "Sony" in Cantonese accent! There's always a first time. LOL.
Hmm.. never thought about using it for underskirt shots. Now I know what the designer had in mind when he came up with this thing.
Alamby looking mighty fresh again! wowzers!
Hope they make a new one of this updated version. Better lens. Faster connection. Would be amazing
I really want this concept with a fast 35mm equivalent prime btw. So,etching smaller than a zoom just makes more sense to me, though I get why they went with a zoom here
I really like the QX100, been using it quite a lot recently, though the software could use a bit of an update...
Here in 2020, the QX100 is still miles better than any smartphone with Quad Bayer or Nona Bayer pixel binning.
Oh nooooo…l who would’ve guessed tiny sensors and cheap micro lenses on a software controlled fad device would be worse than a real camera oh noooo
Except everyone. Don’t do fads kids.
Kai's ability to speak Cantonese is one of his hidden talents. Still waiting for Lok to whip out his British accent.
this is great to get good video angles when filming artistic stuff
well, no. nfc is slowest of all, it is used just for receiving/sending small amounts of information. it uses nfc just to get/set wifi settings so u dont have to set everything by yourself, but the images and live view is sent through wifi. nfc max speed is up to ~400kb/s, while wifi is up to 600mb/s. also range for nfc smaller, only ~20cm, so even if it used nfc for all data, u could not use lenses and the phone seperatly.
sorry for my broken english
Please do a followup. It now works great with Android kit Kat!! I almost returned it. Now I can say it's the best camera purchase I have ever made.
This is the best Digrev show EVER.....Haaaaa aarrrggghhh....and all of a sudden Alambi is SO SO, SOoooo COOL..!
iPhone and Adroid apps are a little buggy now... but the cam takes great pictures... and is fun to use
Desperately waiting for new videos!
Can you please make a comparison between the two beginner cameras that shoots the best videos?
The QX100 is completely sold out in Hong Kong Sony Stores, with no word on when they'll get new stock.
Of course, I have no idea how many they shipped to begin with
Thanks for your Videos. It will be great to see how Lok captures the videos, how he works, his features and tips (e.g. one camera that shoots Lok and other - Lok's camera itself). Thanks!
Funniest DigitalRev episode ever! The old ladies, the "upskirt" photography... hahaha Nice :)
I'm just taking what you said. You said that you did not like the A77 because of the viewfinder, and the A99 is $2000. From what you said it seemed the only reason you did not like the A99 was because of its price. Also you can take photographs while switching between viewfinder and display during the short black screen. I also assume using the viewfinder means you are making sure a shot look right before taking it, so wouldn't the extra time mostly be adjusting the shot once you look into it?
I think this might be perfect for street photography and candid. i would also just use the button on the device to eliminate lag.
We need a 10 hour loop of Kai saying "BOKEH!".
I like past reviews but am not sure this equipment was given it's fair shake. I got the QX-100 as a gift and quickly fell in love. The picture quality is amazing (especially low light) and you can immediately share with friends on your phone. Unlike Kai, I have never had any disconnection problems or app related problems. My phone is a Samsung Galaxy Note II....also being Oct. of 2014 maybe the app kinks have been resolved. In any event the best part is setting up your QX100 on a tripod or wherever and you can take the pictures remotely using the cell phone. This opens up a lot of opportunities not available with normal cameras.
I've seen a few reviews for this lens and it seems they have one thing in common, the lens is always disconnecting from the phone. honestly I've been wanting to invest in a good camera or maybe something like this lens to attach to my iPhone since im always taking shots with it. I don't know if I would buy this product considering that if I want to take a shot at a particular moment if the lens disconnects or crashes than that would ruin the shot. thanks for this review! it helps quite a bit.
NFC is just used for a quick set-up of wi-fi connection. On its own it's way to slow for live view.
You are aware that all NFC does is simplify the connection, it still needs Wi-Fi to connect on the Z1 or any other NFC phone for that matter.
Sony has stated that they are issuing an update for it soon since the problem lies with compatibility on iOS7.
There is an Android app for this unit, remember Sony developed this camera for their Android OS Experia smartphones primarily, and it was adapted for iOS second. From what I read it does work better with Android phones but even then it has problems syncing depending on the specific Android phone
It's not fair to criticize the lag of the product if you're using an iPhone. They sell it as a compatible device but on a device with NFC and WiFi Direct the experience changes drastically!
I think the idea has potential...e.g. this could develop in a GoPro-esque direction.
Being able to use multiple devices and connect them with one termial recording and managing all of them simultaneously....I dunno just the first things that come to my mind
3:48 LOL BEST THING TO EVER HAPPEN
I wouldn't say its "biased" towards the iPhone since it was the only phone he had during the review, but I would like to see it being used by a Z and a note3/s4
If this was a real review, one should expect him mentioning about the superb and large sensor inside QX100 which beat the hell out of point-and-shoot cameras easily. On the other hand, QX100 was never reported of having connection issues with Android phones. Half of the video is about the connection problems. If it was Canon introduced the very same product, this review would be totally different.
If you have NFC you have far less connection woes than manually setting it up. Still takes a bit to connect but it's not as much of a hassle.
Hey mate!!
You've put me off QX10 soft ware!!!!!, but you have put me onto you. Like I said "Thank You". Wow! You are Smart, attractive, informative and helpful.
You know how museums don't let you take photos of the art? This is what I would use it for.
I think using NFC will be better, since there are tons of interference when using Wifi as
this will result disconnect and laggy screen update.
apparently it's not the first time Kai spoke Cantonese in front of camera. Remember the episode of hosting art exhibition in a cafe? Kai was able to speak complete sentence in that episode, I wonder what happen to his Cantonese since then, he could only speak single words now lol
I like when Kai using it as spy cam on 3:30 LOLOLOLOLOL
I like how the bug came in at the end and looked curious as well. :P
all i got to say is Cinema FV-5 + Xperia Z series + that lens = Holly perfection if it works
Would be nice to have the interchangeable lens ability for all your E-Mount Glass.
I have been considering buying this but now when I saw this video it seems quite disappointing. I'm not a professional photographer so I don't have my own camera but love taking photos with my phone and wish I could get better quality, so this seemed like a perfect solution, guess not :/
I told them to review this on fb. I guess they finally listened
NFC is more used just for the first connection, everything else is either via bluetooth or Wifi. NFC has the highest speed of 424 kbit/s, I dont think that is enough to support an LCD viewfinder.
Yep, dumb question. He is in Hong Kong, not Japan. He wears a silver bracelet on his left arm.
Do another quick review with a high end Android phone, preferably the Xperia Z or Xperia Z1. Should improve the experience.
good review. was always curious about it. Thanks.
i got the QX10 with 10x zoom ... Love this lens ^^
Kai knows the word 'camera' in Cantonese. That's beautiful.
Oh my... watch this after 3 years, still find Kai speaking cantonese super funny (in a good way tho) :P
