Doc your videos have really helped me to develop my cavity prep skills, at the uni in New Zealand where I am studying bachelor of oral therapy, we don’t get any demo , we get UA-cam links and watch and just go practice ourselves in simulation labs twice and then exam for that procedure , I can say your videos are a blessing Thank you very much for putting all the hardwork
Thanks Dr Stevenson for your videos full of information.I have learnt helpful tips from you.Just a request if you can post a video on full metal crown preparation and some tips from you to determine the path of insertion in a 3 unit bridge

Hi! Dr. Stevenson, Great Video! Can you please with this video include the amalgam restoration. It would really help to see how the prep and restoration would look like in one video
In our simulation lab , we are expected to do on upper molars with high speed handpiece with water on inside a manikin ,hope this video would be helpful today in my lab practice, will update , Thank u Doc
Beautiful prep! Is there any way to purchase supplies from your website to outside of the three countries listed at checkout(Australia, Canada, and the US)?
I read that the width of the occlusal cavity should accommodate the smallest condenser. Can you please explain if it means that the smallest condenser should sit on the floor of the cavity or should just the tip pass freely? Thanks
Just the tip pass through the opening of the convergent occlusal. However, this statement is a rather vague and inaccurate guide, not an absolute requirement. To wit, the Oregon #1 condenser is 0.6 mm...would this now become the proper width if you have an Oregon #1? Best recommendation is to establish a 1.0 mm wide isthmus. This will meet the standards of all schools and exam boards in the US.
Top quality videos no doubt. I really enjoy them and learn a lot. Would love to see something related to post and core in the future. Thanks a bunch for your efforts.
Hi! Instead of using an enamel hatchet to remove the enamel shell, can a explorer be used? We’re doing 2nd class cavities right now and they don’t provide hatchets for us, only a mirror and a explorer... :( Is it still possible? I don’t know how else to do it, the undermined areas are killing me
Nearly impossible to do without a chisel of some kind. You may be able to use a narrow bur at and angle to remove the undermined area, but be mindful of hitting the adjacent tooth, and even when you don't hit the adjacent tooth the extension (clearance) will be over-extended. Really a shame that your school fails to understand the importance of hand instruments.
I failed this practical and have to retake it next week, I am so scared :( this video has been helping so much. I rewatch and drill along and it is helping so much. I have ordered the 245 bur to work on making the box the proper height and convergence. What do you recommend for getting rid of lips on the very edge of the walls and the edge of gingival floor, just the hatchet? Even when I excessively sharpen mine it chips off too much and the wall breaks off or I get sharp irregularities. I've tried everything.
Doctor, Can you plz make a video on Endo and how to decide working length, specially with help of apex locators and the number of X rays that need to be taken during a complete Endo? Love your videos and I think many dentists out there would love to see more from you, specially in Endo and other areas. Thank you so much!
hi, can i ask how to get your lingual and buccal walls convergent? Is it all from a convergent bur or do you need to tilt the bur too. If so, which bur is best to create convergence, thanks a lot
Hi I’d recommend a 245 for the box and 330 for the occlusal. When refining, use an 330RGS, and never a straight fissure bur. This approach will keep the walls convergent
For amalgam, I use a #2 matrix band to extend more apically. For composite it's a whole different matter, namely margin elevation with either warm composite or preferably GIC which is packable.
Focus on the box form - it should be a curved rectangle and not a trapezoid shape. After this is accomplished simply blend the occlusal to the proximal carefully with a 330 but, bu removing tooth structure in the occlusal area, not the box.
Watching this while having lab exam tomorrow
Awesome - best wishes, Dr. S

Hello Dr
Your videos help a lot
Thank you for making them.
Can you plz do one on inlay cavity preparation plz
I have several inlay preps in the video library - check it out.

Not yet. If you have a friend here that can ship to you that could work.

@@StevensonDentalSolutions thank you for the prompt reply doctor
What speed is your handpiece in each of these steps? Thanks for the awesome vid. super helpful!
High speed with reduced foot pressure. Alternatively 50,000-100,000 electric
Thank you Dr.S ..It was very helpful..just one question- is it necessary to give a dovetail, if yes is the distal wall of dovetail diverging.?
Hi, no it’s not necessary, and yes, the distal wall would be divergent- thank you
Top quality videos no doubt. I really enjoy them and learn a lot. Would love to see something related to post and core in the future. Thanks a bunch for your efforts.
Will do!
Love it
Respected Sir, What will be your position when doing MOD preparation on Lower Molars ?
Thanks 😊
I use 7 o'clock for the initial prep and then work from 9-12 for the refinement with a combination of direct and indirect vision.
@@StevensonDentalSolutionsThanks dear Sir

Make the lip very thin. Make sure your sharpened edge is at 45 degrees and not more acute.

Our endo series will be coming in the future. Thank you!
My school doesn’t use 330 RGS. What would your next recommendation be otherwise? If you had to recommend 2nd best
245
Hello Dr.Stevenson,
For composites do we make the same prep? If so, then does the axio-pulpal line angle need to be bevelled?
Smaller prep - rounded line angles, flares okay, depth about 1.25-1.5 mm, and yes an AP bevel as well. Thank you for the question.
@@StevensonDentalSolutions thankyou!
Plz mention name of bur you used in cavity prep?
330, 245, RGS330

Thanks for replying! So with these burs no tilting is required to create convergence? As i find tilting often widens the cavity too much
Correct - pretty cool
What would you do in case where you don’t have the enamel hatchet? What instrument would be a substitute?
You could use a Bin-angle chisel or even a GMT.
Hatchets dont work that gr8 on nissin kilgore as they work on acadental
.what is the solution
Very sharp hatchets and lots of practice.
@@StevensonDentalSolutions thank u sir
Hello Dr.
For bench exam do we mostly get class 2 amalgam preps or class 2 composite preps?
Amalgam
@@StevensonDentalSolutions thanks alot!
Is there an alternative to gingival trimmer
Yes, the enamel hatchet may work - it may even be sharpened like a trimmer if needed.
Sir can you please tell me the type of the bur which you are using .
330 for occlusal, 245 for box, 330 RGS for refinement.
@@StevensonDentalSolutions thank you 😊

I Have #question Dr..
If the caries extended to sub gingival proximally.. How can seat the filling in the box?
filled with GIC?
For amalgam, I use a #2 matrix band to extend more apically. For composite it's a whole different matter, namely margin elevation with either warm composite or preferably GIC which is packable.

Thanks..
Dr can I use flowable composite to elevate the margin?
You may, but be aware of the shrinkage factor and likelihood of micro leakage...@@El_mahdi313

What manufacturer makes the 330RGS? Unable to find them.
Brassler and they are available from stevensondentalsolutions.com
Thanks
Awesome 😎
Can you please allow the bur site to accept Afterpay 😭😭
We have had Afterpay for several months - it'll be in the check out page of your cart.
Okay thank you i must have missed it when i tried to buy before only gave me PayPal option i might try again today 🙏🏽🙏🏽
Is it possible for people living in Australia to also use Afterpay? or is it only for US residents

Do you ship RGS instruments in Asia? We need them!
We can. Especially if you purchase a bunch - you could get them for your friends as well. reach out to Savi info@stevensondentalsolutions.com
Doc..i can't do the step of flaring when i transferred to the proximal surface i lose the the shape of the cavity
Focus on the box form - it should be a curved rectangle and not a trapezoid shape. After this is accomplished simply blend the occlusal to the proximal carefully with a 330 but, bu removing tooth structure in the occlusal area, not the box.
not bad
