Giles was the one character from that show that I really wanted to see a spin off of. A prequel series that explored his Ripper years would be very entertaining, I think.
The father-daughter relationship between Buffy and Giles is amazing. Giles is Buffy’s real father, not Hank Summers, who didn’t even show up to Joyce’s funeral.
tbh Giles realised in the first few episodes that he had no power at all. She barely once did as he asked. 1x03 she still became a cheerleader, 1x05 she still went out with Owen etc etc he was a mentor sure, but VERY early on he had to accept that it was an equal partnership at first and then she took the lead about series 3 IMO when she started coming up with plans for the mayor etc It's what I love about season 1, them working out how to work together. You're right though that he doesn't seem to mind when Buffy, frequently, proves him wrong. Giles has his problems but toxic masculinity is not one of them (he seems to have siphoned that all in to Ripper). And as male role models go he's probably the best on Buffy. (and in case you're wondering, he's my favourite character :) )
I just wish we got to see more of Giles's past come into play. We got a few peeks into his past impulsiveness and darkness, but I would have liked to see more, maybe a throwback episode purely exploring the night he summoned the demon that killed his friends. And now that I say that I'm going to search youtube to see if anyone made it as a fan film.
Xanders first line to Buffy was "Can I have you" but he meant "can I help you". Giles first line is "Can I help you" but it does kiiinda claim ownership a tad. He proceds to tell her what she wants and what is her destiny.
@@Angelalex242 For a superhero woman, sure, but for "regular" women like Fred, etc, he is so stereotypical "you are a weak woman and should stay out of the action, I am the strong man and will fight the battles/protect you".
@@spikesecho724 Eh. Buffy does the same thing to Xander. "I am the superhero, you're the mere mortal, I will protect you." That's actually the point of Buffy...gender flipping all those roles. Buffy gets particularly self righteous about it Season 7.
@@Angelalex242 Ummm, idk what show you watched, but she regularly used all her female crew in battles. Especially in season 7. So that definitely not the same as Angel, when it comes to Fred, and even sometimes cordy

Oz being a student is still finding his way in the world. That being said I do think he is one of the more stable characters and I am working on an Oz vid
@@Twisted-View Sure, but many young men who were watching such as myself could really look up to Oz. Xander was fairly decent, but he had flaws and he was often proven wrong by the episode's conclusion. But Oz was confident, self-assured, caring, and as you said, stable. So I don't know how him being a student without a complete perspective on life hinders his image as a role model.
Giles is the only Watcher I like in the entire series (yeah I don't like Wesley that much sorry). Band Candy made me love him even more as a character. I enjoyed seeing both those sides/ages of actually both his and Joyce's character. Their chemistry was spot on for two actors who at that point didn't have many deep scenes with each other. Random, but it would have been interesting to see the Ripper film/series they were cooking up back in the day when they were talking of doing even more spin-offs. Which of all the spin-off options, especially with how long it's been, I would think of all the spin-off ideas they have this would be the easiest to do. They'd have to recast anyway since they'd need someone else to represent his younger self.
I know I've heard of plateau Socrates but that doesn't compare to Robert Giles He's all that in a bag of chips well only side to that would be Buffy because she's the red dressing to his chips even if they are British
Sure a few other characters that I think represent talking to you well other than Willow we got close Spirit Sanders part challenge 9 done childlike personality that Buffy had to give up because she's a square and has to worry about her family which is her mother spot is you're ab level as in mind to do something other than being the Slayer and having a normal life which would be f*** his mother a fight is going to lose control in a certain moment which dialed off of qualify as Angel too the watchers also are sticklers for the rules her friend I also think they're nothing more than a bunch of Apple who got Maggie completely which is basically trying to control Buffy the same way to watches are there I said it I don't like the watchers council not one bit
Sorry to burst your bubble, the mind, heart, spirit relationship to Buffy is well established has been studied, books written about and entire classes have been dedicated to it. But as a secondary aspect to Giles character he takes on the role of father and therefore patriarch.

The was talk of making a Ripper TV series. I don't know how far it got to being made whether it was just suggested or what but it never came to be.

Actually this relationship Buffy has with Giles is twofold its the father daughter dynamic, but it also show cases non traditional families.
@@Twisted-View He's basically her foster-daddy, as far as how they interact.
Giles was always my favorite character. I especially love the interactions between him and Spike as the show progressed
Say what you will, but he can carry a.tune. when he sang Behind blue eyes I melted.
Not the best move in the world, but watch Repo: The genetic Opera. He has a cracking number in that

Maybe Giles and Buffy's power struggles represent a parent's relationship with a teenager?

Angel does significantly better on his own show. He tends to have low showings on Buffy's show, but much better showings on his own.
Actually, Angel is one of my fave character's, and you are absolutely right, it's not until the spin off that he shines.
@@Twisted-View Some of Angel's best showings as a positive role model are anything with Faith and the Epiphany episode.
