No clue. Maybe the guest is not supposed to wash dishes or something, but he could've washed the rest to be even nicer since there were not that many in the sink.
If you come to someone's house you actually expected not to lift any finger. Esp if it's the first visit. At least this is the culture at my country(also asian). Saying that he will only wash what he used means he didn't want to make his friends uncomfortable to see him do extra work.
