Saw somewhere that a local LEO tased I think a couple of ATF agents. I felt about as sorry for them being tased as I would a drug kingpin. They're getting to the point nobody wants or likes them. Even fellow LEOs.

V1 Blank Fire Device by PAMAX Tactical, Bang 22, TRMR (impossible to find now since they stop making it), Dynatex, etc. The British made TRMR is the most well know because it works well and of higher quality than its competitor. Plus it takes 12 GA which makes it ridiculously loud compare to its .209 primer and 9mm blank counterparts.

I dont consider $40 to be too costly for a police department. To cheap out over $20 that could result in failure or injury does not seem to be the right choice imo. Still a need product, i enjoyed the video.
I would have designed that very differently. It is both an injury waiting to happen and not very reliable. What would make more sense is having a fixed bezel similar to that on a light timer with a half cock notch, a striker slot and a timing ring. That would allow for instant when spoon released, timed when spoon released, instant on impact or timed on impact.
The TREMR design is functional, but sure it has its faults. I won't deny that. Though if you do get around to making a rival device, we can test do a ton of wild tests for you.
@@jlambuth I'm trying to remember where I saw the mechanism I'm describing. I think it dates to WW1 or the 1920's and it may be covered by a patent. I remember seeing the mechanism being armed by pulling out on the ring on the striker and rotating it to either PD or to a timing mark for PDD. If someone made a mechanism which used a percussion cap or 209 primer and a paper pouch of black powder to drive a captive piston within the body, would that still be considered a destructive device? I'm neither a manufacturer, nor a machinist, so I would not be the one making a prototype.

What exactly about this device is so destructive that it has to be regulated more than a firearm? Did the ATF explain their reason for this? From the looks of it, this thing is basically a blank firing adapter with no delay system.

flashes too fast for the camera to pickup. Occasionally you will catch a video where the camera shutter picks up part of the flash but mostly it's that camera cant pick it up.
It's basically that cameras recover much quicker than eyes. The flash from a flash bang is very bright, but very quick, on the order of milliseconds. Film and digital have comparatively low saturation points. That is to say, once it gets to a certain point, it can't get any whiter to the camera. So brighter doesn't do anything. A film video camera, recording at say, 30 frames per second, basically takes an image every 33 milliseconds. So, _at best,_ the flash would exist in two frames of whited-out film, and be gone. A modern digital video camera is recording much faster than that, with each "frame" being a line (google "rolling shutter") so at best you'd have several lines of white-out, and nothing beyond related to the flash. In both cases, the recording part is either replaced (film) or reset (digital) and is 100% ready to go again _very_ shortly. The effect you generally do see with cameras during bright flashes (more of a gray- or black-out) is usually more software based trying to compensate for the instantaneous brightness, but being unable to adjust quickly enough to maintain a completely stable image. Eyes work differently. As you increase the brightness, you increase the stimulation of the eye's detectors and increase the amount of time it takes to get back to normal (eg. camera flash afterimage). When overstimulated, the detectors in the eye don't go back to normal nearly instantaneously. They remain basically screaming their little rod-and-cone heads off until they feel better, which could be 5-10 seconds, or 5-10 minutes depending on how direct you were looking at the flash and how bright it was.
They should develop some sort of wind-up clapper type detonator for it. It would be easy to do, cheap, and dependable. I've been in many situations where, if that FB didn't detonate, good guys were going to go down. I like the basic design, but that lack of dependability depending on the density of the floor covering is just too risky.
So my question is that if those modified shorty blank shells are so cheap and readily available why don't we have modified flare gun style blank firing pistols that take those rounds but can't load in a standard shell, surely they would be an effective non lethal distractionary device with the same noise capability but without the complicated deployment system, every leo should be able to operate a handgun style platform right?

I like the CO2 paint ball type reusable flash bangs(ok bangs no real flash) why? they are field reloadable. 2.They are plenty loud and distracting with the right burst disk installed. 3. they wont cause any unintended fires in a dwelling. and 4th and best they can be time delayed from release to bang with repeatable time to activation and no hard surface to hit or have the unit fail. and of course they are not regulated as of last information I have got.
I don’t foresee leo’s actually deploying this in any scenario. However I do foresee leo departments purchasing a massive quantity of these because why not??? It’s not their own money and love all the new toys
It always suprises me how little flash powder is in these flashbangs. Over here in europe we celebrate new years eve with firecrackers containing like 100 grams, sometimes even up to 350grams. But yeah using flashbangs indoors during breaching or something is a different story, indoors 5 grams of flashpowder will ring some ears lol
fix it.. used a pistol cartridge something large and definitely under .5 inch.. .44 magnum, etc. and put a trigger on it and in such a way that it still cam be hand held.

No flash, but the airsoft flashbang grenade which is explosion by co2 gas is super loud! I have even thrown the in a swimming pool and they are stll loud.
The failure could be on the cartridge primer than the grenade itself. Also some situations you can't afford it to go off, such as volatile environments. Say a truck carrying gas just crashed and gas is all over the place.
Being honest with you, I don’t think dropping it in grass 2 feet from you counts as “limitation” because you don’t get the same momentum from say a throw in actual applicable situations
Yea but what he doesn't explain is that while capable of using 12Ga as shown here they also come with an insert that let's you use .209 blanks so it's way less flames and bang to avoid.... you know ... making the dudes deaf while burning down the field If you want more safety and bangs you can also swap the base to end up with 3 .209 blanks so that you can no longer put 12 Ga in there and it also lets you throw it 3 times before needing a reload
it was banned at certain fields a while back due to multiple cases of hearing injuries including one rare but bad case of it being thrown into a room where someone was laying down and ruptured his eardrum

Seems like a lot of regulation for a non-delay/timed device that is impact activated. Seems like a 12ga blank with a thumbtack and ducttape would be as reliable.
Let me get this straight. It uses a shotgun blank, requires line of sight and activates instantly. Unless the bad guys have thick carpet, then it might not work at all. Oh, and each device has to be registered with the ATF. How is this any better than just loading a blank into a shotgun and firing it in to the room before you enter? Don't most entry teams have a shotgunner or at least someone carrying a breaching shotgun anyway?

V1 Blank Fire Device by PAMAX Tactical, Bang 22, TRMR (impossible to find now since they stop making it), Dynatex, etc. The British made TRMR is the most well know because it works well and of higher quality than its competitor. Plus it takes 12 GA which makes it ridiculously loud compare to its .209 primer and 9mm blank counterparts.
lol and worse off ; a bunch of the simulation flash bangs used in paintball and airsoft are pyrotechnic, like their big brother. Yes there's some that use a 12g CO² cartridge but they aren't as loud as say an Enola Gaye Mk5 flash bang simulator....edit: they have a larger mk7 now ;)

I dont consider $40 to be too costly for a police department. To cheap out over $20 that could result in failure or injury does not seem to be the right choice imo. Still a need product, i enjoyed the video.
I would have designed that very differently. It is both an injury waiting to happen and not very reliable.
What would make more sense is having a fixed bezel similar to that on a light timer with a half cock notch, a striker slot and a timing ring. That would allow for instant when spoon released, timed when spoon released, instant on impact or timed on impact.
The TREMR design is functional, but sure it has its faults. I won't deny that. Though if you do get around to making a rival device, we can test do a ton of wild tests for you.

I remember seeing the mechanism being armed by pulling out on the ring on the striker and rotating it to either PD or to a timing mark for PDD.
If someone made a mechanism which used a percussion cap or 209 primer and a paper pouch of black powder to drive a captive piston within the body, would that still be considered a destructive device?

What exactly about this device is so destructive that it has to be regulated more than a firearm? Did the ATF explain their reason for this? From the looks of it, this thing is basically a blank firing adapter with no delay system.

i mean flashbangs never have flash why are they called this way? wikipedia says they produce millions of candelas and stuff but never ever in any bang video there is a blinding flash. only bang and smoke. can you explain? thank you.

flashes too fast for the camera to pickup. Occasionally you will catch a video where the camera shutter picks up part of the flash but mostly it's that camera cant pick it up.
Same reason you don't normally see muzzle flashes on daylight shooting videos vs night time videos
It's basically that cameras recover much quicker than eyes. The flash from a flash bang is very bright, but very quick, on the order of milliseconds.
Film and digital have comparatively low saturation points. That is to say, once it gets to a certain point, it can't get any whiter to the camera. So brighter doesn't do anything.
A film video camera, recording at say, 30 frames per second, basically takes an image every 33 milliseconds. So, _at best,_ the flash would exist in two frames of whited-out film, and be gone. A modern digital video camera is recording much faster than that, with each "frame" being a line (google "rolling shutter") so at best you'd have several lines of white-out, and nothing beyond related to the flash. In both cases, the recording part is either replaced (film) or reset (digital) and is 100% ready to go again _very_ shortly. The effect you generally do see with cameras during bright flashes (more of a gray- or black-out) is usually more software based trying to compensate for the instantaneous brightness, but being unable to adjust quickly enough to maintain a completely stable image.
Eyes work differently. As you increase the brightness, you increase the stimulation of the eye's detectors and increase the amount of time it takes to get back to normal (eg. camera flash afterimage). When overstimulated, the detectors in the eye don't go back to normal nearly instantaneously. They remain basically screaming their little rod-and-cone heads off until they feel better, which could be 5-10 seconds, or 5-10 minutes depending on how direct you were looking at the flash and how bright it was.
They should develop some sort of wind-up clapper type detonator for it. It would be easy to do, cheap, and dependable. I've been in many situations where, if that FB didn't detonate, good guys were going to go down.
I like the basic design, but that lack of dependability depending on the density of the floor covering is just too risky.
For the record that baby that was burned wasn't due to an accident. It was due to a cop throwing a flash bang directly into a crib.
So my question is that if those modified shorty blank shells are so cheap and readily available why don't we have modified flare gun style blank firing pistols that take those rounds but can't load in a standard shell, surely they would be an effective non lethal distractionary device with the same noise capability but without the complicated deployment system, every leo should be able to operate a handgun style platform right?

Didn't realize that something as simple as say grass and carpeting could be problematic for its deployment like that.......lol a reason to not have hardwood floors at the doors and to make it so shag carpeting can make a come back 😏. They make different bases like .209 primer and 9mm as well as 12g blank or mag flash.
I like the CO2 paint ball type reusable flash bangs(ok bangs no real flash) why? they are field reloadable. 2.They are plenty loud and distracting with the right burst disk installed. 3. they wont cause any unintended fires in a dwelling. and 4th and best they can be time delayed from release to bang with repeatable time to activation and no hard surface to hit or have the unit fail. and of course they are not regulated as of last information I have got.

It always suprises me how little flash powder is in these flashbangs. Over here in europe we celebrate new years eve with firecrackers containing like 100 grams, sometimes even up to 350grams. But yeah using flashbangs indoors during breaching or something is a different story, indoors 5 grams of flashpowder will ring some ears lol

Assuming it is a typical flash powder, no. That does not detonate and ANFO needs a detonating primary/secondary.

The failure could be on the cartridge primer than the grenade itself. Also some situations you can't afford it to go off, such as volatile environments. Say a truck carrying gas just crashed and gas is all over the place.
Being honest with you, I don’t think dropping it in grass 2 feet from you counts as “limitation” because you don’t get the same momentum from say a throw in actual applicable situations

If you want more safety and bangs you can also swap the base to end up with 3 .209 blanks so that you can no longer put 12 Ga in there and it also lets you throw it 3 times before needing a reload
it was banned at certain fields a while back due to multiple cases of hearing injuries including one rare but bad case of it being thrown into a room where someone was laying down and ruptured his eardrum

Let me get this straight. It uses a shotgun blank, requires line of sight and activates instantly. Unless the bad guys have thick carpet, then it might not work at all. Oh, and each device has to be registered with the ATF. How is this any better than just loading a blank into a shotgun and firing it in to the room before you enter? Don't most entry teams have a shotgunner or at least someone carrying a breaching shotgun anyway?
