Why stop there? Just have local classes wherever towns can hold em. Maybe grants for those who know the craft to hold inexpensive trade schools/workshops and pass it on to kids who may have an interest. I don't know if it's true in India, but some countries have free primary school up to a point before sending your kid to school costs money. A trade like this for tourist towns and museums could help. Just a thought.
I'm working with Mr. Jabbar Khatri from this video and they're one of the most humble and talented people to work with. With designer collaborations and entrepreneurial aids we must save such rare and beautiful crafts of india. Thank you Business Insider for bringing this craft into light

Seeing that the craft relies on freehand art is truly marvelous. This traditional artform should be recognized worldwide and be kept alive for the next generation.
Is extremely inefficient. The end product is just pattern on cloth. We have way better system for that since the 19th century. You are just valuing inefficiency. What difference does it make if he were to draw by hand on a computer and draw by hand with oil on a stick. The end product is better with modern machinery. The quality is not better with oil on a stick.

@@StupidBadyXD What reason?
The same reason hand drawn paintings still sell for millions compared to your 5 dollar Ikea portrait.
@@StupidBadyXD You may think it's inefficient and perhaps it is, but there is space for both to exist in the market place. There are many who will appreciate it.
@@mandyhorne4333 Agreed. Though at the end of the day, that's kind of the issue. It's a niche market, and it's really only marketable because it's a traditional craft, in that they're mostly making it in the traditional way (aside from using industrial castor oil). "StupidBadyXD" is partially correct. It's a novelty item, essentially. This doesn't really take any skill or require a great deal of artistic talent (aside from being creative in the freehand form). Anyone could theoretically do this.
It's only because they're some of the few Indian people doing it, and it's a family tradition. It wouldn't sell from anywhere else.
Also, once you make it scalable, even within India --- it stops being profitable.
Absolutely amazing, the skill and dedication to this art should be preserved for future generations.

When he said, "I will not waste my life on this art." That broke my heart. Imagine how desperate you'd have to be to abandon a family tradition that's been with you for 8 generations.
Bruh imagine not carrying on a traditional that has been in your family for 8 generation I would feel guilty
@@Holly_woodNation Then you should be a hunter or farmer. That's what human was for hundreds if not thousands of generation. You should feel guilty of you are not farmer or hunter.
@@StupidBadyXD ? That's not a tradition. A tradition is something passed down in a family generation to generation. In the beginning, hunters and farmers were more societal roles because it was necessary for that time and space and that has long died out due to convience of modern technology. People stopped passing down the skills for the roles of farmers and hunters because it wasn't as necessary anymore and it didn't hold a strong weight of importance. The difference here is family passed it down purposely with the intention of the next generation doing the same. It was an one of a kind skill that defined who they were as artisans. There's a certain pride and history attached to it.
@@in_awe5508 Farming rice/wheat/potato/corn, all of which requires skills. You can't just have anyone who doesn't know how to farm go and start farming. If you ever lived in any farming village, you know exactly how is pass on 1 generation after another. These so call "artwork" are also isn't "necessary for the time and space and that has long died out due to convince of modern technology". Any designer can draw up a design on to a computer, print it out with machinery with and mass produce them for everyone to enjoy. Clothing or rugs stop requiring a single person design, drawn, and production all by themselves, because "it wasn't as necessary anymore and it didn't hold a strong weight of importance". All he's doing is making cloth color with oil, draw them manually and make "pretty drawings" on cloth
@@StupidBadyXD For the record, they take time to master, so, they still need to be respected for that. Oh what, technology can copy that? Well, not all technology can help. That's just me.

i hope this art technique get taught at art schools, its fascinating and the culture behind it made it more impressive
In the 60s in Karachi’s Elphinstone Street, as it was known then, there used to be a practitioner of this beautiful art form . He had a tiny little shop open to the pavement. Apart from people actually ordering pieces from him, many would stop to just watch this amazing artist create something the like of which most of us knew nothing about. With my pocket money I ordered a hanky with my initial in the corner, surrounded with flowers.Sadly, one day he was gone. No one knew what became of him or if he taught his wonderful art to anyone else. So heartbreaking, an unusual and unique talent lost forever.
I cannot believe they are the last family. This art style is one of my favorites. This is really sad! I hope since the video came out, that they've taught their craft to many others who want to keep the tradition alive. A cultural tradition dying before us like many others. 😭
I am almost teary when the mention that he decided to stop, but thank GOD he continued. ♥️♥️♥️
I am in tear that they continue and scam people like you to take a class on such an outdated skill. The end product is just drawing pattern onto a cloth. We have WAY MORE efficient way to do it. Look around you, look at all those pattern you have on your clothing. You are valuing extreme inefficiency from a time where most of humanity was starving and working meal to meal, not even paycheck to paycheck, just meals to meals.
@@StupidBadyXD I pity you bro you don't understand art. God bless you my friend.
@@shielatv22 You are valuing an extremely inefficient way of producing pattern on cloth. The pattern here is also very limited. This art is literally all about "inefficiency" because any modern designer would just draw it up and have it produce with machinery so everyone can afford to buy them. Instead, this guy spend 2 years slowly drawing up 1 single cloth and call it a master piece. What difference does it make he were to use modern machinery? It produce the exact same thing, but much much faster and able to mass produce. Let it die.
@@StupidBadyXD I know what you want to say bro but I like it because the value is because it was produced by HANDS and not machine. The value is because it had LONG TIME PRODUCTION/CREATION to produce. If he started to use machine, as a buyer, why should I buy from this guy when I can buy from the other stores who uses machine like him right? the value is because it was made from TRADITION. Machine products are STEREOTYPES and boring when it comes to ART. It's like, why buy painting when you can buy the photograph version.
And actually he's the last person using hands to produce his product so it's ok, like what was said in this video some people here already used machine so it's up to buyers where they want to buy. And if you ask me if there are people who wanna buy hand made, believe me, there's A LOT (I'm one of them) who doesn't want the devalued version using machine.
Sorry that I saw things this way because I APPRECIATE tradition and I am sure there are also MANY others out there who saw things the same wsy as me. I do not like patronizing mass production with the help of machine because I know how some MACHINEs affects our environment and it's employee. I am not saying that I don't use products produced by machine because they're part of our modern society, so I do use em. It's just that, when it comes to ART, Machine production is DEVALUing things, like how you make MORE MONEY thru MACHINE and it will make the money WORTHLESS.
What I want is TIME, EFFORT, TRADITION, ETHNICITY. So I am ok buying these stuff and I am ok with higher price, it's WORTH it.
@@shielatv22 basically you are buying sentimental values. Just feelings. I value production. Increase in Production is how humanity no longer require 80+ hour work week just to have enough to eat. Increase in production is how more people are able to specialize into being doctors, engineers, scientists, etc. These ancient techniques should stay in history record as relic of the past. It doesn’t really add value to people. We ought to embrace the future and remember to past. Not devolve into the past.

Maybe they want to keep it in their culture. Idk, if a gringo takes courses about this and then makes money out of it, it would definitely classify as cultural appropriation.
Creating a course? Sounds like a good idea. But online? Well i think it'll be hard to pull it out. The participants would be unable to make the paint since he said only a few are able to do that. And, it's hard for them, the mentors, to look closely at participant's works

I was like “oh that’s neat, it probably takes practice “, then they showed the wall art and I was like O.O
no wonder this is becoming a lost art! The detail and effort are incredible!
Боже,какое мастерство! Дай Аллаһ Вам долгих и счастливых лет !!!
These art should be preserved... priceless 👌

oh YES!!!! IKR HE'LL HAVE A LOTTA LIKES!! THXX
The piece that took him 2 years is definitely worth more than a thousand
That's part of the problem. Because of consumerism and mass production, we have come to expect cheaper and cheaper textiles without regard for the work that goes into them
@@cbjones2212 that's why return to monke
1000 dollar is about 60k atleast in inr my dad's salary is less than that so even if he sells 2 pieces month he will be alright
@@cbjones2212 But you can make it a luxury item. And put really high prices. most rich people love unique and handmade things. They just have to know hot to sell this to rich people. Also internationalize their products.

Imagine you're one of those tourists who picked up a piece of this one of a kind art without knowing just how special it is.
It’s upwards a thousand dollars so I’m sure you’d know it’s special.

I CAN PROVIDE IT
When brands like H&M and zara prevails, these guys are actually worth millions and millions.
Taking their art to sell online could save the business and art-and I agree heartily, they should be charging much more for art that is so rare and so time consuming, and so intricate. The British devalued Indian art. It’s time to take that back.
Well it's simple supply and demand. Maybe the demand isn't motivated.
