Yeh. Them and Teenage Fanclub. IMO then usurped by Primal Scream when Mani and Darren Mooney joined. Kevin Shields for a while. Then the original Roses reappeared. Now, I dunno. I saw one of them after covid - Mick Head and The Red Elastic Band.
Couldn't agree more.man.for me the best around upto up at the lake love that album but after that .just wasnt the same what happened? Got clean lost the mojo maybe? .
Remember watching this was 16 what a time to be alive bands like the charlatans puttin out tunes like this ! No social media balls just rock n roll happy times
'shuda cuda wuda' Martin ask me to play drums for them in 1987, then, it was just Martin and Rob, called the Gift Horses I think and then they changed to the Charlatans, I ran them to a gig in my little yellow Suzuki van at the time, all I could get in it was Rob's Hammond his Leslie Speaker and Mart's bass gear with him as passenger, the rest went in a Rover p6 V8s, one gig was support to the Stone Roses at Nots poly, still have my stage pass, I was also at the Overstrand in Walsall for Tim's first gig as the new singer who replaced Baz Kettley, they finished the set to the sound of a helicopter, as they left the stage, Tim said.'were gonner be fuckin massive' then a few years later, they did Knebworth and landed in a helicopter, he was right! Very sad about Rob and John, I last saw John at Houston Station about 2002, they were waiting for a train to go to the Q awards, I think Kyle gave them the award. A great band that went on to do well, I think this is my fav track. Steve.
I remember watching this on Jools all those years ago..❤ And the most vivid thing about it is Tim Burgess stroking his throat whilst singing the last line "I can't sing anymore, I'm going home"... "Going home, going home.." Absolute class..I will forever love this song and particular performance. 🖒❤ xx
Remember recording this jools show and rewinding back on this song over and over just watching rob Collins fingers on the keyboard and Hammond.such a tragic waste of talent did he realise how good he was rip rob.
Love this band, love this song, and this is my favourite performance of this song. Probably the best Charlatans period too. They played "Just lookin'" on this show as well - still have it on VHS somewhere.
I'll never forget seeing this on Jools Holland with my old man. I'd just rolled in from the boozer - and it came on. I said to the old boy "i want this played at my funeral"...
MORN MAURITZ CHECK SO HO AND MY COMMENT I AV 3 FAV TUNES SO HO SOMETIMES BY JAMES AND I WANT TO BE ADORED BY STONE ROSES I DONT HAVE 1 FOR OASIS A BAND THAT LOST ITS ROOTS AND THEN THEY PUT THEIR HEADS UP THEIR OWN ARSES IN WEEKS OF THE FIRST SINGLE TOO COCKY FOR ME PS THEN THEY PACKED UP FOR LONDON AND SEEMED NOT TO SAY GOODBYE TO MANCHESTER FOLK JUST SWANNED OFF BIG TIME CHARLIE BIG SPUDS LITTLE PRICKS FOR ME THE CHARLIES ARE WORLD CLASS FOR TALENT AND 1 OF THE CROWD BANDS CHECK OUT TELLIN STORIES AND MY COMMENT TIM HAS A 499 SHIRT ON LIAM HAS TO GO TO SAVILL ROW DO YOU GET MY DRIFT OK M8 AV A GREAT DAY TC GAV X
OASIS GROWL TO MUCH TO MUCH NASAL NO ENOUGTH THROAT IE CORDS GET SMASHED IN YOUR FACE STYLE TO MUCH I LIKE TO BE SANG TO NOT SANG AT CHARLATANS HAVE ALLROUND HUMBLE HONEST APPEAL OK M8 TC LOVE YA MAAN X
I remember having long hair when the Charlatans,Roses and the Madchester scene was about, as a massive Charlies fan I know this tune was long after (94 I think?),It took ages to grow me hair but at that time it was unusual to not have long hair.... luckily at 36 i still can grow hair but those days are etched. 16 years old getting pissed on 3 cans of stella and listening to baggy tunes. YES!
Wish rob had stuck around a bit longer, I reckon he had hundreds of riffs still to contribute, the later albums are good, sometimes great but I know he would have insisted on keeping the organ as their signature instrument.
Oh don't, breaks my heart to think what could have been. Not that Tony wasn't and hasn't been an awesome addition (won't say replacement out of respect for both). Miss the heavy hammond days.
Tim’s cool as fuck indie boy look, great band some brilliant albums of quality from these lads, I’d love it to be the 90s again, life was simple and a whole lot of fun 😊
Yep.. There was a very 'exile on main street' vibe on that album. I don't mind too much.. bands like Charlatans, Supergrass, Radiohead all had their obviously 'Stones' or 'Floyd' or 'White Album' moments and you could tell what they had been listening to but at least they wrote good songs. Noel on the other hand has made a career out of being a total rip-off merchant and is far more shallow lyrically the his peers
Best band in the world at this time by a country mile. Rob was a bona fide genius. RIP Rob and Jon, sadly missed.
Yeh. Them and Teenage Fanclub. IMO then usurped by Primal Scream when Mani and Darren Mooney joined. Kevin Shields for a while. Then the original Roses reappeared. Now, I dunno. I saw one of them after covid - Mick Head and The Red Elastic Band.
Was just thinking the same. Rob and Jon were virtuoso musicians no doubt.
Couldn't agree more.man.for me the best around upto up at the lake love that album but after that .just wasnt the same what happened? Got clean lost the mojo maybe?
.
Rob was the musical genius
Rob definitely was a genius.
Right up there with Sproston Green for me. At their best, a truly life-affirming band.

I remember watching this on Jools all those years ago..❤

Class jacket Tim was wearing I had one like that in the 90s lost it in a drunken night in South London was gutted the next day
I love The Charlatans, especially this period (1995-96). I love Later... with Jools Holland. That's why I am here.
when rob and Jon were with us hope your jamming up there guys
If there's a heaven it's got a great drummer and keyboardist in the band up there. Top blokes aswell.
Remember recording this jools show and rewinding back on this song over and over just watching rob Collins fingers on the keyboard and Hammond.such a tragic waste of talent did he realise how good he was rip rob.
Top piano player and really missed
Doubt it, that boy had some stunning songs in him
Decent song and an excellent performance. They really could play their instruments.
not just a genius on the keyboard, rob Collins vocal harmonies were top notch too
What a fucking tight act these lads are. Oh for it to be 94-99 again!!!
Brilliant band, brilliant drummer, Rest in peace jon brookes.
Love this band, love this song, and this is my favourite performance of this song. Probably the best Charlatans period too. They played "Just lookin'" on this show as well - still have it on VHS somewhere.

Happy heavenly birthday Rob. Sadly missed.
Jesus Rob was amazing
I agree Edward, ex-pat living in Chicago originally from Brum. Writing a book about life in the britpop era as we speak.

You should check out John Lennons bring on the Lucie (freda people) where the charlatans got inspiration for this👍

What year was this?

I' the biggest Charlatans Rube from 1991. The edition is good but not the same!
Is there a Charlatans US??
Good idea wearing that jacket. Must have been cold as fuck under those studio lights,
@lee576450
rob collins
sadly he passed away in 1996
Cool as fuck
which came first,' ten storey love song' or' just when you're thinking things over'?
I am thinking the same listening to this in 2019..
lancashire bomber
sympathy for the devil
'Second Coming' was released year before 'The Charlatans'.
I don't see the similarity though. SFTD maybe
I remember thinking the bassist looked old. Well I was only 18.
Tim’s cool as fuck indie boy look, great band some brilliant albums of quality from these lads, I’d love it to be the 90s again, life was simple and a whole lot of fun 😊
How are they "indie" when they're signed to a major label? Try again, boomer.
Sounds like stone roses which isnt a bad thing. Ten story luurrve song.
If this was now, they would be branded as hipsters
Rob Collins....
...Rob was so good, everyone else, tight
Better than OASIS or BLUR or PULP in 1996
I think he needs a smaller coat.
100 x better than Oasis. Best band of the 90s.
Been bugging me for years what song they ripped off for this and finally realised, it's torn and frayed by the Stones
Influenced? Ripped off...are most bands not influenced by older tunes??
Yep.. There was a very 'exile on main street' vibe on that album.
