not unless you want to be a professional spiker. we used to play this when I was a kid in the Philipines by simply kicking the ball towards your opponent. Just make sure the ball does not touch the ground. To be a spiker we had to practice by hanging the ball up high the tree and we had to jump as high as we could to hit the ball by kicking it.

I don't understand why'd people call this an extreme game requiring superacrobatic skills and stuff. Maybe in competitive tournament, yes. But this game is super easy and fun to play with friends and family. Easy setup, dirt cheap and simple rules. And how about those acrobatic spikes? It is not a requirement. It's just a tactical advantage mostly practiced by professional players in high-end competitions. I remembered when it was a required subject in junior high school in Thailand. (Not sure if still, it is now) We only learned about volleying a Takraw, a ball weaved by rattan or plastic, with our feet and playing it in circle. That's just fundamental practicing for children to play it together overtime like any games else. In Thailand, we used to have a game called basket Takraw, trying to kick the ball into the basket hanged over the head, too.
