    The persistence of that "not on the iron" dogma boggles my mind. Rivals only the "solid glass behaves like liquid" and "don't hit a chisel, even hooped, with a metal hammer".

    I taught woodworking at a high school for 31 years and NOT ONCE did I teach the students to put their blade to the side, but always down. Stop the cliche it does not fit an educated person.

      You're right...I should have said: "in my experience in industrial art classes and what I observed over the course of working in the trade since the 1960's, I was never taught to (and have never seen any tradesman) lay planes on their sides". In other words, I should not have stated it as a fact, just as a personal experience and observation.
