Seriously. They don't get better than Justin Sandercoe. Someone who really (really - JS) cares to help people learn. An amazing person. What a fantastic thing he discovered here. Justin Sandercoe - breaking the thought barrier!
You're such a great teacher Ive always thought that something is missing in my brain circuits to mess up timing ,but to hear someone like you ,i literally live on your videos , say that timing wasn't your strongest point It just reassures me and gives me hope I especially love how you break things into little understandable beats and clicks Like nothing else matters and alot more Thank you sensei 🌷
The amazing thing is I heard, or rather didn't heat, the metronome. That shows me how important timing - accurate timing - really is. Adding this to my warmup routine immediately.
You're lessons are so clear, even for us who think we're too seasoned for this (guilty) I find you a great teacher and really get me thinking. One thing I notice that I'm sure you've mentioned is that you move as you play, get your foot moving or your head or both in time, you do it when you play in these lessons and I think it's also a point to make, that will help your timing really lock.
You're videos are simply amazing! I check your channel for new videos once in a while and I always find something useful. Even if I already know about the concept of a given video I still manage to find some little comment that's useful. There are lots od crappy music "lessons" on UA-cam, your's are not included. Keep it up, you are extremely helpful to me, and a lot of other people, I believe.
Thanks Justin! I've been playing for over 30 years and timing has never really something that comes naturally to me😂 it's not so bad when I play with other musicians, but I've kinda not been able to play with anyone for a while and now playing my acoustic alone and it's reminded me just how bad my timing is!😆so I'm here trying to learn from the beginning again😂
Every day in every way my playing is getter better Its not just me all would all be lost without your videos' thanks so much bro You are so good at what you do' stay lucky
Great vid. Great explanation, great lesson. Very true principles. In my opinion, the ultimate aspiration of every guitar player should be to play live. And because live playing is live and because life is imperfect anyway, timing just kinda goes away, everything goes away and you’re just basically dancing. Beautiful. The timing doesn’t go away. But as he states, it disappears. I know this is a goofy comment, very difficult to try to explain.
I have noticed this before, but never used it as a practice tool on its own. Also the slightly ahead or behind are great ideas for learning how to wiggle around in the pocket. Thanks very much Jason. Excellent vid
Wow, this was incredibly useful. I'm a beginner and quickly found that it was not easy to keep a steady rhythm. This exercise is great, and I can see that it will be useful for some time to come.
Since I've discovered the disappearing metronome fact I've always felt like a pro when I actually did one or two metronome ticks disappear while doing exercise. Awesome feeling. Very nice lesson. :)
Justin. You are a great teacher and I always find your videos useful. I find myself using some of your words in my lessons lol. I appreciate the time you take to focus on some of the most fundamental parts of music/guitar.
Hey Justin, great advice! other one is to practice with Presto metronome, it's free :) You can train with progressive increments, from 60 to 120 BPM, and you can set it to accelerate 1 BPM (or whatever you choose) every 1 bar, or 2, or whatever bars. Cheers from Argentina, you're a great teacher!
Here's another exercise, I found an app that drops the metronome click for a time, say set it at beat one of each bar. You have to be the metronome for the next three beats and hit that one in perfect time when the metronome clicks again. You can do this just clapping too. Try to sinc up the clapping with the click at say every forth bar.
Huh. This is pretty much what I do when I'm trying to match vocals or a guitar part. I put the record on and try to match rhythm, pitch, and intonation until it sounds like I'm just a double track of the record (or as near as I can manage). Never thot of just doing it with a metronome to develop precise timing. It sounds like a great exercise tho. It's one of those ones you can just turn off your brain and do. You just trust that if you do it often enough it will get better on its own without stressing.
Hey, love your videos man. Has anyone ever commented on the fact that you bare a striking resemblance to a young Norm Macdonald? If you busted out into a spot on Norm Macdonald impression, my head would explode. Thanks!
I only clicked on the video 'cuz I like the dakota red Strat... very practical exercise. I'm going to try that. Thanks Justin! ..."disappearing". cool.
Justin, I greatly appreciate your practice tips they always help me improve or re-affirm I am on the right track. This tip is a great more focused approach to what I have been doing. I have had the "disappearing metronome" happen while practicing. Just as you mentioned my doubt caused me to think the instrument is drowning out the metronome or that I am caught up in my concentration and tuning it out, I loose focus and I stutter my timing. Therefore where I may have been keeping perfectly with the metronome while practicing, my confidence defeats me. To overcome the self-doubt I recorded the practice session and watched the playback. When I find I am on time it helps to build my confidence in my timing and alternatively, it exposes when I am off and thought I was on. (I believe video recording practice may be another tip you put on line) Also, I was wondering if you ever had the opportunity to play a Cuatro Puertorriqueño? It is a beautiful instrument.
Thats how I speed up my scales. For ex. 0001 | Four pick each note (excl the first cycle), and on the "1" you pick the following note. Like FFFG GGGA AAA# A#A#A#C. And all people can hear you playing 0000-1111-2222-3333. But you hear the cycle 0001-1112-2223. Funny. You can make it complex by putting 0101 or 0100 in scale or ascending to the 2nd note 0012.
My guitar won't conquer my metronome as it has an annoying beeping noise which conquers all LOL. There was one time however I thought I got my metronome to disappear but I had accidentally forgot to turn it on.
Its called habituation, Like someone says that clock in your front room ticks quite loudly? You say oh yes, I'm so used to it I don't even notice it anymore?
Well this is a slightly different thing. Stuff like the clock ticking or noticing your own breathing is stuff that can disappear as you pay attention to other things. But in this exercise, you literally can’t hear the metronome because the sound is synced up perfectly with the guitar pluck.
i was watching this video on my phone while shitting! thank god for all the people working in terrible conditions in third world countries! doing a job so bad they want to kill themselves and making our technology affordable! go western society and go borderland slave workers in sweatshops! philosophical as fuck

This teacher is so modest & honest. I learnt somthin important here. "Stick to basics, bcos it's still back to basics at the high level"😁
You're such a great teacher

This is really great. These are the subtleties that make one a better player! Thanks!

At the very start of the beginner's course, and other places, he talks about the importance of foot tapping. Has a video on it too.

Absolutely right, there is no way to get a good player without this.
Thank`s a lot for all your lessons, you are a great Guitar Instructor.

Very useful, thanks. I've been playing in front of the beat for 6 years and I never knew until I tried this lol.
my timing is none existant and ive never thought of trying it as you have shown you are a fantastic teacher Justin keep it up

Norm MacDonalds!!! Looking good! Thanks for all the tips!
7:30 Great point!

Excellent tip. I need to work on this one!! Thanks Justin for your dedication to helping us learn this great instrument.

Ok I switched strings on up beat. Ty
Very good lesson! Important stuff, thanks for it!

Awesome teacher. Wish you were here in Canada so I can learn in person.
I can't give you enough thumbs up for showing me this exercise
As always Justin , great stuff !
Very helpful exercice
thanks Justin
Awesome tip! Would this exercise improve time keeping ability for strumming too? Or more geared towards scales/solos/lead guitar?
Hey, love your videos man. Has anyone ever commented on the fact that you bare a striking resemblance to a young Norm Macdonald? If you busted out into a spot on Norm Macdonald impression, my head would explode. Thanks!

Put the speed at 0.5
Drunk justin
lol
😂
i wanted to learn something and im just laughing here
Excellent teacher. Thanks.
Thank you Justin.
Should you do this lower and lower? I know Matt schofield practices at 30bpm and can make it sound good
Awesome!
Thanks for sharing, Justin!!!
Cheers!
Hey Justin! i 've being doing this metronome thing a while ago. I suppose its because i think more technical. i am glad u mentioned it!
4:20 an amazingly confusing feeling at first without a doubt, i thought the metronome was off
Great tip, thanks! Struggling a bit with timing and will definitely try this! :-)
Excellent.
Bored to perfection....doing the metronome not Justin..there is'nt a sentence to thank him enough for sharing his wisdom and especially his time
Very cool.
thanks for the tips Justin, very useful as always ;)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
So helpful 🙏

Great lesson thanks
One thing that helps me focus is to run my guitar and metronome through a set of headphones
I read "the disappearing metronome", and thought those robbing bastards had been back again.
Sad to say but, I can think of a few drummers that should practice to your video.
Justin from Tassie 🎸👍🏻
Thanks for that!
Brilliant
Any hints on finding the metronome once you hide it? ; ) Nice vids.
Does anyone know a piano teacher as good as justin on youtube? like with exercises and tips ?
Do a demo of the amp in the bacground, i have that exact
Geir olav i
Great! :-)
If I'm playing with my fingers, should I do this exercise with all fingers or just my thumb?
+MusicDAB Is Me You should get a pick.
Yes bro its doesnt matter what genre u playing u have work on timing, its little bit weird practice fingerstyle with metronome but its work bro.
Gooooooorrrrps
Justin, is "playing on the back beat" the same as playing after the metronome?
If i had a start like that my timing would be 10 times better lol
My guitar won't conquer my metronome as it has an annoying beeping noise which conquers all LOL. There was one time however I thought I got my metronome to disappear but I had accidentally forgot to turn it on.
Not quite my tempo
Its called habituation, Like someone says that clock in your front room ticks quite loudly? You say oh yes, I'm so used to it I don't even notice it anymore?

2:08 pretty easy? not tight! = not easy (yet)!
Norm Mcdonald
Dude, are you Billy Zane?
You are so adorable when you shake your head...❤️
Norm Macdonald
Haha i totally see that
when you said close your eyes I laughed cause I always do better when the metronome quits displaying on the phone(I use an android app).
Sorry for sounding so stupid, am I just playing the note in between?
1:59. 2.04 and the rest, man, you are off, it´s far away from tight. take cubase, do recording and check it with timewarp.
Welcome to the Twilight Zone
i love learning guitar and pooping at the same time
wooow, thats philosophical! (-: can you elaborate this a bit more? :-D
i was watching this video on my phone while shitting! thank god for all the people working in terrible conditions in third world countries! doing a job so bad they want to kill themselves and making our technology affordable! go western society and go borderland slave workers in sweatshops! philosophical as fuck
I get a ping pong effect on your voice, it's most noticeable at the very beginning.
Really annoying... Were you using 2 audio recording sources?
dude wth you just getting views
only verbal not showing nything 🤣
