The Sabbath version is so ingrained in my head that it's hard to pick The Dickies, but had I heard both, back to back, in the early 80s it would be pretty close. I'd probably still go with Sabbath though. Good one guys!!!
Thank you for doing this suggestion, it's always appreciated, Chris and Cynthia. I've always loved this cover by 'The Dickies' and I actually prefer it slightly over the original, but it's a very close thing. Of all the covers that The Dickies have done I feel that this is their best.
Sabbath for me easily, because of all members Ozzy, Iommi, Geezer (such good bass as usual) and Ward. I know people criticise Ozzy's vocals but i can attest live he was brilliant. Also, his lyrics are so much more personal and believable than Dio (bearing on mind i am a Dio fan). Sabbath were at their best between 1969-1975 bur still great for the last 2 tours. Coming to the Dickies, i appreciate the speed at the guitar solo but disappointed with the vocals - he tries (but fails) to mimic Ozzy and should have instead have gone full on punk.
First bought a dickies single on yellow vinyl. It was banana splits. They're wild. Good fun but you never go beyond the original paranoid for me Sabbath all day long
Saw The Dickies in 1978 supporting The Jam. They were great fun and they did this, as well as Eve of Destruction. They followed up the album with sped up version of Silent Night backed by The Sound of Silence! They hit the charts with Banana Splits. All is great and should never be taken seriously.
The Dickies speed it up & get my vote 🗳 ! Props To A&M for signing these guys in the 70's. They do a rollicking Nights 🌙 In White Satin on the 2nd album. Brilliant !
THANKS for doing that! OF COURSE the Black Sabbath original is legendary… but THE DICKIES really do take care to honor the original… and the musiciianship is SO TIGHT with this band. They even take care to get the harmonies right in the covers. LOVE ‘em both!! Cheers!
Ha !! Thanks for this comparison ! Its a Classic tune 1 But to use the SAS slogan ! Who Dares Wins ? Great fun version at 350 miles an hour by the Dickies , whats not to like ? Both are are Ace , cheers
Did you know, that the german "Schlager-Duo" Cindy & Bert did a version of "Paranoid" too, called "Der Hund von Baskerville" from 1971. Try that, not so bad as it looks like.
Really didn't think I would like the Dickies version, but I did. Sounded a bit like they just put the original record on the 45 speed on the turntable. So now I have another favourite version.

Listened to the first few seconds of the Dickies and as soon as the vocal came in I had to turn off the utter punk style rubbish. Philistines in my book.

Comparing any original artist with a cover is the ultimate disrespect 😡 you compare cover with another cover ! The cover could not exist without the original artist. The original work be it book , movie , music etc stands apart from later versions as the progenitor !

Amen to that !
Black Sabbath for me
The Dickies first single. The group pic on the sleeve had Leonard hanging upside down in a straitjacket. Great stuff.
There's a school of thought that Ozzy can't carry a tune in a bucket, and I subscribe to that. However, Sabbath win by a mile.
The Dickies speed it up & get my vote 🗳 ! Props To A&M for signing these guys in the 70's. They do a rollicking Nights 🌙 In White Satin on the 2nd album. Brilliant !
Fan Mail by them is my favourite
The Dickies version has the last two verses sung in a different order.
Black Sabbath for me 🏴✌️

👍👍👍👍
seen the Dickies many. slight edge for the Dickies
Not a fan of either singers, but I think the music is better with Sabbath.

Love the Dickies and their version; but hard to top the groove of the original. that chugging chord in between verses is too good.

On The Dickies version the guitar is just playing the vocal line. Flattens the song out terribly.
😳 black Sabbath?🧐🙄
Much as I like The Dickies doing this, I'll stick wi Sabbath on this one. I like Jazz Sabbath's Version as well.

Not much more than a straight copy by The Dickies. A bit pointless. Black Sabbath gets my vote.

Fuckin shit, it's a fuckin cover, they did not write the song, understand? 😡😡😡

Who did it better is silly. About the only time a new version was better was Hendrix and All Along the Watchtower.
