Because we live in a lovely state where private companies running the toll roads can have you stripped of your right to drive if you fail to pay the tolls.
So you’re saying you prefer to pay for roadways with taxes. Other Americans don’t. In fact, some of them preferred to sell public roadways to private corporations so that they can charge even more money for tolls.
Funny toll story: A bunch of years ago I was getting off the exit at Somers Point NJ and came up to an unmaned toll booth with one of those change receiving machines. Now, I'm an honest old guy that hasn't adapted too well to all this modern electronic foolery so I didnt have Easy Pass and I dont carry change as it weighs me down. So those were the only 2 ways I could pay the toll since there was no one there who could accept my paper money. So after my wife spent a little time fumbling for change and learned we didnt have 3 quarters, a short line had developed behind me. So I take a dollar and walk back to the guy behind me asking for change. He didnt have any but said that people drop some coins now and then and I might find some on the ground. Well, there were some quarters there but they were pressed and glued into the tar on the surface so I started to try and dig some out with my keys. It wasnt working, then a realization came over me. What the hell was I doing?? All this aggravation for 75 cents?? I got into the car and drove off thinking that if they wanted their 75 cents bad enough, they'd just have to track me down. With the cameras there, I'm pretty sure the show was worth more than the 75 cents owed! Never heard anything back from them to this day.😊
I had something similar happen to me. Was on a cross country trip and got caught on a toll road. The booth got CC was closed and I didn’t have enough change. I threw in what I had and drove off, but never heard anything about it. Now the first thing I do when I get a new phone or car with GPS is choose "avoid toll roads" option. I’m sure they’re happy that I’m tearing up more of their roads avoiding tolls and I’m happy to do it, so it’s a win/win…
It seems criminal. There is someone taking salary who are responsible for keeping that booth running. They must be in jail for cheating: the toll company, the drivers and the city.
