Jaws: But then again, how often do you get 8 drives on a single assigned drive space? I mean, it is possible but not practical. I think it would rather be the destination drive than the source drive. cp "A:\PackardBell\Canon" "D:\" That's how you get Canon IN D!
The slight klack sound as a reader head reaches the end of it's track while producing a note. The sound the stepper motor makes after a note is finished, but it buzzes for a fraction of a second longer than it's supposed to, that waning sound. And of course, the sound of the reader heads in the tracks themselves. It's like a musician's fingers brushing over guitar strings on their way to the next fret, or the breaths of a person playing a wind instrument. These aren't sounds you're supposed to hear as the listener, but they are produced subtly in the background nonetheless. To me, this adds a layer of reality that is all to often missing from music, and I love that floppy drive music has it. Here you have a digital medium, being translated to analog in a very kinetic way, and it's beautiful.
this makes me weep tears of joy. using seemingly obsolete hardware as an instrument and breathing new spirit into it is a noble skill. This video is an amazing fusion of classical and modern art.
+hereLiesThisTroper I once had to play it on the sax. Now I'm a military specialist in defusing bombs underwater because I can hold my breath for six minutes. Kappa.
Wow. you really have to give it to the composer. When a song can still sound this stunningly beautiful while played by a some very limited hard drives it is a testament to the outstanding quality of the composition.
Gnm Software 2012 | Gnmpolicemata No, he said that because the cello to this is extremely boring and it isn't very fun when ya gotta play it. though it's still a nice piece.
Gnm Software 2012 | Gnmpolicemata Allow me to rephrase. If there are several instruments that are playing together, the cello is very much the same through out the entire piece. not much changing from start to finish and so therefore boring to play.
Oh my. I just had glorious visions of a completely proud nerd couple walking down the aisle to this at their wedding. Man. so fitting. It would be so awesome.
Pachelbel's canon is one of my favorite pieces of music. You've done an excellent job with this rendering. It pleases both my inner musician and my inner geek.
i was browsing the playlist and it's amazing how much you had improve your talent. It's just so smooth and magnificent, watching all those mechanical musicians it's fascinating.
I like how the IKEA table resonates giving your FDD's a distinct sound with plenty of body compared to many other similar videos. Someone should experiment more with giving FDD's proper wooden enclosures for a more refined sound.
One of my favorite quotes ever refers to this song. " A canon is a type of song where the melody keeps repeating, and with each repetition the song grows more and more beautiful and vibrant as the new chords harmonize with each other. Wouldn't it be great if the progression of life was like the progression of this song? Nothing would seem to change, but everything would just get richer, fuller."
Oh. My. GAWD. I strive to love these things. Pac-man, Pong, ENIAC, Mappy, Ancient Pcs, but this, this is glorious. This, can truly show the true beauty, in something that so many people think to be obsolete, taking an old key, and opening the door to haven. This is inspirational, and, is incredible to listen to. Thank you for making this. I shall further explore this channel :)
I'd rather listen to this instead of dubstep. Come to think of it, I kinda liked this "flopstep." I think we need better insults for dubstep than floppy drive/fax machine soundeffect porn.
probably my favourite piece of classical music ever, and so to hear it on the floppy drives is absolutely fantastic. well done as ever, thank you and keep up the good work :)
Thank you 50's 60's and 70's nerds for making some crazy ideas with so many moving parts work so well. Solid state USB drives are amazing, but these things impress me more
I like how there are inadvertent percussion effects at points that create the kind of beat you would expect to go along with this. I wish I had the time/knowledge to do this. It would be useful as a music teacher who has an affinity for computers
Pixelized Dreams When I was in the seventh grade, my friend was teasing me about my last name (Seegrist), by saying other words that start with that sound (i.e. Seagull), and eventually Seabiscuit came up and it stuck. Why is your name 'Pixelized "The8BitPlayer" Dreams'? It's not exactly better than mine...
SeaBiscuit Oh, I thought you're that character from Vinesauce. Anyways, Google+ F'd up and now I can't change my username so I changed my display name to Pixelized The8BitPlayer Dreams. Pixelized Dreams.
I find myself strongly disliking comments of "Now do [x]" without actually mentioning the music, especially since it's this good. Well done. And echoing RolledRick's comment, anything that plays well on harpsichord also plays well on stepper motor. I want to say the modulation and/or produced waveform is similar, but I'm no audio tech. Thanks. I won't make a request, except to say: just do more! :-D
I try to keep up and see every comment on my videos, but some of them just slip by. This was one of them and I regret not seeing it sooner. I don't completely hate those kinds of comments, but you're right, I'd much rather see people commenting about the video before making a request. It wouldn't matter if it was criticism or appraise. Thanks! You know I never knew what a harpsichord was exactly. I'm familiar with the sound though. Interesting instrument when compared to a piano. I guess you're right, pieces that work on a harpsichord probably also work on FDDs. I'll have to look further into it!
It would not sound very good after a certain point- because they are only capable of making so many sounds. 150 floppy drives would not sound as pleasing as 8.
I had to do a project on this song at school where we had to build a midi file from scratch, while it may not seem hard considering it's relative simplicity, it was infuriating because it took so long and was the first time I had ever used the program, and that is why this song will always hold a special place in the darkest recess of my blocked memories.
I've never been a fan of this song, after playing cello for 7 years I actually hate this song, but I still appreciate how well this arrangement is done. Thanks and well done.
This is amazing, Imma sub now. Don't worry, I'll be Bach time and time again, I'm taking note of these videos, they're instant classicals. Hmm, I'd make more music puns, but I'd get in treble. I guess it's back to bassics. Welp I'm done here, I've got no puns cleft.
These puns are music to my ears. I guess you could say I have sharp wits, but my puns always fall flat. At least I'm staying on key. I hope you like these comments, it'll help me get note iced. Okay, these puns could probably be used as instruments of torture, but I should just face the music. Hey at least I keep my indepen dance.
Awesome, now do it with dot matrix printers and reel drives, also you could probably get a violin-esque sound from passing the minimum amperage to the motor, all the servos i've used will make a high pitch wine when power is fed to them but not enough to make them move
I keep coming back to this and the KIVA robots. Just can't get enough! Maybe in 20 or 30 years, I will get tired of it. I know. #1 NERD!!! What will we do for quality music when 5 1/4" drives are all gone...?

I can't get good sound on my setup of floppy drives, what do you use to oscillate them? toggle-toggle-wait or toggle-wait-toggle-wait, hell, I even tried toggle-toggle-switch direction-toggle-toggle-switch direction-wait. Just picture a thousand robots in suits listening to this in an opera theatre... ♥
I just came from a train of videos of Futurama's best moments with Bender. I do wonder how he would have reacted to this :)
I imagine two robots about to tie the knot...or in this case, the electric cord, instead.
Pachelbel's Canon in D:\
get it?
Kick The Baby Yeah. XD
Kick The Baby Took me a second (didn't see the colon at first).
Trust me, you don't want to go down that rabbit hole.
Kick The Baby Clever.
Doge 01 It's OK, really. He'll end up with a bajillion people arguing over what letter they assign their Floppy drives to.
how the hell? lol I used to absolutely hate floppy drives, now I just realize they were in the wrong job.
D:\Canon\Pachelbel
more like
A:\-porns\- Pachelbel\Canon in D
+. Doge 1)thats weird porn 2)there is no A disc in the computer anymore
Josef Ryska yes if you use a floppy.
+. Doge you can change the drive letter to any thing :)
A bit late to the party, but it should be D:\USERS\PACHELB\CANON\ , as it is pachelbel's canon in d, as in he owns it.
More like Packard Bell's Canon in D:\ amirite?
^

under rated comment.
+Michael Proctor Not really since floppys aren't assigned to D:\
Jaws Depending how you have it you can have your floppy drive on D:\ especially if you have multiple drives
You could also say D:/Canon. lol
Jaws: But then again, how often do you get 8 drives on a single assigned drive space? I mean, it is possible but not practical.
I think it would rather be the destination drive than the source drive.
cp "A:\PackardBell\Canon" "D:\"

You're absolutely right.
+Love2Destroy Well said. I couldn't have put it any better myself.
+Love2Destroy This description is almost as beautiful as the song I just listened to. Thank you.
thank you!
Man, this really takes me bach.
+crapparc I can't handel this.
I'm just gonna go pach my bags and leave.
When will you be bach?
Ok, good, I wouldn't be able to handel people being missing for long periods of time.
That pun was really baroquen
the talent of some people is insane

so your saying only the instrument is talented?
love how you hit those high notes at the end is that new?
why did he deleted his twitter account?
sir, I love your work. thank you for sharing it.
*****, well there is one other excuse. A typo. It's only one extra 'd'. Actually two other excuses; he could be a non-native English speaker.
I just noticed there's no Robocop-on-floppies!
Pachelbel's Canon in D:\
Because they're floppy disk drives.
Which are usually assigned to drive D:\
Unless there's already A CD/DVD drive in the PC.
FDDs are A:\ and B:\
And optical drives are often E:\ now, because people have multiple harddrives.
TRY AGAIN!
Tommy59375 Dangit. If only it was Canon played on 8 CD drives.

GOD DAMN IT BOBBY!!!
Pachelbel once dated a Celloist and got dumped.
And then he made Canon in D

Ass, don't copy other's jokes.
If you're going to do more classical music, Vivaldi's Four Seasons is a must. If the floppies don't explode when you get to Winter, that is.
I'm not the builder of this, but I think there might be maximum pitch issues. At least there might be volume issues at higher pitches.
Wow. you really have to give it to the composer. When a song can still sound this stunningly beautiful while played by a some very limited hard drives it is a testament to the outstanding quality of the composition.

You obviously don't play Cello
You're right. I play the floppy drive.
Gnm Software 2012 | Gnmpolicemata
No, he said that because the cello to this is extremely boring and it isn't very fun when ya gotta play it. though it's still a nice piece.
Jacob Herring Doesn't make sense.

The cello plays the same 8 notes for 5 minutes in a row, basically.

I would simultaneously smile so wide and cringe so much. I love it.
One sad floppy can now commiserate with all those sad cello players ;)
Damn. I haven't legitimately laughed at something on the internet for a while. Bravo.

Pachelbel's canon is one of my favorite pieces of music. You've done an excellent job with this rendering. It pleases both my inner musician and my inner geek.
1:13
Wow, it even played the grace notes.
That's what I play on the bagpipes.
1:12 it even has the trills this is amazing
Trills, eh?
This is so.... wrong. So delightfully wonderfully wrong. I love it.
It's OK. I'll be your guilty pleasure. Just don't tell anyone...
+MrSolidSnake745 don't worry, only the people in the comments who sees the comments will know so yea

with a full floppy orchestra xD

The floppy disk user what an old machine marvel can play music if you set all them up correctly
This is basically what dubstep is.
this... this is Flopstep.
I'd rather listen to this instead of dubstep.

I think we need better insults for dubstep than floppy drive/fax machine soundeffect porn.

One of the best renditions of this song I've ever heard. I don't know how the heck you do this, but it's BRILLIANT!!!
Now just attach guns to them and you've got the Turrets from Portal and Portal 2. But seriously, this is sick as all hell.
I hate those turrets

This is absolutely MAGNIFICENT ! I am rather ignorant with a computer but I am still able to see when something with a computer is perfect !
The bass floppy drive manages to sound just like a contrabass clarinet tho
One of my favorite songs :') I'm very glad you chose this.
this is what got me into classical music
Одна из самых любимых классических мелодий!
Sounds like something the turrets would sing in Portal, or like part of the soundtrack.
I find myself strongly disliking comments of "Now do [x]" without actually mentioning the music, especially since it's this good.

This is by far my favorite classical piece and I'm so friggin happy I found this.... Thank you from the very bottom of my soul. x'3
Do you do weddings?
Beautiful. Absolutely beautiful.
Wow. A bank of floppy drives brought a tear to my eye. Well done.
Has anyone ever tried to make an orchestra of these? like 150 floppy drives...
I want to now that I think about it.
It would not sound very good after a certain point- because they are only capable of making so many sounds. 150 floppy drives would not sound as pleasing as 8.
Why not a million?
an orchestra is formed by many different instruments for a reason xD
Why not just a whole bunch of stuff? Not just Floppy Drives, but like printers, and lasers, and tesla coils, things like that. :3
ITS SO BEAUTIFUL!!!
Different camera angles. Made it a lot better. ^_^
theres something oddly satisfying about seeing computers perform music to perfection in their own strange fashion.
I´m not gonna ask how you did this, I´m just glad you did.
This is awesome. I was just about to listen to this song anyways and then this popped up in my sub box and I almost jizzed.
I had to do a project on this song at school where we had to build a midi file from scratch, while it may not seem hard considering it's relative simplicity, it was infuriating because it took so long and was the first time I had ever used the program, and that is why this song will always hold a special place in the darkest recess of my blocked memories.
This is incredibly beautiful
Canon in D:\minor
Classical music on classical hardware...what a classic!
Very cool, funny it sounds 8-Bit!
WHY ARE YOUR VIDEOS SO DAMN ADDICTING!!!
This takes a unique brain to concept and deliver. Well done !!!
Very beautiful in its own way great job
I've never been a fan of this song, after playing cello for 7 years I actually hate this song, but I still appreciate how well this arrangement is done. Thanks and well done.
Really loving the classical music. Keep doing this here. I'm already subscribed, But when I saw and heard this wished I could do it twice over. :)
Awesome, a true geeks favorite classical music remake. FLOPPY DRIVES FTW!!!!!!!
This gets way too funny if you imagine the noises are farts.
I'm really immature.
+The Scout Here Hey, Don't worry about it, the internet is immature anyway.
+The Scout Here Now I can't unhear it. Thanks bro hahahaha.
+The Scout Here yo if a group of people can fart to the rhythm..whoa
YOU ARE THE SCOUT HERE!!
+The Scout Here Thanks a lot... ^^ Now i´m lovin it :D
This is BEAUTIFUL.
Awesome job, I love this!
Hey, at least I have beat the competition, I guess these puns are my forte, but don't lose your tempo.
These are just minor puns, but I did major in jokes :)
One of my favorite classical pieces - well done! I love it :D
Great work.
That was excellently done. Do you think you could attempt the narnia theme?
Best work in a while, man. Great video.
Awesome, now do it with dot matrix printers and reel drives, also you could probably get a violin-esque sound from passing the minimum amperage to the motor, all the servos i've used will make a high pitch wine when power is fed to them but not enough to make them move
I know floppy drives are obsolete but this is an awesome to revive a classic technology with classical music.
You've got to be kidding me xD This is incredible, such a crazy unique idea
Nice! One of my favorites too!
this equipment is a must for a music lover
Awesome work man
I keep coming back to this and the KIVA robots. Just can't get enough! Maybe in 20 or 30 years, I will get tired of it. I know. #1 NERD!!! What will we do for quality music when 5 1/4" drives are all gone...?

Great stuff!
I'd love to hear some Vivaldi; preferably one of his pieces for the harpsichord as I think this sound would work really well with them
Have you thought about using a dedicated mic for each HDD then mixing the whole together? It would sound alot better, because, if you take this song for example, the lower notes are too loud and sometimes you cant follow the main tune.
Now do Paranoid
How incredibly creative!
This sounds like it would make for a good Christmas time song.
I really hope some day to hear this with the motors on the bassline.
I can't get good sound on my setup of floppy drives, what do you use to oscillate them? toggle-toggle-wait or toggle-wait-toggle-wait, hell, I even tried toggle-toggle-switch direction-toggle-toggle-switch direction-wait. Also what do you use for a timer system? Repeat at x microseconds and check what drives need to be stepped?
Tian Cilliers Lmao you got ignored
This is absolutely brilliant. Who said floppy disks were no longer useful?
What will we do for good music when floppy drives are gone??? Will be a sad day...
THE GODLY VIBRATO , one could only hardly imagine that simple technology like this can have such a strong artistic feeling for music, very nice and touching performance , my favorites are b:/ and f:/
Am I the only one who thinks the the portal 2 soundtrack should be played with floppy drives?...
That's wonderful!
