  • Holidays the Disney way. The entertainment mega-house usually finds a way to serve up some big-screen family fun during Thanksgiving week, and 2022 is no different. But what may surprise moviegoers is the holiday box office numbers coming in for "Strange World," Disney Studios' latest animated offering.

I think thats something disney is growing out of, if anything.
Does Ariel, Jasmine, Belle, Jane, Tiana, Rapunzel, Anna or Elsa look different from one another? No - they are essentially the same drawing with some teensy little tweaks to hair colour or eye shape. I coupd see Ariel fitting right into Beauty and the Beasts world, or Tiana into Rapunzel's - or heck, the boy from Treasure Planet into Aladdin!
Could any of the strange world characters fit into Raya? Not really.
What about any characters from Encanto fitting in here? No way, this one is way more loose and squishy.
If you take Pixar into account (which I wouldnt because I consider them a quite different studio, but some would) - no character from Turning Red, Soul or Lightyear could intermingle with a disney cast.
The difference I think you are seeing is a growing freedom for 3d character animation to go off-model in the same way 2d animation does.
Programs are better at extreme movement, people are being paid to make far more alternate models of characters to allow better expression - and a cultural shift for animation has allowed them to be slightly less "male everything look stiff and perfect like the toys".
A very Sony Animation, loose, soft, squishy, clasically cartoony move.

Disney no longer knows how to promote anything without an established fanbase. They've lost that skill. @The mouth of Sauron Good movies generate hype on their own. It's a snow ball effect. A saw alot of ads on UA-cam for this movie. Tbh I thought it looked cool but I'm not big on movies.
After a trailer is released people talk and it spreads. People make plans to go see it. This is the snowball effect. It's sad that some can't accept that fact that alot of people disagree with their views. Movies which keep it tame do well because it's something we can all for the most part agree on.
I miss movies like Mulan, lion King etc. Those were solid movies even frozen. But people have spoken with their wallet.
Now Disney has moved to streaming where failures can be blunted. Like the release of Mulan or mrs marvel. The business that started it all is burning through money. It crazy to me that they can't accept reality. It's like most rotten tomatoes scores, critics rate all of these movies favorably however the audience score isn't the same at all. They are willing to purge user reviews to maintain the false narrative. Failure is good though, because you can learn from it

Point is you can get people to talk about sexuality and other things without even trying to, so when they try so damned hard combined with the movie being average or far below average, it's really dumb to spend so much time promoting that one aspect of the film.

I need to say this: I think so much of the problem begins with the title: _Strange World._ That’s about a generic of a title as you can get! It’s so generic, the movie poster might as well be a white plain with “Strange World” in big block letters printed on it, and nothing else. (I’m probably aging myself here; I remember generic grocery products sold a fair time ago!)
There’s also the show, _Strange New Worlds,_ that exists, and maybe there’s some confusion. I can defend that title because any _Star Trek_ fan knows the words “strange new worlds” figured prominently in the intros of two long-running shows.
But, I think _Strange Worlds_ is simply a terrible title! It would need a seriously strong story to offset that title, and I’ll leave others to decide that…

If a story has straight characters, that doesn’t mean its about being straight and does not alienate the LGBTQ community. We still watch movies with straight characters because of the story, characters, etc.,
But if it has a gay character who for one minute shows they are attracted to the same sex, now suddenly the entire movie is about being gay? Ignoring that the rest of the story, plot, etc., doesn’t even talk about it because the story is actually about something else.
Stop generalizing movies because of the sexuality of their characters. Most of this movies are about entirely different things, but the only thing that catches your attention is that a boy likes another boy. Something that in no regards can change someone’s sexuality, since a boy liking a girl hasn’t changed mine DESPITE the countless media i’ve watched.

However, I've gone to the movie theatre a lot this year and there's only once I actually saw previews for this movie and that was in September. They didn't really advertise it. Didn't do too good in theatres either I don't think. I was the only one in the theatre when I went to see it. Sucks that it didn't do good though as it's really good. It's weird but it's good.

Nobody talking about it being a gay teen romance for kids? That's why my family isn't going to see it. I thought all the thumbnails claiming it to be one were just click bait, but after seeing actual clips of Ethan and Diazo flirting and Ethans dad throwing Ethan at Diazo was enough for me. Not surprised it flopped at all. Saw plenty of ads on my streaming services for it.

I didn't like the artstyle of the teaser at all. The whacky character movements remind me of Sony animated movies and the humor reminded me of Dreamworks. And for some reason I don't want that in a Disney movie. If I want whacky animation, I watch Sony animated movies which excel at it, if I want weird humor I watch dreamworks. I watch Disney for "warm and fuzzy" and for "magical adventure". I don't know, maybe I just didn't like the trailer and am trying to find any reason as to why.

How is that "pushing so hard"? Unless, of course, ANY positive portrail equals to "pushing hard all the time" to you, but that would just be hateful and bigoted and directly contradict your own statement about being all for educating your child about the subject, and that's not the case, right? Watched it yesterday, it was just ok. From the trailers, I was expecting an alien planet, so was surprised when it wasn't that. The messaging is blunt, the criticism of generations is sure to trigger some people, the characters are interesting but they drown out the exploration element. The female leader randomly being the bad guy for scenes then flipping back to good again was jarring.
I think the biggest issue for me was I was excited to see a new alien world and to learn about it, and what I got was journey to the centre of the earth squished in around a family drama. Like Raya and the last dragon, it would have been better as a series where there would be enough room to explore the land and develop the characters. Woke stuff doesn't bother me unless it throws me out of the story for being too forced, only once was that the case here for me, but everyone's mileage varies on that one!
Oh and the I think the art style didn't work for the story they were telling. And I would have liked a surprise angle on the 'grandson has to be like his dad or grandad' conflict - why couldn't he have found an affinity for piloting like his mother and still done his own thing with it? That would have shut the dad and grandad up and acknowledged the mother's role as an option a bit more while allowing him to be his own person.

Funny how you don't mention the elephant in the room which is Disney advertising it as a gay character heavy movie. All the articles were how about the kid was gay and it would focus on that. No one wants to take their kids to that. Everything was the first gay character but they have done this a million times in hopes it will help sell their movie when it has never happened. People want the story not politics and they advertised this as politics.
