It works in tennis. They've eliminated linespeople. There's still a chair umpire, but they don't make line calls or overrules anymore. Now you eliminate bad calls and all the associated drama. The only counterargument it seems these days is that umpires getting it wrong is "part of the game" and for some odd reason, being wrong is a good thing. We have the technology, let's use it. That's progress.

two BIG differences between what tennis needs and what baseball needs.
1 - in tennis you only care about 1 dimension (the line) and only when the ball hits the ground. in baseball you care about 3 dimensions (height of the batter and the length and width of the plate) and you care if the ball touches any part of that box - the front corner, the back corner, the top edge, etc.
2 - in tennis the lines are always the same, the don't change. In baseball, each hitter is different, their height is different, and their stances are different. The computer needs to be able to adjust the size of the box to match the individual hitter and the stance he is using in real time.

Before going to tech-based strike zones though thus removing the need for human umpires at the home plate, tell broadcasters to remove their strike zones from our TV screens first, because those rectangles are just as misleading as some of these umpires are. They have to judge the pitches going through a three dimensional plane from just one point of view. I'm sure they'd be very happy to have like an augmented reality device that shows them the X, Y, and Z axes of the home plate to help them but there's none of that yet. Give them a little break.

MLB is now testing it in the minors (I believe in AAA right now) coz Manfred supposedly wants it in MLB for 2024 but it's seriously not accurate in the way fans think it'll be.
You have to understand that Manfred isn't trying to make the game better with this tech, he's just a puppet for the owners. Robo umps is an easy way to push fan hate towards human umps (who statistically are actually calling better than ever before) and deflect away from the bigger issues in MLB (owners, esp recent issues like the lawsuit recently settled coz they pay minor leaguers below poverty level wages).
This is baseball politics and unfortunately it sucks. The only hope I have is it's more of a Hawkeye challenge system like tennis (note: even Hawkeye gets things wrong, though its margin of error in tennis is usually 2-4mm instead of an inch+) than fully replacing calls.

That's right. After the robotics come in umps will go, managers will be next, then robots will replace the players.

Jomboy is kinda arrogant. "Tricked yourself into thinking it's good"
Because you don't see things the way others do, doesn't mean you are correct. Robots have been horrible in the Atlantic league.

I watched an Independent game w auto strike zone. Now I don’t care about the “Independent” team, but the game was terrible. Attending the game is social. A missed call you call out. “Missed it blue”.. Not with auto strike zone. Super boring. The game become really boring.

Baseball is not broken. We do not need changes. We could easily keep up with stats of umpires and if they get too bad we move them out. But the game is perfect the way it is. We do not need a bunch of people with attention spans of squirrels making changes to one of the greatest sports in the world. We also need to get rid of the umpires who can't get it done.

@@phishfearme2 No, I get they have a union. Just mean the best way IMO to handle it if I could just make things happen. I don't want a bunch of people who hate baseball the way it is, come try and change it.

Sterilizing the game by using too much technology is frankly disappointing. The game is imperfect. Why do we want a video game experience. Boring, sterile, zzzzzz.

Stupid unritten rules intended to protect pitchers' egos are "part of the game". Paying an arm and a leg to buy a ticket is "part of the game". Having to subscribe to a fucking cable network for 100 bucks a month to watch my team play because of money grubbing blackout restrictions is "part of the game". Watching umpire act like a bunch of immature, controlling assholes and ejecting players is "part of the game".
Do you see where I'm going here? All this corrupt bullshit combined is killing the game. I'm sick of it. People who support keeping human umpires need to come up with a better argument than appealing to tradition.
